Re: Chavez Jr. pulls out of Wolak fight to challenge Cotto!
Well he does have some great sparring, I bet he has imporved alot since joining Roach. JCC jr is perfect sparring for the Margarito fight for Pac. He must be holding his own in sparring for Roach to go ahead with the fight.

Re: Chavez Jr. pulls out of Wolak fight to challenge Cotto!
This fight is a lot like Foreman fight IMO, it all depends on how much Cotto has left. I think Cotto will be able to handle Jr., but, from what little I have seen, Chavez is massively underrated because of who his father was. His problem is, like always, going to be his defense and he needs to be wary of Cotto's power.
I guarantee that the winner of this faces the loser of Pac - Margarito (Margarito) if the PBF fight can be made and quite possibly the winner if it cannot.
Re: Chavez Jr. pulls out of Wolak fight to challenge Cotto!
If Chavez Jr does win that fight, you gotta give Freddie Roach some major credit. I think he can take Cottos power, Duddy hit him pretty good and hes a middleweight, didnt phaze him but one time.

That's all very well mate but I was talking about the Cotto fight. ;D
Re: Chavez Jr. pulls out of Wolak fight to challenge Cotto!
Interesting matchup for sure. I'm in line with generalbulldog really. Sure on paper it looks like a mismatch, Cotto is by far the more acomplished fighter. But Chavez is younger and bigger and has excellent management and trainers behind him. Roach wouldn't allow him into a fight where he was out of his depth and got battered, they obviously see something.
The way he beat John Duddy was impressive. I'm going with Cotto but I think as the fight draws nearer the odds might tighten up.
Alfonso Gomez was able to beat Jose Luis Castillo and Arturo Gatti after all.

Miguel Cotto has a hell of a lot more left than Castillo and Gatti did when Gomez beat them, both guys were beyond shot, and that's the only way i see Chavez Jr beating Cotto
Re: Chavez Jr. pulls out of Wolak fight to challenge Cotto!
Chavez jr has had 41 fights and is now 24 years of age, that is one long initiation into the world of boxing. He isn't a kid anymore, and if he is to prove he is half the fighter his father was then now is the time to do it. Cotto may no longer be at his best, he has had some wars, but he is still one helluva fighter and Chavez jr will soon know about what a step up in class is all about!

Very true.
Chavez will be paid well for the ass whipping that he will surely receive.
He's a nice kid and not a bad boxer at all, especially considerin no amatuer career, but he's not ready for Miguel Cotto and I don't think he will ever be ready for a guy like Cotto.
Cotto is WORLD CLASS.
Chavez Jr. is not.
cotto is real beat up these days tho, and julio chavez jr is the man

Re: Chavez Jr. pulls out of Wolak fight to challenge Cotto!
Pluses and minuses on both sides:
The only thing that worries me is that Cotto is not a prototypical junior middleweight. His height and reach are ideal for 147, not 154. Also, the age factor is clearly in TCO's ("the coddled one") favor. Plus, TCO's got the size to be a junior middleweight. But, while Cotto's been in some wars, I don't think he's as shot as some people think he is. By far his most physically taxing fight was with Margacheato, but he's shown to have recuperated from that. Plus now he's got Emanuel in his corner, which clearly should have happened several fights ago. Resume? Please... that's not even a basis for comparison. You'd be comparing a future HOF'er with a TCO with a carefully and meticulously crafted record. Heart and warrior mentality? Same thing... no comparison. Would be insulting even to suggest otherwise. Getting Roach in his corner was obviously a shrewd move by TCO's camp. There's no denying he called it correctly before the Cotto-Pac fight. But Cotto isn't getting coached by Joe "WTF" Santiago anymore, either. So all in all, it should be entertaining for awhile. But as someone else well put it several posts ago...
Cotto is WORLD CLASS.
TCO is not.
Advantage, Cotto.

He had no amateur career, I think his trajectory is understandable.

It's just dawned on me why people like his dad had 100+ fights, there wasn't really an amatuer scene back then, so every fight was on your record.

Chavez Jr. is only 24 years old though and he's only just starting to refine his game. It's not like he's 32 and still fighting bums. To me, the number of fights he has had is less important and less indicative of his potential as a fighter than his age and development.
