In my heart though.... I keep thinking about the hammering he was taking from McClellan and still managed to come back. You can't teach that kind of heart. I'd love to think Jones had him hurt and followed in showboating with his hands down just as Nige fired a bone rattling right hook which put him to sleep.
I constantly go with my heart though and get it all wrong so Jones stoppage round 7
Benn V Toney would have been a war....
Its soo good to hear there's Benn fans out there on here.I just found him soo raw and exciting to witness.I've been watching his fights on dvd yet again. He caught my eye as a kid while i'd watch his live fights on t.v with me father.Nigel Benn was a true gent and game fighter. He was for me a really exciting fighter.I liked where he's go in sometime totally open and end badly stung and rattled but he just kept coming and firing heavy bombs, even sometimes leading in witha right hand lead, which caught out soo many of his opponants.
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
Toney would be too much for Benn too imo.
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
I actually think Toney would have had bigger problems with Eubank and Collins.....maybe it's just me but with Toney's defense and counter punching he may actually have stopped Benn earlier than Roy. Now Bernard Hopkins in his youth would have had SERIOUS trouble with Benn and Eubank....not so much Collins though
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
The timing was wrong, Benn was due to fight Jones after McClelland but I know Benn was finished by then.
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
With hindsight if Nigel did catch Roy, Jones would fall! Catching Roy would be difficult because he had great reflexes.
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
"If he caught Roy"....how many times has it been said and how many times did it actually happen?
How would a Benn-Jackson fight have gone?
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
I give a Primed Benn every bit an equal chance in this one,a fight that DEF should of happened after the McClellan tragedy. It was ripe and ready and much talked about but Roy could bank heavily beating the piss outta over matched and over hyped "people bought this crap" Pazienza with HBO's cushy contract and he knew it.He ultimately did not 'need' Benn,risk/reward.....but Benn EARNED that shot.
Much is made of Benn effected after the war with Gerald...and he was big time.Though to this day I think it also effected Jones Jr also.He spoke openly and often about permanent injury....not getting payed enough to fight this guy...or that guy and watching his good friend McClellan left in that condition ...which can happen to any fighter on any given night...sat with him for a long time.As it did anyone with a conscious and heart.
On paper and stylistically Jones out speeds, out shifts and out maneuvers Benn for a win.But Benn was all but assumed and second thought cannon fodder going into the McClellan fight. He was supposed to get pelayed and mashed....he was predictable,he was so open, his chin was known to take a bath when least expected and Gerald's path of destruction was flat phenominal....he literally layed waist to those in his path.Benn and Gerald displayed enough heart, grit and sheer will power to well up the eyes of many a man that night....I had goose fooking bumps as they went back and forth.Benn stood up to raw flush power shots and showed a tonnage of one intangible they do not and cannot measure on paper...Undeniable Desire and fortitude. He was no Merqui Sosa...Tony Thorton...Bryant Brannon or groomed for a blood letting of a showcase Pazienza. He was a Championship calibur fighter who was most dangerous when hurt, you simply had to respect that power or it would catch up to you.Roy had never faced anyone that fierce and unpredictably dangerous up to that point......and thats a fact!

sorry but this is overrating Nigel Benn big time. Roy would've had Benn hurt early and finished him.
Roy was one of the best ever at reading his opponents and it showed when he faced the most technically skilled fighter in the sport at that time, James Toney. RJJ was an unbelievable ring general.
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
People keep saying we'll if Nigel Benn caught RJJ, but what about when RJJ catches Nigel Benn ?
Nigel Benn's chin wasn't exactly solid, and RJJ hit damn hard at Super Middleweight. And i'd certainly put money on RJJ catching Nigel Benn first, and finishing the job.
Nigel Benn was too reckless at times, and his defense was all over the place. He did improve somewhat in his laster career, but he was still very hittable.
If Thulani Malinga can give Nigel Benn hell twice, and if Michael Watson could outbox Nigel Benn and stop him. Then i'll for certain go with RJJ who would KO Nigel Benn within 6 rounds.

Don't you just love it when people make themselves look a tit by talking shit lol. Fair enough Jones didn't fight the greatest names in history (although he has 3 ATG's on his resume) but he fought the best he could most of the time and the biggest problem for him was that the LHW division (when he was in his prime) were all a country mile behind.

Me too. Roy Jones hit harder than Benn IMO no doubt. But it's not just the fact he hit harder, in his prime he was probably the hardest fighter to hit of all time and if you did take a chance and go for him he could punish you in a nasty way and punishement is what Benn would have taken!

Sorry....but I'd very much like to know where the overrating Benn big time part is? Is it the on paper Jones owns all advantages and wins part....or the Benns main assets were his heart and power ?If in fact Jones had faced a fighter as fierce and constantly as dangerous as a Benn...I'm all ears Mate?
As big a fan as I am of Benn Ive always given credit to Jones for shutting down Toney.Personally though,I think Toney went into that fight with a conceeding attitude...Jones got into his head,he out Toneyd Toney. It was as clear as Toney shit attitude about the weight and he was trailing before the bell even rang.Is that Jones fault..nah.He did exactly what he should have done and in impressive fashion. In hindsight the weight would not have mattered in the least.
The contrast between Toney and Benn could not have been any further apart.Toney was a master at timing out rounds...he found ground usually ring center and would work off foundation....never one quick of foot and it showed many times. He never fought an entire round, not that I can remember.Benns best asset was his attack...yes which saw him run into surprises but would equally put Jones in harms way....unlike a layed back and content Toney. If Jones knew he had you boxed in...reacting and readable he could be content to walk you around all night.Make you look a fool but not press in instances. As nuts as it sounds Benns abandonment for fundementals was a plus in spots....had he tried to use his new found 'boxing, jab' vs McClellan he may very well have been taken out.Best thing that happened to him was getting blasted so early,It flicked a switch, instinct.Jones cream of the crop, pure reflex but If anything I think Its Benn whos being underrated really.Bit on & on here bud,,,blame the caffeine
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
This is a fight that Benn would have had a very slim chance of winning.
He would need to be Oliver McCall style lucky to beat Jones.
That being sai I do think that Jones avoided fighting Benn as he thought him to dangerous.
Re: Nigel Benn vs Roy Jones!
Roy would be favourite but Benn was at his best at super middle, he was experienced and moved his head a lot more. Eubanks could not defeat him the second time because he was a much better fighter. The old Benn would not have beaten Gerald either.
