Buck Smith - Boxer
Buck Smith
Any hardcore fans ever see or hear of this man?
His best win seems to be stopping Kirkland Laing (a resident poster here) lol
Astonishing record for this Oklahoma boy. He once went 15 rounds with a fit Harold Braizer.

I can still remember the Kirkland Laing fight from when I was a kid (young teenager). It was midweek on a show called Sportsnight. Laing was wiping the floor with him then got caught and laid out with a monster shot.
120 KO's is some going.

*nothing really special about him, other than he fought a lot, and not on TV. I remember Chavez sr fighting a guy names Marty Jakobaski , or something like that... he was 96-1 I think, I never heard of him... he got ko'ed, but who didn't when they fought Chavez ,in his prime... Last I heard, damn, what's his name is still fighting...that guy that had his first loss to Tito Trinidad back in the 96 or so, from Mexico... he made Tony Ayala quit on his stool... anyway, that guy has to have over 100 fights..

If James Toney had been busier he could have a record like that too...
I imagine that this guy would have been self managed and always there for any promoter who wanted to fill out his fight card. He had some busy years in there too, no six month preparation for this guy! You'd really only get that kind of record either in the USA, where there is so much boxing available almost every week, but I doubt there's too many fighters anywhere else in the world with that kind of record.

That was bullshit, Laing was fine to go on. Yeah I thought he was properly ironed out. Did well to get upright to be fair.
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

Buck Smith decided he wanted to fight, had no money, so he started fighting all the time. Getting paid for sparring, he called it. His manager, responding to criticism that Smith was only fighting bums, said that if you won't admit that Buck Smith can fight, then I must be one hell of a manager to keep finding guys he can beat.
He also beat Olympian Robert Wangila, ending his aspirations before David Gonzalez ended Wangila's life. He lost to Brazier, McGirt. By no means a world class fighter he made himself into a credible pro and had a lot more balls and professionalism about his game and the way he conducted his career than a whole roomful of guys that have made a bunch more money.

Decent enough guy and good story fit for a movie reel. The literal have gloves will travel. I remember him on USA a few times and him talking about actually driving to the arena with his opponent, sleeping in the parking lot and fighting multiple times a month. He had countless fights with the same opponents as well as fighting under aliases. He beat the snot outta Brandon croly and got robbed. They called him in as part of an investigation about fighters throwing or fixing fights, managers. I remember that Chavez fight and initially swore he tanked it.
Now that you mention it Spicoli, that KO did look fishy as did the whole fight. Smith just danced around Chavez, inexplicably chose to sporadically come inside to fight, threw pitter patt punches and retreated with his hands down. The combo that finished him off did not look that devastating, the first punch landed then the other two missed.
