As for this retina damage stuff - It happened to the Japanese boxers but it has never happened to me or any of my Australian team mates. I don't know if it was permanent or some people are more prone to it. Sorry I can't give much info on the details.
I do agree you can't take anything away from the winner if you choose to go into a fight wounded by telling them about it.
I think it's unfortunate that there is so much stigma attached to loosing a boxing bout compared to other sports that a lot of beginners especially feel the need to justify it. People often ask me what my record is expecting it to be 99 % wins unless I'm crap but I think your record doesn't necessarily sum up your ability. I always refuse to tell people my record now.

Agreed... if you give 100% of yourself in a match , can look in the mirror and honestly say to yourself" I gave 100% and left nothing in the tank " You are a winner ! ! . Regardless of the outcome ! However if you conclude that you didn’t take your training serious, your opponent serious and lost due to fatigue or something of that nature , thats a different story . O0
