Sure JMM is smaller and he hasn't carried the power very well yet but I think he's well suited to give PBF problems.
Floyd gets respect in my book for coming back and not taking a warmup fight, this is a fight Floyd can lose, I doubt he does but he very well could lose the fight
Mayweather will beat Cotto, keep on dreaming.
Re: How much credit would Mayweather get..
The problem here is that in the Diaz fight, you could see that Diaz was physically stronger then Marquez. That pretty much can't be debated, the stronger guy inside was Diaz even if he didn't have the greater punching power. Certainly that advantage is only going to be amplified for Mayweather who is a naturally bigger guy then Diaz.
However it shouldn't mean to much because Mayweather doesn't even use his physical strength to his advantage all that much. I think moreso then size, it's going to be the accuracy of Floyd which will score him the stoppage imo. Throughout his career it's always been the well placed shots that JMM didn't see which has hurt him.
He should get lots of credit for beating Marquez and I think he will once the fight rolls around because I think Marquez will do his fair share of landing. Marquez is one ofthe best counter punchers of our lifetime and he's deadly accurate. If anyone can pick around Floyd's guard I would think it's Marquez.
Either way, number 2 pound for pound and one of the most skilled fighters of our generation, he should get credit.
Re: How much credit would Mayweather get..
I think Lyle might have it right - this might be one of Floyd's tougher fights. I learned a while ago not to bet against PBF, but I really think Marquez will give him a tougher fight than everyone seems to think.
Re: How much credit would Mayweather get..
If Mayweather fought Marquez 5 years ago when this fight was supposed to be made I would give Mayweather credit for beating him, if he beat him, but 5 years later now all of a sudden Mayweather wants to fight Marquez. Fuck that.
Re: How much credit would Mayweather get..
5 years ago, how has it changed since then? They are in the exact same situation but its 5 years later, which if anything helps Marquez because comparably Mayweather is slower now than he was, and Marquez moving up has in a p4p sense retained most of his speed.
Re: How much credit would Mayweather get..
Marquez wanted Mayweather 5 years ago, but of course, Mayweather ducked him. Now, Marquez is 37. He's a lot older. Mayweather is still in his prime. He just picks and chooses.

What are you talking about? 5 years ago Marquez was 2 or 3 divisions below Mayweather and I can't recall anyone ever calling for this one to really be made. In fact the first time I heard the names paired together was when Marquez called out Mayweather after the Diaz fight.
Re: How much credit would Mayweather get..
Absolutely NONE. It's a simple case of "cherry picking".
Shame on PBF for not challenging these guys... PWill, Mosley, Cotto, and Margarito.

After the Jose Luis Castillo fight. Marquez said "I want him" talking about Floyd Mayweather "Castillo was robbed and I want to fight him. In my eyes he still hasn't beaten a mexican"
Ok, so I check Box rec right now. I'm sorry it was 6 years ago...HUGE difference. Mayweather fought Castillo at 134. Marquez' next fight was at 132 (not including the Medina fight which at the time was already agreed upon)

Marquez fought at 126 in 2002 when Mayweather fought Castillo, He didn't weigh 132 until August of 2003. At that point they were pretty close in wieght, but at that point Mayweather way more advantages than he does now, he threw more punches, he was overly defensive, he threw combinations, Marquez would have been completely overwhelmed by that version of Mayweather, this version of Mayweather suits Marquez way more than that one did.

Floyd has had a long layoff and Marquez hasn't been OUTSTANDING at lightweight but those factor in to Floyd's ego. Floyd could come into the fight figuring "If I'm just in shape I will take this win easily" but we all know JMM is not to be counted out.
I think if JMM is able to add weight properly this could be Floyd's toughest fight since the first Jose Luis Castillo fight.

It could be a tough fight for Floyd, but there did seem to be a big size difference at the press conference, in height and bulk. Just don't see Marquez causing enough damage, but hopefully he has the smarts to make it competitive.

WTF? Where did that come from? I never even mentioned Cotto.
Bomp, I think JMM is a good enough boxer to cause a stylistic challenge to Floyd Mayweather Jr., he's a very smart fighter.
