new guy
alright, im a brand new guy, but i think i can give you more information than the rest of the guys who are new on this. i want to start, and i have a friend that boxes. theres a gym about a 2 mile drive from my house, and since he goes to a school in another state(long story) hes going to take me there in march so i can see what its like. i run cross country in the fall, swim in the winter for the school, and run track in the spring. aerobically, im pretty darn fit. i have a heavy bag in my basement that i use a lot. i work out in my free time in addition to swimming 2x a day right now until the end of february. im a high school junior, 6 feet tall, 145 lbs and lanky as hell. i have a bench press in my basement as well with some dumbbells and a curling bar, just simple stuff. what i want to know is what i can do with what i have that will best help me prepare to start training at a gym in march. any suggestions?

Re: new guy
at the moment you seem to have what it takes. aerobic fitness and determination is the key for a begginer.
try to download boxing videos (http://www.worldboxingvideoarchive.c...ents/links.php)
look at the way the pros fight, how they throw their punches and how they defend
practice what they do on the heavybag, and in shadow boxing to get a base
basically keep it up my friend!
by the way, why do you need to wait till your friend gets back till you can go to the gym? you should go along yourself, youll get an extra 3 months training in!

Re: new guy
i suppose this is true, i could go by myself. the trainer charges i believe 50 bucks for a session, which is a little steep for me. buddy told me that hes really flexible and will charge a session for the cost of a class, which is about 35 i think. does that sound reasonable at all?

Re: new guy
50 bucks a session??? I pay 18 euros a month, I can train 5 times a week :)

Re: new guy
I pay 40 pounds a month and I can train in my gym 24/7.
Are you getting 1 to 1s with him? Thats alot to learn to box, I don't care if he is a personal trainer or not... ::)

Re: new guy
the time is 1 on 1. im not sure what kind of conversions those are to the dollar though. i should probably just find out what a membership or something is?

Re: new guy
i pay nothing and train all the time. just fnd a dedicated amatuer boxing gym, and join in classes rather than 1 on 1
when they see you have potential to fight for them theyl train you 1 on 1 for nothing ;D

Re: new guy
Speaking of which Alex hows the career going? Whats your record now? :) Just won my first, record is 1-1 now :D Hopefully I can rematch the lad who got the decision over me last time, either me or brother is going to fight him.
More likely my brother, the lad hit me best shots which barely phased me tbh, I just didn't lead off on him properly, game plan was all wrong for his sort of fighter (he fought off his back foot) and I never clicked he was southpaw... :D only really 'lost' that won because he'd had about 5 more than my zero. pretty different stepping through those ropes to compete, didn't get really nervous I just seemed wasn't thinking right, must of been the hype or the adrenalin.
Was really controled this time, felt the bloke out and stuck to my gameplan (he fought like what my trainer had guessed any way, was about half a foot shorter than me, strong as an oxe and he just came on with loads of big shots...), defended, covered up and countered in the first round, used my jab (stupid thing needs work tbh :D) to try and keep the range where I could and make him punch himself out. Really broke away in the third round, he was so tired I think I must have scored over 10 shots in the last 30 seconds :D
Looking forward to the next one, as long as I can keep as calm and calculated It'll be another win :D

Re: new guy
I'd rather not but I guess I will: all the swimming and what not in the world has fuck all to do with boxing. Im not trying to bwe harsh but boxing is boxing and the conditioning is separate from allelse.

Re: new guy
you can't deny it helps though, you can have all the defenses and combinations in the world, but if your two fucked to use them then they're no good, it is related to boxing, but its more of doubled edged sword.
I won my last bout using my technique, basicly I just couldn't be hit and the lad got tired, saying that if I hadn't had the energy reserves he probably wouldn't have won, I used my technique to tire him in the first and the first half of the second and my fitness to expand my lead in points in the third.
Skills and fitness are two tools you have to be able to use and use well, they are different, I won't argue with out, but unless you're like a Jedi master at boxing or something they're pretty useless with out each other.
Skill should come first though, like any sport its only defined by its techniques and not the fitness of the blokes in it, lance armstrong might be 100s of times fitter than me, but stick him in a ring with me and ask us to both do our thing and I suspect I may come out on top :P
