I percieve a big future problem with rep
Just thought I'd air this as I think it will be a big problem a few months from now.
The current rep system is flawed in that people's rep increases way too quickly.
Since this new board opened my own own rep score ocnverted from coolclicks has doubled. I imagine people who had less coolclicks to begin with will have seen their rating quadroupled or even more in that time scale.
Already I'm handing out 60 points per rep, Mick I believe is in the 70's.
The amount of points I have increases every single day as does I imagine a lot of others.
This rapid inflation will cause a huge problem a few months from now. By the end of March Mick will already doubtless be packing a punch of 100 oer hit, I'll probably be at 90 with Gamo, Boxing Gorilla and Saddo all around the same.
By the end of the summer I'd imagine at this growth Mick will be packing a punch of around 500 and I'd guess over a 1000 by the end of the year!
Everybody else's reps will also grow exponentially so that by early 2009 everybody will be at least a Saddo Hall of Famer just by registering and getting a couple of welcomes.
Are we just going to get used to people having rep scores in the hundreds of thousands with Saddo needing to constantly update the rankings to take account of this inflation or are we going to change the system?
Just my thoughts, call it concern but I'm interested to hear what others think?

I've noticed it too, but it makes losers such as myself feel kinda good.
But just think, if you ever did get a punch power of 1,000, imagine the amount of damage you could deal to give bad rep to someone like Terry Buttkins or some other shit stirrer. I think so it's possible to have negative rep points (thought I saw someone one time with a rep score of -15).

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
By the way you spend waaaaaay to much time on this Rep. thing....
Just dish it out and that's that... No need to have a log in.
I don't keep track I just dish it out to those who deserve it and those who Rape ooops! Rep. me....

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
hehe I know what your saying Mick but I just think this new rep system means people earn a rep way too quickly.
I'm sure you'll remember before we had the new board Wacko had over 3000 coolclicks, he was over 1000 more ahead of anybody else.
It took him 4 years of being a 100% devoted member to this site and countless rbr's to earn that number.
Under our old coolclick system he could have had a year off and come back and STILL had more coolclicks than anybody else. A coolclick score was harder to earn and thus reflected more fairly on the status of someone like Wacko.
Now if you sort members by reputation in just a single month he's already been dumped to 4th place
By the end of April I doubt he will even be on the top 30 page. If he hasn't returned by the end of the summer he will barely make the top 100
I personally think that sucks. It took me over two years to earn just over 2000 coolcliks. I've more than doubled that score in a month on the new system, and remember that with the constant inflation every month from now this process will accelerate faster and faster!
Furthermore I miss the anonymous sad clicks. I've only ever had one bad rep since we started this new system, from Violent D for saying his ICQ Flower made him look gay.
I just don't think the new system is very fun any more :(
I used to prefer patiently building collecting my coolclicks one at a time, cursing when someone anonymously gave me a sadclick and wondering who it was and why :D
A person's reputation was patiently built over a long time, slowly, bit by bit.
I mean no disrespect to Clubber at all when I say this but I don't think I even knew you before a couple of months ago and already you have a reputation of 1000 and within a couple of months at that rate will overtake our all time most esteemed member Wacko in reputation.
That's just not right imo.
I personally vote we go back to the old coolclick system.
Anybody with me?

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
By flipshits do you mean Hairy Terry? He's been banned for awhile now hasn't he?
Yes,a lot of peoples reps have been skyrocketing (mine included). The main problem is we CAN'T GIVE REP ANONYMOUSLY!!!!! That's the main reason right there. WHEN SOMEONE GIVES REP TO SOMEONE, THAT PERSON USUALLY RETURNS THE FAVOR, WHETHER IT BE GOOD OR BAD.

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
Oh by the way Bilbo, I've been on this forum since 2004, I just didn't always have time to post as much, and you've been here since 2005. I'm older than you! :o:o:o

That's definitely partly it but the inflating punch power is the biggest problem imo.
It means it will always be easier and easier to earn rep in the future than was in the past and is right now. That kind of sucks to me.
Also I think its undemocratic!
During a general election you might be the most intelligent, well educated man on the planet who has thouroughly researched every nominee before you vote.
Your next door neighbour on the other hand might be a complete idiot who can barely muster the intelligence to mark his ballot paper correctly.
Nevertheless you still both only get 1 vote each, on account of every man (and woman) being equal. That's democracy.
Our new rep system where people like myself and Mick have huge punch power whilst other longterm members who are every bit as respected such as Big H, Scrap and Mark TKO have very little just makes no sense to me.
Coolclicks was the ultimate system imo. 1 click either good or bad per person. Perfect democracy in action.

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
Saddo fixed it to where you can limit the rep you give someone so if you give 10 for a joke and give 20 for an article or 30 for picture of Bilbo than you can put things into perspective.
I took action with the rep I give for the prediction contest because I noticed that some people with less than 100 posts had a 4 or 5 punch power already. That's ridiculous.
Anyway, I think what Saddo did fixed the problem. I think.

That doesn't really fix the problem imo as reps are still inflating.
The only way to make the system work longterm is if people's punchpower doesn't inflate at all. Putting it on an inflatory system just means that in time it will spiral out of control.

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
Bilbs, I hate to bother to go look but after how many Rep. Points do earn 1 punch point?
Do you know?
-
Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
Ok so I just checked and every 100 Reps. gives you 1 power point.
Maybe Saddo can change it to every 500 Reps. gives you 1 point?
:)

Yep every 100 points.
So say in two weeks from now you and me will be able to add a whole rep point to anyone we click.
Even if we choose to limit the amount or rep we give per punch the problem is still there and will get bigger and bigger over time.
At the current rate by Christmas you and me will have punch power of AT LEAST 1000 per hit!
That would mean if we gave a full power hit, a brand new member could get full rep from say you, me, Gamo and Gorilla and ALREADY have a bigger reputation than Wacko! :o
The system sucks imo:mad:

Just sent a message saying that. The ability to give so much to a person at one time is also what's causing the inflation, as well as not being anonymous.
People won't give bad rep because they're afraid of getting it back, and people give a lot of good rep, because they know 80% of the time they're also going to get it back. ;)
The reason my rep count has went up like the gas prices is that I too give a lot of good rep, but I also used to give a lot of cool clicks too. Whenever I see a post I like, I'd coolclick or rep that person every time (unless I had already CC'd him earlier that day or had to spread some rep around), so it is NOT because I am a brown-noser.
But I will admit, I don't give people bad rep because I don't want to get it back either or start a repping war... :-X

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
Maybe fix it to where you need 10,000 reps to get a new "punch" number?
Or the higher punch you get the more or less (depending on how you wanted to work it) reps you need to get more "power?"
Either way the strong get stronger. I bet there are some people who have to jump through hoops to get rep and others who get rep for farting. ;D

That doesn't fix the problem though. The root of the problem is that we have punch stats which constantly inflate.
The only way to solve the problem is to go back to EVERYBODY having the same punch power!
Or say when someone reaches a milestone 5000 posts for example they get 1 more punchpower but its fixed for everyone when they hit 5000 to get that increase.
The current system is fundamentally flawed imo.
1 click per person is the best system imo.

He could make it so that you're not allowed to recieve but so much rep at once until your rep count or punch power reaches a certain number. (That way a newbie couldn't come on here and get repped by a powerful poster like Mick and already have a high punch power. Only a poster like Wacko who deserved it could get it.)

Yeah but that's a cumbersome thing to have to do. Means you have to search for old posts and realistically how many people would do that every day to make sure he doesn't fall behind.
I just think the system itself is flawed.
The coolclick system was much simpler and more importantly worked much better.
People gave both coolclicks and sadclicks, we had special smilies devoted to both, the anonyminty ensured people were free to click without fear of retribution or without looking like they were pandering for a coolclick themselves.
Nobody's reputation would get left behind just because they didn't log in for a few weeks and any reputation that anybody built was deserved.
If you had 2000 coolclicks under the old system, it mean you had been clicked 2000 times. No trickery, no illusion that was 2000 clicks.
Under this new system you could have a reputation of 2000 and been clicked less than 100 times, in another couple months you get that score by being clicked just 3 or 4 times:-\

That makes sense...
So if I can't click them that means that can't earn any punching power and only those with a small number can Rep. thus leaving me to Rep. members like Wacko, Bilbo, BG etc. etc.
So if I Rep. them their power will increase but not rapidly which means we would all somewhat be the same and.......

It's not for us to have to do that though! Can't you not see that the system at present is a little broken.
It doesn't matter what tweak Saddo does sooner or later we will arrive at a point where the vast majority of users have a puncher power in the 1000's.
If you place a limit on punch power eventually EVERYBODY will just hit that maximum limit and we'll all have the same punch power.
Which really begs the question why not just do that now and set everyone's punch power back to 1?
Fair democracry in action.

If you place a limit on punch power eventually EVERYBODY will just hit that maximum limit and we'll all have the same punch power.
Which really begs the question why not just do that now and set everyone's punch power back to 1?
Fair democracry in action.
Set everyones punch power to 1?
WTF... Why?

lol you're not getting it yet I can tell.
It's because an inflation based system doesn't work longterm because as everybody's reputation and punch power increases each individual rep point means less and less.
Remember this system is supposed to work for the next few years, like coolclicks did right.......
So when we started the new forum I think my punch power was about 29.
Now just over a month later its 60.
As interest increases more and more each month by the end of the year we will have punch powers of 1000 or more. And so will everybody else!
Then a year from then we will probably have a punch power of 10,000
The following year 100,000
And so on, surely you must know how interest works right?
Withing 5 years the top members will have a puncher power of a million or more!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's completely absurd!

Well I'm sure Saddo has thought about this before he implemented the system. Once he comes around I'm sure he'll let us know the deal.

Yeah hopefully but can you see what I'm getting at?
If my score has doubled in a month, then logically it will double again next month as everybody's rep has inflated accordingly.
So a simple punch calculation follows.
My starting power 28
My current power 60
Next month projected 120
Then 240
480
960
1920
3840
7680
15360
30720
30720 is my projected punch power, not rep PUNCH POWER by Christmas!
Then by Christmas 09
12582910 PUNCH POWER!!!!!!! by Christmas 09 :o
Now can you see the problem!!!!!
Think of rats breeding, you start with 2 but in a few years you could have billions! Can you see the problem now?

Re: I percieve a big future problem with rep
Is it a bit odd that Bilbo is complaining about the rep system, when just the other day he was begging everyone to rep him? ;D

Hey guys!
I'm almost on the verge of a double milestone, 10,000 posts, the 11th Saddo member to reach this elusive number and almost 4000 reputation points.
Now cynics may say this only demonstrates that I have no life beyond this board, and they would be correct.
Which is why I ask for sympathy rep points from each of you.
Thankyou
