Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
Mayorga has never felt fear in his life, not even when battered by Trinidad! When he calls out the best, you know he wants them with the worst intentions possible.
It is too bad his best days are behind him and we will likely see his skills erode overnight in any of his next couple fights. People will undermine his accomplishments and not give him his credit for what hey did in his heyday, which was go in with the best in the sport, put on an amazing/entertaining show. Heck of a fighter and hell of a character. I believe that a prime Mayorga would have given Cotto all he could handle and this would have been an incredible fight. Not so much anymore

If Margarito is going to lose, he might as well as do it against Cotto where he can make his biggest payday.
Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
I have issues when fighters like Mayorga are marked and or referenced as "If he was in his prime" (Bowe is another fighter who applies to this)
When was Mayorgas prime? When did it start? When did it finish?
He was in his prime for 1 year and a couple of months? Where he beat Lewis, Vernon 2 times.....
On the other hand you've got a fighter like Cotto whos been fighting World Class opponents since he faced Juuko in his 9th fight OR if people wanna be pushy you can say it was Bazan for his 13th pro fight. Now how do you determine Cottos prime? Has it passed? Is he in it now? Has it not even happened yet?
No doubt Mayorga had a good little run but I think that a fighter like Cotto would be too much for him. Something that NONE of those fighters had that Mayorga faced was 'Body punching' I'm not saying they didn't do it I'm saying none of them were/are know as body punchers. When you have someone like Mayorga who drinks, smokes and partys hard all you gotta do is touch' em up to the body and he's done.

Well it's not like Mayorga or Bowe didn't have primes... Every fighter is at his best at some point... For some they only really apply themselves in a couple of fights, maybe even just one fight do they really look like a worldbeater. I see what your saying that it's hard to say their prime as in an era, but with fighters like Bowe there's nothing wrong with comparing him to other HW's based on the first Holyfield fight.. Which was really his only great performance. Still, it was enough to prove his worth as a great fighter, he just didn't achieve greatness, the potential was all there. With Mayorga you can really say he was in his prime at 147, as he looked his best in his few fights there. I think he and Cotto would have been one hell of a fight as well, Mayorga could bang like a mofo at welter and obviously take incredible punishment. Cotto may have won but Mayorga would've landed on him, who knows?
Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
This fight will be total and brutal domination. cotto will just take him apart but it will be fun to watch.
Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
i dont understand this, i thought the whole idea of the cotto - margarito co-main event card theyve been trying to setup for the last 2 years was to lead in to cotto margarito
Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
only positive i see here is that it will free up margarito after he KTFO cintron to maybe fight judah like he was originally going to, unless judah mosley is gonna happen
nothing would make me happoer then to see judah beat margarito and see many people here have to accept the fact their savior has lost to judah :D:D
Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
Dan Rafael of ESPN explained the whole Cotto/Margarito/Mayorga thing today. Here's my quick summary of the whole thing:
1. Cotto-Gomez and Margarito-Cintron II are set for April.
2. Cotto is scheduled to fight the Margarito-Cintron winner in July. However, if the Margarito-Cintron fight is a real war and the winner won't be ready to fight in July (say.. because of cuts that need to heal), then Mayorga will step in and take their place for the July fight.
3. If the Margarito-Cintron winner is ready to go in July, then they'll face Cotto, and Mayorga will fight on the undercard.
4. Then, if Cotto beats Margarito/Cintron, he could face Mayorga in the fall.
Make sense?
P.S. I'm still curious what weight Cotto-Mayorga would be at. I can't see Mayorga at 147.
Re: Apparentlly fight between Cotto vs Mayorga in 19/jul/08
Though I pick Cotto to win it will not be easy as some of you are making out....
Mayorga is VERY strong at WW...And though he never shows it he can box some what....Plus other then his first bout in which no one really counts..(If we did Hopkins would be a no body)...Mayorga has only been KO'd by 2 hard hitters that hit harder then Cotto not to mention box much better then he does...Mayorga should not be shrugged off...If he makes weight fairly well without draining himself...Cotto is in for a hard hard fight...One that if he lost would not really be that much of an upset...
Cotto's jaw is a question somewhat....Mayorga is dangerous early so if it happens it would happen early...

Yes, i think most would agree that 2002-2003 was Mayorga's prime..

Obviously Cotto has improved leaps and bounds since his 9th (or 13th) pro fights.. why would that be considered his prime? I think the general consensus is Cotto is in his prime right now, or he is A) near it or B) not far removed from it. It is safe to say Mayorga at age 34 and a number of wars and a couple brutal knock outs under his belt is no longer in his prime.
I dont see the argument? Because Mayorga wasn't as technical as a lot of champions he should not be considered to have a point in his career when he was at his best?
