Re: What if Margo beats Pac Man?
on paper, pacquiao will be too fast for margarito and should win by comfortable decision. but fights are not fought on paper. they are fought in the middle of the ring between two humans. pacquiao is good but he isn't a machine that can't get hurt by any human. in margarito, he'll be facing a hungry fighter hell bent on trying to recover his damaged reputation. forget about his lack of speed because it did not prevent him from beating the much faster miguel cotto who by the way, i believe, hasn't been the same since margarito beat him. people say mosley KO'd margarito so automatically pacquiao should do the same? wrong answer! first of all, mosley i believe, hits harder than pacquiao. and besides, we don't know how pacquiao's power is going to translate at 154. margarito will probably be weighing in excess of 160 lbs. so i'd be surprised if pacquiao would be able to hurt him. another thing, in the clottey fight, even though clottey threw so few punches, he still managed to mark up pacquiao's face. now imagine margarito going forward, pressuring pacquiao from the get-go and throwing in excess of 1000 for the fight! imagine margarito punishing the body of pacquiao from round one! will pacquiao still be fleet afoot in the late going? will margarito finally catch him with a body shot late or slow him down enough that pacquiao succumbs to margarito's relentless pressure? maybe he can't, maybe he can. that's why we can speculate all we went. we can say pacquiao will have an easy fight but as chris berman always says, "that's why they play the game (fight)".

IF Margarito was to beat Pacquiao I wouldn't be shocked....I mean maybe this is just me but I'm still shocked that the little dude I saw destroy Jorge Eliecer Julio on the Lewis-Tyson undercard has not just beaten but STOPPED Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto. That's all still sinking in for me....from 120 to straight owning people at 147!!! Remember when Diego Corrales who just moved from 135 up to fight Joshua Clottey, well compare that to what Pacquiao did to the guy....I mean just amazing.
HOWEVER I think Margarito is a shot fighter, I think he KNEW about the illegal wraps, I think his confidence was shattered when he was found out, and I think Pac could starch him lik ehe starched Hatton (not implying Hatton had shot confidence or used illegal wraps, but just in terms of shear brutal "put to sleep" KO'd)....I think Margarito is just a beaten man (litterally and figuratively) since the Mosley fight and Pac is so money right now he'll walk right through him.
And mind you I'm no Pacquiao fan...I have just been impressed by his work recently, impressed enough to have my doubts about whether or not he's acheiving this legitimately
Re: What if Margo beats Pac Man?
Margo does look like a shot fighter to me. With that style and the wear and tear on his body through the years, I would give Margo maybe a 20% chance of beat Pacquiao, with illegal wraps it would be close to 50%. So to even this fight they should give Margo illegal handwraps, now that would be interesting.

Considering what a slow starter Margarito is, I don't see this happening. ;)
Re: What if Margo beats Pac Man?
I can see Margo, being the pressure fighter that he is, following Pac around the ring only to keep eating Pac's straight lefts until they take their toll and drop Tony :-\. Or Pac jumping in and out connecting here and there, until the punches start to wear Tony down :-\.
Margo should keep the distance with some jabs and one-two punches, stay away from the ropes, and hope a lucky power punch connects.
Re: What if Margo beats Pac Man?
koppas,
okay, you're right about margarito being a slow starter. and it's very likely he'll fall behind like he did against cotto. but, like cotto, pacquiao could get tired and discouraged that his punches wouldn't hurt margarito. then what? margarito may have alot of weaknesses but he also has alot of advantages as well. for one, he's fought at 154 while pacquiao has yet to. he has a big height and reach advantage. he's relatively fresh (one year suspension) and with a new trainer, he'll learn somethings about defense and how to better utilize his potential bothersome to pacquiao, jab.
we'll see, we can speculate all we want, which is great and fun, but until they do the actually fighting in the ring, anything can happen!

I think he'll be ok with not hurting Margarito. He didn't seem to be bothered about not hurting Clottey. He'll stick to his game and outwork him imo.
Re: What if Margo beats Pac Man?
ono,
agree but, margarito is going to bring it unlike clottey didn't. clottey was only there to survive and still marked up pacquiao pretty bad. margarito has 4-5 times more activity than clottey.
and you're right, the only way margarito wins is by KO. in the clottey fight, pacquiao showed me he was very ordinary defensively and margarito could salivate this!

Cheers ono, that was going to be my argument. He didn't seem discouraged his punches not affecting Clottey, kept throwing them regardless. Plus, Clottey didn't even ATTEMPT to throw any punches. Margarito will and he will get caught. Many times.

I agree Margarito is more dangerous, but like Koppas said, he'll also leave a bigger target for Pacquiao. I can definitely see the argument for Margarito being able to hurt and maybe even stop Pacquaio, but the smart money has to be on Pacquiao to either beat him or points or even stop him late on. If i had any, that's where i'd be putting my money anyway. ;D

ono,
you're right, conventional wisdom would favor pacquiao but in boxing you never know. i still think if margarito is right mentally and physically, he's got a hell of a chance. but right now pacquiao is the "it" fighter, momentum wise so we'll see. should be a great fight!

Agreed. It would be bad for boxing, IMO.

Is work rate a word that applies to a fighter who throws over 1200 punches in a fight?
Because Margarito does that. Please do not mistake Margarito for Lazy-ass Clottey. I think the only fight that comes to mind where speed was killing him was Cotto. But we know how that fight ended....
The same Clottey that was beating Margarito until he broke his hands?.....The speed that killed Margarito that came from Mosley?
