GGG is too strong for the MW Division!
Well, I think this is becoming patently obvious now. He can make weight. He has the size, but he will never be able to find competition that can match BOTH his skill level and strength. He has to move up to Super Middle.
I see him having at least three more fights at MW. At best. Hopefully it will be Quillin, Lee or Cotto/Alvarez. Anyone else, while it may be appealing, would be a waste of everyone's time.
GGG has to move on. The Super Middle's may be a better place to see a better fight.
As for Lemeiux, he did nothing wrong other than be forced into fighting on the outside. He could not get in for fear he would be hit. Those early jabs put the fear of pain in him....
He is a good fighter. One of the top 5 in the division. Worthy opposition, for what it's worth. But, GGG was just too strong, and in Lemieux's case, too big.
Re: GGG is too strong for the MW Division!
It isn't GGG's fault that MW is so weak, but it reminds me a bit of Calzaghe at SMW or Hopkins at MW. Hopkins eventually just got too weak and old to go 12 at MW and Calzaghe had to move up to find some names. GGG is in a similar boat. Either he stays and dominates at MW for the next 5 years or else he finds a smaller man to fill up and meet him or he moves up himself. I can understand the desire for him to go up and beat Ward, but if GGG is really comfortable at MW, then why not just reign supreme there? It's a bit frustrating as a fan to have him fight relatively easy fights like this one, but it seems to be the best MW has at the moment. It happens in boxing. Divisions have their lulls and then 4 or 5 new guys start to make something happen. They duke it out and the lull starts again. A division is cyclical somewhat akin to the earths orbit around the star at the center of this particular solar system within the confines of a galaxy hurtling deep into the computer screen of a nerd who isn't even paying any attention. MW will bounce back and GGG will either be at SMW or a little bit older and more beatable.
Re: GGG is too strong for the MW Division!
if he went up to SMW who would stand in his way?
the ward fight will never happen
Re: GGG is too strong for the MW Division!
The only middleweight that I think would have given him trouble would be Dmitry Pirog, but he has since retired due to a bad back which is a big shame.

GGG says he is not a businessman but he definitely wants the money and is every businessman's stairway to heaven. I think he will start testing the waters in the next year or two, as it was obvious PPV is his dream come true. ;) Why not do a catch weight to see how it goes, especially if it's on another PPV card?
He is in the position every fighter prays for, everything he does makes big money!
Re: GGG is too strong for the MW Division!
I think GGG's resume at middleweight could still use another big name, the winner of Cotto-Canelo will do, and then test 168 or vs the winner of Jacobs-Quillen, and then maybe Andre Ward at 168?
GGG has plenty of options...he could stay at 160 and rule for a good long while until someone younger and bigger comes along.

dont get me wrong id love to see it, i think GGG would have it tomorrow, i dont think ward would
i would be highly surprised if ward agrees to the fight
Re: GGG is too strong for the MW Division!
As soon as he cleans up the weight and beats Cotto/Canelo or they give up the title the sooner he will go up in weight but at the moment he is still cleaning up.
