I've never seen anything like it - Gatti fights et al. Guess the fact that it was two boxing superstars at their peak adds a lot of clout - but then again thats what made it all the more enthralling (good word that).
As Larry Merchant said of the fight , and still does now, 'Nobody breathed for eight minutes'. Am not Larry's biggest fan but I can certainly understand that
Well it is overrated due to the fact, people call it the greatest action fight of all time when that clearly isn't true. Yes it had one great round, but the others Marvin Hagler was in control of despite the cut.
Mark i could give you 10 fights right now, that are better fights. And if you watched them over a course of a week, i guarantee you would enjoy them more. Because i don't think you've seen them so it would be like watching it live.
Kevin Kelley vs Troy Dorsey
Kevin Kelley vs Derrick Gainer 1
Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Marvin Johnson 1
Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Yaqui Lopez 2
Bobby Chacon vs Rafael Limon 4
Bobby Chacon vs Cornelius Boza Edwards 2
Michael Moorer vs Bert Cooper
Charles Williams vs Merqui Sosa 1 or 2
Wilfredo Gomez vs Lupe Pintor
Kelvin Seabrooks vs Thierry Jacob
And i didn't even have to really think about that list either, there's plenty of better fights treat yourself to these classics.
One of the reasons people think its better than any of those fights , is the magnitude of both participants , not many people out of boxing would know many off your list.
But as ever its a matter of opinion.
Yea i agree but i tend to forget how big of a name a boxer is, and just rate it on the action alone.
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
Nobody breathed for 40 minutes in the Castillo v corrales first fight...

I agree that this is a great fight , probably has more twists and turns ,
but Hagler v Hearns was massive and im sure many none boxing fans watched and enjoyed the hype and fight.
Thats why historically its THE FIGHT .
But if you are into boxing , then yes there are many great fights out there.

That's what ICB and other younger guys don't understand. You can't really appreciate how great something is when you didn't even exist when it happened. It's like being told the ending of a film before watching it.
It would be the equivalent today of watching Pac-Floyd having a mental three round tear-up. Everyone would be totally shocked, which would make it totally unforgettable.

I really don't know, it just gets to me. I don't rate this fight all that much.
It insist upon itself
;D
I don't get it
what are your top fights of all time then ?
Well as some people have mentioned, the I might consider as great aren't as high profile as some of the obvious choices. To be totally honest, I've never really thought about my favourite fights (like as a list, or a top 10 or whatever).
Can i get back to you on that? ;D
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
On its own merits it was an incredible fight no question. But I get what ICB is saying, in terms of simply the fight itself I think there have been quite a lot better. But then you can't separate the fight from the event. In terms of the magnitude of the event combined with the action itself it could well be the greatest fight ever. What Fenster said about Pac-Mayweather is quite apt and is exactly what me and my friend have said about it.

PS if you take away who was involved and the magnitude of the event etc (which you shouldn't) then I would say Earl-Katsidis edges it. Just in terms of action.
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
that was my point about it being two superstars at their peak - added a hel of a lot to the event.
I never saw it in full till a couple of years later.
have seen some of fights you list ICB, and appreciate where you coming from but Hagler Hearns had it all and will still be talked about 50 years from now whereas your list of fights will be forgotten.
and you should have put Carl Thompson v Ezra Sellars on there ;)
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
Hagler v Hearns is the best but the closest for me to that has been the first Eric Morales v Barrera and Benn v MClennan.

These are my top 2 aswell. Barrera should have got the nod though. Benn - McClellan was great but not in my top 3!
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
Just feels right that i rewatch it right now before we get to GMT midnight
Hope that both tommy and marv actually realise what today means for those of us who loves this sport so dearly
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
An amazing fight that's in my top 5 of all time. I give Barrera Morales 1 the top spot though as I saw it live.
Maybe if I was 20 years older and watched it live it would be at the top of the tree for me too.
Re: 25 years on and still the greatest fight ever IMO.
ROFL @ Hearns saying Hagler "got a hard head; no wonder he keep his head bald, he got a weapon there."
