In honesty I really do hate jr's and super's of each division. Reason being is that generally most of the champs of those jr/super divisions have or will move to a division without a prefix. Ward will move to Light heavy, JMM was a lightweight extraordinaire. Cotto really still belongs in Welter. I dare say I totally agree with Teddy Atlas in that because they made easier to fight in a division you don't have the will or the drive anymore to strive for it.
That being said I understand why heavyweight shouldn't be unlimited, however I doubt any heavyweight has been effective weighting over 250 pounds. If there must be a cut off weight for a super heavy I suppose 230 is pretty reasonable.
Guys this is just another tax grab errr sanctioning fee grab and they are doing it right when cruiser is showing some promise. I don't understand why they bothered to move cruiser from 190 to 200 in 2001 let alone this move over a decade later. In addition there is simply not enough superheavyweights around and most of them fight like Carnera. I think its overkill and will do the reverse of what its supposed to do.
Time will tell.
How long before we have:
105-lb champion
106-lb champion
107-lb champion
108-lb champion
etc
etc
etc
(You get the point).
A great idea for the the syndicate that is the wbc is to stop stripping the holders they already have in the first place. That brand is passed around as often as a packed Bong in Chavez jrs kitchen after midnight. Literally what...24, 25 "belts" already? They have a "Mundo hispano"champion for fooks sake.
Not sure what article says exactly nor what Russia has to do with another division but if they are suggesting a trumped up cruiserweight class, the wbu already crowned a "champion" yrs ago in Bobby Czyz, cough, and they no longer exist. Pointless really.
Weren't they going to start a super heavyweight division a year or two back? All this will do apart from give them more belts to get sanctioning fees off is devalue the heavyweight division even more, if that's possible.
I think it goes a long way in bridging the gap with the lower divisions. Over the past 20 years there could have been some fantastic fights between one time 168-175ers and reduced 210ers.
Ward vs Chambers for example.
Hopkins v Etienne??
Eubank vs Hyde even....
It just gives the lovwerweight boxer more incentive to move from say 175er to fight a 190er knowing that guy has mixed in frequent company of 220ers and so on and so forth.....
That just doesn't happen any more.
