Re: Cortez to referee Calzaghe/Hopkins fight
The funny thing i find about all the Hatton fans who complain about Cortez is that they forget to mention that in Ricky's other big fight (tszyu) he was blatantly helped by a hometown ref in Dave Parris.
He was allowed to do anything he wanted, holding, deliberat low blows, whatever. Gota take the good with the bad boys.
Re: Cortez to referee Calzaghe/Hopkins fight
This is great news for Joe IMO...
Cortez came under so much flack for the way he handled Hatton becuse before the fight Hattons holding was a big issue
before this fight Cortez's anti UK and Pro American fighters is a big issue and he has proved he takes too much info into accunt and goes in with his plan set.
He will let Joe get away with murder you watch ;)

Do u think if Cortez lets Joe get away with murder that all Joe's fans will admit it?
Do u think all the guys who said Cortez was anti British will take it back?
Re: Cortez to referee Calzaghe/Hopkins fight
its tough being the ref.........just like in football.....if the ref gives a penalty the, one team loves him the other hates.......... i hope cortez uses his years of experince and does a good job, we dont it to be like the last time where people spoke more about the ref then the fight its self

He waved away the critics as being "moaning Brit fans"... not sure he believes he did anything wrong at all.
Remember Hatton-Floyd was a Golden Boy do like this one. Would Hopkins be stepping in that ring if he didn't have EVERYTHING in his favour? ;)

Well then it'll be the first time in a long time Joe hasnt had everything in his favor right? Namethe last fight he had where he had things against him?
Will make his victory mean all that more.

If you mean by "having everything in his favour" fighting in Britain then when did Hopkins last have everything NOT in his favour.
This fight wouldn't have even happened if Calzaghe hadn't accepted ALL Hopkins terms.
And Calzaghe had to go to Germany just a couple of years ago for his mandatory against Veit. ;)

Hopkins was quite often the underdog in his fights. He has had the crowd against him on many occasions, fighting on opponents terms.
Name the last time Calzaghe did not have his choice of ref against a good opponent (not Veit) without a crowd who was on his side? Never?
You cannot accuse Hopkins of only fighting when things are in his favour. The man is 43, about 5 years past his prime, thats not in his favor to start with, and will have way more effect on the fight than any ref could.

Just because some people made Hopkins underdog doesn't mean he didn't have things in his favour.
I didn't even know Calzaghe CHOOSES his ref per fight :o Tell me more?
Calzaghe has fought to many a hostile crowd in England (my Welsh pals swear it)
Hopkins is 5 years past his prime and yes Calzaghe's win will mean... not much really, i know i know. But if Calzaghe loses he's exposed, right?

Not exposed to me. His record is too good to be exposed. Kessler was a top fighter, the demolition jobs he did on Mundine, Beyer and Andrade proved that. I think it'll take some gloss off his career, but he has done too much to be exposed.
Joe may not chose his refs, but most of his fights have been Warren promotions and i think Frank would get his ref of choice.
Answer your question? Im not a hater of Joe i just say it how i think it is.
Re: Cortez to referee Calzaghe/Hopkins fight
Personally I think Cortez Is too "Camera Conscious" at times and can get overly Involved at times. The early portions of Hatton/Mayweather were just terrible,All that Slapping the fighters...Gloves,Backs, Arms and when they closed quarters he was always Inserting himself as a factor.Chatty fella also.
He'll have his hands full here. Both Hopkins and Calzaghe know how to work A blind side and are not adverse to Bending the rules.Really I think they could care less about the ref,The level of genuine animosity and tension is emence.

OK eagle, you're not a Joey hater.. Just funny how you counter a "Hopkins has evertything in his favour" comment (which is obvious and true) with a "when has Joe not had everything in his favour" ;)
Re: Cortez to referee Calzaghe/Hopkins fight
Cortez was undeniably crap in the Hatton fight. Shouldnt play a part in this though. Not a factor IMO.
Re: Cortez to referee Calzaghe/Hopkins fight
I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THAT COMMENT!!!Cortez might have refereed loads of top draw bouts in previous years, but you have to be honest with yourself his refereeing during the 10rounds of the mayor "UNDEFEATED" clash between Mayweather Vs Hatton was a total SHAMBLES.I mean "COME ON!"He broke up one of fights of the Decade 14 TIMES during the first round and continued with that figure throughout the 2nd,3rd,4th,5th rounds. He only seemed to let the fight progress in the latter rounds after he knew Hatton was getting frustrated due to him(Nob-Head Cortez)parting them both(Hatton "n" Mayweather)as well as talking throughout the bout to Hatton. How BLOODY frustrating that must of been for the Hitman to have a arsehole of a ref shouting orders at you as you try to work to the body up close.
There's no dought whatsoever that Cortez absolutely WRECKED one of the most anticipated fights in the last 10-15 years!TOTALLY CRAP CORTEZ!A great Boxing referee should always act as a ghost by only appearing in the fight when totally necessary i.e LOW BLOWS,HEADBUTS,ELBOWS,THROWING,RABBIT PUNCHES,CLINCHING for too long!He should always have a sence of not being there in the same ring in any fight.Thats part of the job!
