Wrong tactics, Right result
Which fighter do you know fought completely the wrong tactics in a fight but still came out victorious. Kassim Ouma is my example when he was champion and fought the hard punching African fighter Kofi Jantuah. Ouma stood in front of Kofi and traded a lot of punches. I think Ouma was even dropped and certainly wobbled on a number of occasions but eventually taking the fight to the bigger puncher starting to turn the fight around. The Ghanaian started to tire and Ouma at that stage could throw punches for fun and did not tire. Ouma punch resistance was good too and he slipped many of the punches. Slowly Ouma started to dominate not by movement and boxing but standing in front slipping punches. Crazy tactics which should have seen him been blown away but eventually saw him victorious.
Re: Wrong tactics, Right result
Iran Barkley against Tommy Hearns.
How about Tommy Hearns choosing to outbox rather than outbang Wilfredo Benitez? Who the hell could have seen that coming?
Max Schmeling standing in the pocket and counterpunching Joe Louis?
Muhammad Ali's rope a dope against George Foreman?
I think the question itself is a hard one though. 99% of all fighters, even really good ones, can only fight one way and be successful. They can emphasize a certain punch etc on a given night but they can't really utilize a different approach than the one that got them there.
Re: Wrong tactics, Right result
I do not think Barclay really had a choice against Hearn’s who was beating him with skill, speed and punching power. Barclay got lucky. I was thinking of fighters that chose to do the wrong thing but still won. Ali v Foreman would be a good example but SRL v Hearns is not as Leonard was getting out boxed which was his strategy at first at long range but had to dig deep and fight Tommy as he was falling behind on points. The key point is that they chose that particular tactic, whilst not expected and won. Watson v Benn by standing there and taking the blows although most were on the arms or even Eubanks carrying his hands too low against Benn and still winning because he had an unbelievable chin.

I dunno. The second result kinda makes me think the Blade just had his number.
Re: Wrong tactics, Right result
Roberto Duran?Esteban De Jesus 2- Dejesus dropped Duran in the first round for the second time in two fights Duran changed tactics and out boxed the boxer. I believe there was a KO and once again in fight number three.
Re: Wrong tactics, Right result
I think Sugar Ray Leonard could have boxed Duran in the first fight and won, although it was part of what made Duran great in that he could lull his opponent into a brawl, so hard to call. Tough to think of many for me. A lot easier to think of guys who ended up losing fights that could have easily won with a different strategy. I guess it just tends to indicate the better fighter almost always wins on the night in boxing.
Re: Wrong tactics, Right result
I dunno. I mean if it results in a win it has to be right. Some guys find a different gear they seldom use or had not honed where some just stick with a style and work off strengths. On Barkley I think he falls into that. Hearns showed he could be shook vs Roldon and Kinchen recent and Barkley though simple could always soak up leather, he just found the Jack n' the box on Hearns.
What about a Morrison. Lived on left hook and power, had been gassed and bounced like a jump ball prior but really boxed and kept head vs Foreman. Virgil hill blitzing Tiozzo for early ko.
Humberto Gonzalez going from seek and destroy on Carbajal ( minus the left hook that put a crease in his grey matter) to turning boxer next two.

Morales out boxed Manny in the first fight, it was only in round 12 that he started fighting silly, think he turned southpaw and nearly got stopped. The other 11 rounds he soundly out boxed Manny.
Castillo v Corrales is a good one, Diego never like using his height and reach and preferred to brawl which was costing him in this fight until he turned it all around in dramatic fashion.
