Boxing may soon gain a new weight class according to Mikhail Denisov, the vice-president of the World Boxing Council, who spoke with RT on the issue.
There's no improvement without change, and professional boxing is no different. It might be a new weight class, at this point, that helps the sport grow.
“There are some fighters who are somewhere in between the cruiserweight and heavyweight classes. So the WBC, WBO and IBF are negotiating over establishing a new weight category, and it could help that kind of fighter bring out their full potential,” said Mikhail Denisov.
The WBC vice-president also explained why the WBC title is regarded the most prestigious in boxing.
“The WBC has brought together around 170 national federations. Its president, Jose Suleiman, really revolutionized professional boxing – 12 rounds instead of 15, pensions for retired fighters, medical insurance, and so on. All the innovations, which were adopted in the sport, are associated with the name of Suleiman, and so is our organization,” said Denisov.
Russia has only had three WBC champions so far. With plenty of talent in the country, the successors to Yury Arbachakov, Kostya Tszyu and Oleg Maskaev are yet to come, and according to Denisov the problem is about experience, as it takes both an excellent fighter and excellent promotion to lead him to the top.
“Professional boxing is a big game. And all the players have already established their names in the business and been there for a long time. Russian boxing needs to develop to really make it, to reach the high-stakes game,” Denisov says.
“We have a great deal of gifted up-and-comers, but we need to learn how to promote them on home soil. First, build up their names and careers here in Russia, which takes a big team of professionals, infrastructure and excellent management. And then, boost them abroad,” he adds.
Despite different mixed martial arts fighting for the right to exist in the combat sports business, and gaining popularity both in Europe and overseas, Denisov is sure that people's passion for boxing will never end.
“Boxing has always had a huge audience and fan base, and it always will. It's a classy sport and a great spectacle watchable by kids, women and, of course, men,” he says.
“I don't think it's under threat of getting less popular or even extinction. It will never happen,” he assures.
New weight category to be introduced in boxing soon — RT
Re: Just we need in the Hev area, another division.
In honesty I really do hate jr's and super's of each division. Reason being is that generally most of the champs of those jr/super divisions have or will move to a division without a prefix. Ward will move to Light heavy, JMM was a lightweight extraordinaire. Cotto really still belongs in Welter. I dare say I totally agree with Teddy Atlas in that because they made easier to fight in a division you don't have the will or the drive anymore to strive for it.
That being said I understand why heavyweight shouldn't be unlimited, however I doubt any heavyweight has been effective weighting over 250 pounds. If there must be a cut off weight for a super heavy I suppose 230 is pretty reasonable.
Re: Just we need in the Hev area, another division.
Guys this is just another tax grab errr sanctioning fee grab and they are doing it right when cruiser is showing some promise. I don't understand why they bothered to move cruiser from 190 to 200 in 2001 let alone this move over a decade later. In addition there is simply not enough superheavyweights around and most of them fight like Carnera. I think its overkill and will do the reverse of what its supposed to do.
Time will tell.
Re: Just we need in the Hev area, another division.
How long before we have:
105-lb champion
106-lb champion
107-lb champion
108-lb champion
etc
etc
etc
(You get the point).
Re: Just we need in the Hev area, another division.
A great idea for the the syndicate that is the wbc is to stop stripping the holders they already have in the first place. That brand is passed around as often as a packed Bong in Chavez jrs kitchen after midnight. Literally what...24, 25 "belts" already? They have a "Mundo hispano" ??? champion for fooks sake.
Not sure what article says exactly nor what Russia has to do with another division but if they are suggesting a trumped up cruiserweight class, the wbu already crowned a "champion" yrs ago in Bobby Czyz, cough, and they no longer exist. Pointless really.
Re: Just we need in the Hev area, another division.
Maybe a double-sided adjustment is needed. Less weight divisions at the lower end, and the creation of a super-HW division. The first one would discourage the "catch-weight" nonsense, which is all the rage in boxing right now. The second one would prevent 300-pound behemoths from fighting 210-pound heavyweights.

I think its more than fair really in that there is not the nonsense of guys melting down to 'unnatural' division requirements. Heavys are as close to natural, comfortable as they come and skill set trumps mass in most cases. Smaller guys have alot of success and others trying to leap divisions for heavyweight glory quickly realized it wasn't meant to be. Last thing we need is another Valuev having his very own division and thinking he's that good ;D

Why not? If it makes boxing and boxers more competitive, who could be against it?
Sarcasm?
It makes it less competitive, the best fighter avoid each other bc they are in their own mini-division.
Re: Just we need in the Hev area, another division.
Weren't they going to start a super heavyweight division a year or two back? All this will do apart from give them more belts to get sanctioning fees off is devalue the heavyweight division even more, if that's possible.

I think it goes a long way in bridging the gap with the lower divisions. Over the past 20 years there could have been some fantastic fights between one time 168-175ers and reduced 210ers.
Ward vs Chambers for example.
Hopkins v Etienne??
Eubank vs Hyde even....
It just gives the lovwerweight boxer more incentive to move from say 175er to fight a 190er knowing that guy has mixed in frequent company of 220ers and so on and so forth.....
That just doesn't happen any more.
