Well....um....:-\ ;D
Penny and the guys are all Hippies who started Crass as an extension of their work as artists in the fluxist movement and are still based in a commune. A middle class chap, just like Strummer (who went to private school) they never the less understood the problems with implementing anarchy. Punk is really more about an ethos as is being a hippy or crusty, Raver etc. Political movements and musical/artistic movements have always been very closely intertwined and people change, but labels are usually dreamt up by people outside the movements and after the events.
The Clash like the Pistols were always the mainstream rock versions of punk that still retained a jarring originality in an age of heavy AOR and Radio banality. It wasn't just Prog the vomit inducing dirge of Glam had for every one off original trailblazer like Bowie a million Sweets and shit like Paper Lace clogging up the air waves. In many ways Punks were not overtly political in sermonising like many Hippies who took on the folk mantle of carrying on the protest movement but were more direct in confronting things like racism by having been so influenced by Reggae and Dub. It became more obvious with Two Tone but Donn Letts was not the Clashes film maker by accident. I photograph loads of Punk bands now that are in their fifties and though It can get a bit repetitive, It's refreshing that a generation in their twenties are not embarrassed to make up half the audience and play on the same bills with their bands. In fct my mate has his 25 year old son as lead guitarist in his band ;D
Muse ? they are about a million miles away from the idea of a two minute D.I.Y fuck you ethic in which everyone is invited and musicality is resigned to secondary importance with the idea, enthusiasm and realness taking centre stage. Once you admit its all surface and doesn't not really mean anything, then it becomes incredibly real and will never leave your soul. Not sure Muse even have a soul:-\;D

No, Muse have a soul and that is Matt Bellamy's conflict. Every good man can feel dead inside and then in the next breath want to say something that will change the world. Muse have a heart and even their bsides are very good.
Never trust a hippy, never trust a punk. They contribute nothing.
When I think hippy I'm thinking of someone quite at odds with "There is no authority but yourself" ...they were anarchists and in my mind, from my experiences that goes against the whole collectivist ideals of all the flower haired hippies....but perhaps that's my misunderstanding as all I have ever experienced with hippies and with punks is that it's like oil and water mixing.
The song "White Punks on Hope" to me is very ANTI-hippy, very ANTI-SJW, very ANTI-left, and even nihilistic at points....absolutely nothing a hippy would like about that song.
HOWEVER, as artists it's quite possible songs like that were multifaceted and open to various interpretations and perhaps I've gotten it all wrong which is quite possible.
Hippies to me are more navel gazing lazy bastards....punks will riot....you don't see hippies riot.
Sure there were events CALLED "hippy riots" but that was more peaceful protesting busted up by cops cracking skulls. Comparing the 2 are like MLK vs Malcolm X, the hippies just wanted peace MAAAAAAAAAN and the punks wanted destruction, they wanted to tear down society and start over.
Again, based on only my experiences with those two groups
Punk was the hippies kids who realized that peaceful shit didnt get anywhere....its pretty much dead now though. More of a fashion nowadays.
Beanflicker is kick-ass and doesn't need to be accused of fuck-all. Beanflicker for VP. FACT.
@Fenster
What surprises me though is these "revolutionaries" today will often times be seen with communist flags which is ironic as they are in their minds protesting "The Man"! and "authority" but they are doing so by asking for "The Man" to receive MORE authority under the guise of communism.
I don't get an allowance from my parents, that was a joke thread that only you were dumb enough to take seriously.
I work and make a good living. From what I've read here, you and your woman are on the government take, counting on people who work for a living (like myself) to pay taxes so you can survive. And before that, weren't you one of those "professional student" types, going to university in their 30s or 40s?
So sorry, you don't get a say in this matter. If you weren't lucky enough to be born in a 1st world country, you'd be fucked, sir.
