Good point. Another thing. I have never seen Kelly cut in a fight. He seems tough skinned.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
I voted no, but it's a fight I could see going either way. Calzaghe's movement and workrate would probably give Pavlik problems, but then again, Pavlik's right hand would most likely be a danger to Joe all night long.
I'd like to see it...but I'd still like to see Joe and RJJ go at it first, just for the hell of it.

I think closely along your lines. Only difference is i don't see Joe's workrate being a problem with Pavlik. Pav seems to enjoy taking shots to the face ;D
I see Lateral Movement and a southpaw stance giving Pavlik issues. He has somewhat shaky foot movement and it could spell trouble. I am basing my observations on what he has faced so far in opponents. He may actually have an answer for it though and prove me wrong.

The answer Pavlik will have, will be when Joe tries to jump in close, square up and unload his flurries. When he does that, I think Pavlik will just punch through it, he knows Joe doesn't have anything that can hurt him.

YOU were hard pressed to give Reid anything !
Well you oviously dont know anything about boxing then , you fool.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
Pavlik gets schooled or KO'd late. Hopkins wasnt there to be hit, Pavlik will be.
Joe C too good for him.

Calzaghe fights best going backwards. I agree with the other post which states if Calzaghe squares up and starts slapping his in for a rude awakening.
He was going backwards against Lacy most of the time, and when he wasn't he didn't have to chase it and lean too far forward. The right hands JC has problems with are the counters (Hopkins, Reid, Kessler), if you notice Kessler isn't actually able to catch Joe with a significant right hand when coming forward during the fight, only when he forced JC to lead.
If this old version of JC tries to square up with Pavlik he'll get KO 'd IMO, but if he can be patient and make Pavlik miss the right hands while countering he should be able to claim the win. Of course there's also the possibility that Pavlik will adjust his strategy as well.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
Kelly is a fantastic puncher and not a bad boxer.
However, he moves rather slowly and deliberately.
Calzaghe even at 36 is slick and fast. Although I allow Kelly a legitiamte chance at knocking out any fighter, I feel his chances are greatly reduced against Joe Calzaghe.
Pavlik is a fighter perpetually on the assault, relentless in his pursuit.
However, Calzaghe's best moments are produced when on the counter and reacting to his opponents pressure.
When analysing Kelly, one note's him as a texctbook, somewaht plain fighter.
The dressing on his sandwich, is of course the mustard on his punches.
However, ultimately he is a fighter who generally throws long punches with power seeking the big one (relentlessly.)
Calzaghe is a fighter who has spent his career at a higher weight than Kelly, he's accustomed to hard hitters and loves pressure fighters.
The more I c9onsider this match up, the more I see Calzaghe drawing out a UD. Very similar to The Kessler fight.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
We saw Taylor out box Kelly for a few rounds in there rematch and even made Pavlik get fustrated cause he couldnt land.Calzaghe will out box Pavlik for most of the fight and take a UD.Same old story with Joe he will land alot of punches cause Pavlik will come to fight but he will not get a stoppage.

I'd like to see this fight. I voted for Pavlik. Mainly due to age. But it would depend on what weight they fought at for me.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
firstly i will admit im a huge calzaghe fan - hell the first boxing event i went to was "the full monty" in sheffield where he took the title off eubank (ill admit i was there to watch naz but left as a fan of joe) i was there when he beat lacy and kessler too. It just seems that every single opponent joe's had people are lining up to write him off. I honestly don't believe any of the touted fighters (jones jr, tarver, pavlik) are going to beat him - he just is that good. look at the punches he took off kessler and didn't even blink. True hopkins might have knocked hm down - but it didn't seem to bother him that much!

If it happened I'd say 90% chance it's going to be at supermiddle.
I would deinatly go with Joe via UD, we know he's a sucker for a right hand and all but pavlik has nowhere near the IQ of B-Hop or the movement to make Joe jump into those right hands like he did.
B-Hop is just so hard to hit, if you do catch him he is already moving away from the punch or has managed to partially block the shot wich is probably why Joes shots looked so feeble and ineffective.
Wev'e heard it must be about 30 odd times "he slaps, but he slaps hard" I dont think pavlik will just walk through the shots he likes a tear up but he aint superman, you dont just ignore it do you, if you get punched in the face cleanly your gonna feel it.
I think work rate will do it for Joe at the end of this one, hell ship a few big ones but i think he has the chin to stand up to it. B-Hops shot rattled him cos he didn't see it coming......the ones that hurt the most are the ones you dont see coming...I can't see pavlik with that sort of smarts Joe will see every shot,no KO.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
I would have to see a bit more of Pavlik before I can make a desicion like this... He beat Miranda, and JT 2x which most didnt regard him all that high at the end. Kelly personifies all that is good about boxing.(power, chin, personality, excitement, outstanding sportsman)
JC as we know has proven himself to all the critics, especially me FORMALLY one of his biggest. 2nd best supermiddle of all time undefeated and over 10 year reigning champion along with being Lineal and universally recognized Champion of 2 divisions... His plaque and space have already been set aside in Canastota.... Enough said
If Kelly beats him its only because Joe got old and less mobile... But Kelly's Helacious right is his meal ticket and Joe's achilles heal. The question is can Calzaghe keep showing angles so Kelly cant set and sit on his punches.
-
Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
I think Calzaghe: Pavlik is a great matchup. I think Calzaghe, if he can find that Kessler form one more time, can beat Pavlik by a clear UD. But Pavlik will always make it interesting with his workrate and huge right hand.
Nothing not to like in this possible matchup...

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
If kelly lands even a quarter of the shots bernard did, the fight wouldn't last very long. I don't see a way joe could keep from getting hit. Pavlik will walk right through those little bursts of taps that seem to bother and frustrate other fighters. Bernard did as much to not get hit as he did to hit joe. Pavlik wont. I love calzaghe and maybe a couple of years back i'd see it a little different and there are some great arguments as to why joe would win. I just imagine what will go through joe's head after feeling a couple of hard punches from kelly, even the ones that get blocked. Kelly isn't the greatest boxer in the world but he sets up big punches really well which makes up for any lack of actual boxing skill. Just my opinion, a lot of my friends say i'm crazy.

Calzaghe's never walked through anyone's shots, he's a counter puncher.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
you can never say for sure wat would happen in any fight wat u can do is compare.
looking at the two fighters on paper pavlik has the upper edge because of percentages knockout wise, although calzaghe has the experience and in my opinion has had the harder fight in mikkel kessler.
Looking at the fighters in the ring i,ve always said that i think kelly pavlik is a wild uncontrolled version of kessler , but thats what works for him but lets be honest jermain taylor was waiting to be taken he cant keep himself in the centre of the ring he sometimes seems to forget he's inside a boxing ring.
As for joe calzaghe he has had some easy fights and some scrappy fights aginst scrappy fighters but the better the fighter the better joe fights. Joe calzaghe vs jeff lacy in my opinion that was one of the greatest boxing displays in the last couple of decades, maybe jeff lacy wasnt in joe league but he was a good fighter just look at his knockout record pre calzaghe. and again with mikkel kessler i personally think kessler will never lose again and now bernard hopkins great knockdown by him in the first round a won the next two aswell but from then on joe controoled bernard was still walking looking ok with a couple of nright hands but joe was stalking and landing more punches land nice jabs stepping in and out avoiding bernards counters.
I think it would be a matter of hand speed a footwork if joe and kelly met in the ring kelly is a banger but how affective is any fighter standing infront of joe throwing joe would be in and out kelly right hand is affective but joe had tougher i also think on the inside joe will come out on top becuse of his ability to change and shorten up his punche s not adding power just keeping speed and showing to much leather for pavlik to deal with.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
I'm 50/50 on this one...
It's puncher meets the boxer....
Can the puncher land his money shot?
Can the boxer fight well for 12 full rounds?
I can't decide really... :-\

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
If this fight went to the cards Pavlik's face will just look sweaty and Calzaghe's will look like ground beef. Hopkins looked like he was out for a jog. Calzaghe has nothing that hurts Pavlik. Nothing Calfagey can do will hurt Pavlik. Joe knows and will see what Pavlik can do to a opponet come the 7th when Lockett gets mauled in the ring. This Lockett fight will shock me if it goes more than 7 rounds. Im sure Calzaghe will be rings side for this dismantling of a human.I hope he sees it. I hope Pavlik knocks him out in extreme fashion. Like Taylor slump over almost lifeless in the corner. Or Miranda beaten so bad he looked like a new born kitten with both eyes shut. I hope I dont even need to mention what he did to Zertuche. I hope this fight happens around middle of 2009 when Pavlik is ready to move up. I hope its at a good catch wieght 170-172. I think how prone Joe looked agianst the right hands of Hopkins that Pavlik will connct with his own . Pavlik is a real busy fighter 80-120 punches a round. The right will land and it will hurt.
-
Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
If Joe has the choice of a Jones or Pavlik fight he should go for Jones.
Even if he beats Pav people will just say he was unproven just like Kessler even though he was a unified world champ .
Pav can end Joes run but if I were putting money on it I'd have to go with Joe on points . He has the experience and boxing brain to outscore Kelly . Taylor came close last time but Joe works at a higher pace and I think he'd be too good for Kelly if they met now . Maybe in a years time things might change .

yeh 2 b honest taylor could of won that re-match.. it was that close in my eyes...
what makes everyone think that pavlik would KO calzaghe, in my eyes Pavlik is far from an elite fighter... whereas JC is proven..
It looks like JC is gona beat another sitting duck across the pond

JC is fighting the elite that he avoided hiding in great britian for so long. I dont see a 1990's fight between Calzaghe and Hopkins, Jones Jr or Toney. He was to busy fighting nobodies. I want what ever it is you where smoking during that
Taylor Pavlik 2 . Pavlik was landing more punches clean , he was throwing all sorts of punches and puffed out Jermiane's eyes with his jab that he was landed all night. He beat a boxer boxing. Taylor has great power .
Pavlik clearly beat him. The Hopkins Calzaghe fight was allot closer then the Pavlik Taylor fight. Some can argue great points that Hopkins won. He was landing solid punches. He hurt Calzaghe on several occasions and he floored him in the first round. That never happed to Pavlik in the rematch fight. Pavlik almost ended the fight in the first round. He hurt Taylor with a hard right . Watch on the 7th how terrible you think Pavlik is watch him gut this kid from Wales. It will be over before you can sit on the couch.

Coulda woulda shoulda didn't you could also say Reid could of beat Calzaghe, or Hopkins could of beat Calzaghe. As i remember the fight i had it dead even going into 11th round but Pavlik badly hurt Taylor with a body shot that changed the fight around Pavlik won the last 2 rounds based on that damaging body shot and earned himself the victory.
Pavlik showed good boxing skills and underrated defense to hang with Taylor in that rematch. I can't see how you can't call Pavlik an elite fighter when he clearly is. The only real flaw i see in Pavlik is that he sometimes doesn't mix it up and throws jab jab right hand over and over again. But like i said all Reid done was lead with right hands and so did Hopkins yet they still gave Calzaghe tough fights.
-
Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
I agree that Pavlik is underrated by too many people - he's obviously a very effective fighter. He's also one of my favorite fighters, so I can admit a bias. But I can see Calzaghe frustrating Pavlik with movement and speed, which he still has enough of to cause Kelly problems, I think.
Someone else said it - if Joe can keep away from too many clean shots, he'd have a great chance to outscore Pavlik and win a points decision. I think it's an even money fight for me.

He's kinda lazy about bringing his right hand back up after a jab-right sometimes, too. I keep expecting someone to capitalize on that.

Re: Would Kelly Pavlik end Calzaghe's undefeated record if they met?
Joe has the ability to out point Kelly, but I feel Kelly would land some huge shots and TKO Joe. Even though I would love to see Joe go out undefeated, I just like the way Kelly fights and wouldn't doubt his abilities and power.
