The number of Americans living in poverty grew by 8,440,000 since May 15, according to a Columbia University study. You watch, you listen to the way John F Kennedy spoke or Dwight D Eisenhower or you watch the way Jimmy Carter spoke.... We're talking only now manner of speaking .... If you think the insurgency America faced from five million Iraqi Sunnis was bad imagine facing forty five million incredibly pissed off Iranian Shiite smarting from decades living under an American backed dictator. And Carter threw away any chance of being reelected for a second term by appointing hard money guy Paul Volcker to run the Fed. Carter knew Volcker would crank up interest rates to nearly twenty percent to choke off inflation that decades of American presidents had avoided dealing with but which had become a huge economy-threatening problem in the aftermath of oil prices tripling after the Iranian revolution. He knew the resulting recession from the interest rate rises would guarantee no second term for him but he did it because it was the right thing for the country. Invading Iran would have given him eighty plus percent approval ratings and timed for the summer of 1980 would have given him guaranteed reelection. Carter did/didn't do both of these things because they were the right thing for the country to do even though they caused great personal expense. Now that's a strong leader. Imagine the current occupant of the White House doing something for somebody else's gain. Ha.
