If a guy is a multi weight world champion until someone from said division can beat him he should be considered the champ of that division just so long as he abides to fight within the 12month time frame.
The Ring has no 12 month time frame limit to my knowledge.
Re: Calzaghe's Ring status
I have no problem with Him being #1 Ring champ of 2 divisions, as long as he defends them both within a reasonable time its all good to me...
To me he can defend the Lightheavy crown against Roy Jones in Nov of 08 and then drop down to 168 and Defend against Miranda in June of 09..
I think since Calzaghe is a legend and has earned this status as well as being long in tooth he would end up only doing this for a year anyway and its not like there is a young Kessleresque guy at 175 that deserves a shot tomorrow, so I am pleased with the current status, seems completely fair, any fighter who cares to complain should try to measure there career against Joes and 99.9% of them wouldnt measure up..

I get where you are coming from, but I still think a fighter should fight in his division at least every 12 months. Otherwise it hardly fits as 'his division' any more. In your proposed schedule Calzaghe will go almost 20 months without fights at 168 - that seems a bit much for my taste.
Re: Calzaghe's Ring status
Actually good point....my theory would only be reasonable if he defended at 168 1st... Thanks for the correction;)
Re: Calzaghe's Ring status
The SMw is open right now, sure a lot are tipping Kessler to rule it, but there are a few there to stake a claim, and since none are as of yet going to fight eachother the Ring could not name a new champion.
If the #2 was about to face the #3 you can bet your left nut the ring would put preasure on Calzaghe to vacate it if he was fighting at 175, or strip him of it.
And it is fair IMO, devisions need champions.
they are letting him hold both right now because pavlik could move up and joe come back down to meet at SMw, the ring do want the best to have their belts, should pavlik win, and he has a good chance, they would want him to take their belt.

So if Pavlik steps up and meets Joe at 168 and beats him (theoretically) he would hold the ring titles at 160 and 168 correct?

Correct, just like Joe holds championships at 175 and 168 right now
;)

As long as he hasn't lost his midle weight belt before then, or doesn't vacate when he moves up, then yes.

I fixed it for you
Re: Calzaghe's Ring status
Decisions, decisions. Poor Joe Calzaghe having to sit home and decide on what weight shall he be king in. One thing is for certain there is little left to doubt him about even for his sternest critics.
I would like to see him take a go at the 175lb division. He has solidified himself as the greatest 168lb champion to reign why not a new challenge.
No matter what he chooses I am sure he will be successful.
Re: Calzaghe's Ring status
The Rings championship policy allows for multi-division champions. Giving fighters of today the opportunity to achieve what Henry Armstrong did.

If Calzaghe comes in over 168 Pavlik will get the 175 belts. If Calzaghe goes at 168 Pavlik will hold all three. This will be the first time in this sport that this has happened since 1938.
So if Pavlik steps up and meets Joe at 168 and beats him (theoretically) he would hold the ring titles at 160 and 168 correct?
He would hold all three and a defenite future in the hall of fame as well.
