Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
I'll ride with Santa Cruz. I think Mares had kind of blown his wad. Leo reminds me of what a featherweight Margarito would look like. They even share the same 70's mustache. I see the less warn man grinding Mares down to the midway point though it could come earlier. I don't think Mares has his head in the game anymore. You wont be wanting to have to take a leak during this one.

Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
I agree with mares being shop worn and his waning focus. I'm not sure if he ever mentally recovered from that KO. I still have him with the greater potential though and I wonder if LSC can be outsmarted down the stretch. Call it a hunch, you know those times where as much as it makes sense, i have a gut feeling mares may have one more in him. If it runs close though i'm sure the little Haymon elves will be hard at work earning their pay.

Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Agreed. He might have one left and Leo is a little wet behind the ears having not really been in deep at this level. I think Mares is gun shy and I also think he he was wrong to leave the Espinoza's. They kept him grounded.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
I think Cruz out works him for the points win. But if it ends in a knock out I think it'll be Mares scoring it
-
I'm picking Mares he's fought better opposition where Santa Cruz has fought taxi drivers for years. Close fight but I think Mares takes it. Don't forget that Santa Cruz is moving up
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
If Mares is there mentally he'll win. He has too many tools in the shed for Santa Cruz who is very one dimensional.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Fan wise I seriously hope Santa Cruz chops wood on Mares for wide 12. But Leo has moved so rapidly that he is the type you fear hitting the wall. He looked lethargic and void of defense last out and it comes down to approach of Mares. If he boxes long and has cleared the ghosts, I think he'll keep Leo planted on slow feet with a decent size advantage. Bully him a bit late..or hit him 101 low blows. Hope not
-
Mares has been really inactive if I'm not mistaken.
Hard not to favor Santa Cruz on consistency. However the more talented and explosive fighter is Mares.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Interesting, I thought Santa Cruz actually looked a little one paced and pedestrian in his last fight as well, plus he hasn't got big power. Assuming they both rise to this and come correct, I've got Mares. He's bigger and more talented, LSC reminds me of a smaller Margarito in a big way.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Close fight. I fancy Mares at the price. Pretty close to a 50/50 for me.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Mares is definitely better and Leo hasn't at all impressed me in his last few fights. If mares at all shows up, I think he wins handily.
-
Anyone know if this is going to be shown on UK TV?

I don't know if he's worn-out or Gonzalez put a huge dent in his confidence. That KO has something to do with his performance now, he's a different fighter. I like Santa Cruz too in this one, but I wish Mares would come out of the funk he's in now.

It's on BT/ESPN

Abner Mares vs Leo Santa Cruz.
A sticky thread for Mosley-Mayorga but not this? Televised bouts start in about half an hour I think, if a mod wants to make me feel like I contribute here, that would be neat.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Wow, audio is terrible? Anyone getting the same echo's? Annnd Bump.
-
Re: Abner Mares vs Leo Santa Cruz.
Ok that worked. Let me try to merge ;D

Re: Abner Mares vs Leo Santa Cruz.
Haha cool man, I saw you had a thread in the links below this but only after I posted, wasn't on the first page. I can't believe this is on free TV and Mosley Mayorga is PPV, unreal.

Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Damn I thought I had time to run to the store. Got my zones mixed up

Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
I hope Atlas doesn't ruin the night for me.

Telecast here sounds terrible? Teddy sounds like he's calling it while talking into a rotary fan. Very disturbing
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Teddy loves his lil sayings doesn't he. If you played a drinking game where you drank everytime he makes an analogy you would be hammered by round 2. Nice job by Ceja getting out of that round.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Ruiz made the mistake of having too much pride to take a knee...think it could have gone a lil longer though he was still making defensive moves.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Nice little fight that! Stream was choppy right at the finish so couldn't tell if the stoppage was early or Ruiz should have hung on or taken a knee, either way nice action.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Big win for Ceja. Big disappointment for Ruiz

I think he was done. That left hook rang his bell and he couldn't even wrap up Ceja to hold on. He started taking some vicious shots, I think the right call was made.

Yea you right, on replay it was a huge knockdown and Ruiz' was really planked. Good fight though! Is Mares-LSC after this little filler for sure?
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Gotta give Mares the edge on competition. He has been on the winning side of some pretty close fights though, the whole tourney type thing with Perez, Darchinyan, and Agbeko.

It's actually a huge edge if you look it over. LSC has fought basically nobody? I didn't realize he was so untested. I'm getting drunker by the second but I think Mares kicks his ass!

I believe so. I wasn't aware they were even having this filler fight. I thought they cut it down to two fights because espn has an arena football league contract to honor.

Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Luna is really winging those hooks....annnd its over. This was definitely a good stoppage, guy was just covering up not moving.

I took Ruiz by ko in a boxing challenge. I missed it so will have to catch it later.
Wow that was a nice finish by Luna.

Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Real curious as to fight time weight. Mares is the shorter stocky guy but he looked bigger at the weigh in.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Cant stand this ring walk method. To lit up and separated.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Crazy to think that of all fights its this one not at the Forum tonight! Definitely has old school feel
Jack Reiss the ref :-X someone is about to be hounded all night. WAR LEO!
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Mares said he didn't want a war. Guess he lied.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
I'd have to give that first round to Mares.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Mares early, Santa Cruz gave it all back late! Quality. Teddy spot on Mares squares
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Have a feeling this may be a FOTY good start. Mares does tend to fade later letting guys get back into fights.
-
Re: Mares v Santa Cruz-this Saturday
Santa Cruz is "machine-like". I can't say I'd be surprised if he hurt Mares in one of those wild exchanges.
