Buck Smith decided he wanted to fight, had no money, so he started fighting all the time. Getting paid for sparring, he called it. His manager, responding to criticism that Smith was only fighting bums, said that if you won't admit that Buck Smith can fight, then I must be one hell of a manager to keep finding guys he can beat.
He also beat Olympian Robert Wangila, ending his aspirations before David Gonzalez ended Wangila's life. He lost to Brazier, McGirt. By no means a world class fighter he made himself into a credible pro and had a lot more balls and professionalism about his game and the way he conducted his career than a whole roomful of guys that have made a bunch more money.

Decent enough guy and good story fit for a movie reel. The literal have gloves will travel. I remember him on USA a few times and him talking about actually driving to the arena with his opponent, sleeping in the parking lot and fighting multiple times a month. He had countless fights with the same opponents as well as fighting under aliases. He beat the snot outta Brandon croly and got robbed. They called him in as part of an investigation about fighters throwing or fixing fights, managers. I remember that Chavez fight and initially swore he tanked it.

That video was the first I've seen of either and was hilarious. I skipped ahead, but seriously how awful was Laing? At least in that fight. You could see Smith tapping the X button to power up his left hook for like ten seconds before he threw it.

Astonishing record for this Oklahoma boy. He once went 15 rounds with a fit Harold Braizer.
Yeah, he was on tv regular enough during the 90s, like on USA's Tuesday Night Fights.
He's a dude that made a real try of it in his youth, found he wasn't going to be good enough to be a World Champion, so he found a way to still make a living out of Boxing by fighting every week against lower-tier and mid-level fighters. As Sean O'Grady described him once, Buck Smith was like that minor-league homerun hitter who just was lacking that little extra something so he wasn't able to make that jump up to the next level to the major leagues.
He put on a decent 12 rd match with Buddy McGirt when McGirt was still good. Pretty amazing when they announced the records of these guys because they both had fought a lot. Buck Smith knew how to survive and handle himself in there.
Buck Smith said why spar for free during the week when he could just fight a few rds every week and get paid instead? He once fought twice on the same day in different states.
Buck Smith wasn't in the same vein as Reggie Strickland or Peter Buckley who knew their job was to show up, go the distance with young upcoming talent to give them experience, and lose the fight somewhat competitively without getting knocked out. It's not fight-fixing, but it's as close as you can come to it without calling it a fix.
No, Buck Smith preferred to win even if the fights were against lower and mid-level talent.
Boxing is built on fighters like them....

I was gutted when he knocked out Lang but he was a good fighter and made money. I hope he kept it and is living well.
