Song that was much better the first time: That song by The Neville Brothers "Free my soul I want to hear some rock'n roll" ( I don't know the real name). BUT WHO THE fuck told Uncle Cracker he was even in the same league as those boys. As a rule of thumb: if you suck at singing or have no talent, you shouldn't do well known covers.
It was originally done by Dobie Gray. The lyrics you're thinking of is "Give me the beat boys and free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock'n'roll and drift away..."

High jump:rolleyes: How utterly ridiculous. I'd pay to see that feat attempted. Pole vault would be a riot. And you can't forget thr rings and balance beam for the gymnastics portion of the event:o Balance beam, lmao.

well you knew what song I was talking about.... I always thought it was the Neville brothers....oh well. You agree about that though right?

Damnit all, pole vault is what I meant by high jump. Maybe I can take part in the games, I can't even type the right words.

High jump they would run right underneath the pole, lol.

Oh I have one better than that: Faith Hill redid Janis Joplin's "Take another piece of my heart." When asked why the song was so terrible she said, "I didn't know anyone else had ever sung the song." How are you such a dumb cunt female singer that you hadn't heard the original of that song.. That took her hotness level down like 193 notches.

Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee are two songs I love. Joplin's voice is outstanding on both.

I don't really like Tool anymore, but they did an awesome cover of Zepplin's No Quarter.
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
I saw Tool in concert and I wasnt super impressed. Was by far the wierdest fuckign show I have ever been to: Found a way to switch this to concerts attended:
I guess you can't compete whenever I have seen Gov't Mule, Ronnie Baker Brooks, The Mavericks, Bobby Bare, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Luther Allison, The Kentucky Headhunters, Smoking Popes, David Ball, Creed (not that great), Alan Jackson, Marshall Tucker Band (b-), Steppenwolf (b-), Buddy Guy (completely wasted), Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday, Modest Mouse , Band of Wild Horses, LeeRoy Van Dyke, Alabama, Hank Thompson, Buddy Brewster, Coco Taylor, B.B. King, A Perfect Circle, Richochet, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Jerry Douglass, Allison Kraus, Big Smith, Ted Nugent, and last but certainly not least (I will remember more), the Bottle Rockets.

Junior Brown,
I saw Tool and they fucking sucked. The Smashing Pumpkins also sucked badly. Completely turned me off of both groups. Pantera, Radiohead, Bruce Springsteen, Social Distortion, Flogging Molly, Foo Fighters, and U2 are probably the best I've seen. I would need 2 pages to list all the shows I've seen. Pantera was hands-down the best though. I was on the floor, near the stage, and it was like a 2 1/2 hour brawl.

Here are a few of mine:
Higher Group - RCHP (originally Stevie Wonder)
Superstar - Sonic Youth (originally The Carpenters)
Planet Caravan - Pantera (Black Sabbath)
Where Did You Sleep Last Night/Any other cover from Unplugged - Nirvana (originally Ledbelly)
Cat Scratch Fever - Pantera (originally Ted Nugent)
Anything covered by the Beatles...
Under My Thumb - Social Distortion (originally the Rolling Stones)
OK, thou hath blasphemed. I don't even like Higher Ground, but whoever the hell RCHP is did NOT do a better job of it than Stevie Wonder. I've heard the rocked out version and it sucks. Just because you throw in a couple guitars doesn't make a remake better than the original.
That being said, here are my nominees:
Shout, by Disturbed
Word Up, by Korn (I'd say it's more like a tie, though)
Isn't that Creep song by Radiohead a remake?
Hey Joe, by Jimi Hendrix
Landslide, by Smashing Pumpkins (mainly because I can't stand the original singer's voice)
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Whiskey in the jar - Thin Lizzy
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson

Metallica redid Whiskey in the Jar; loved it personally.
Other than Beautiful People, Tainted Love is the only other song I liked from Manson; good cover.
Korn did real good at making a Another Brick in the Wall cover originally done by the great Pink Floyd.

The Barenaked Ladies' cover of Bruce cockburn's Lovers in a Dangerous Time

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Metallica did the best cover of Seger's Turn the Page. In fact they did a 2 cd collection of covers; all of them great{though CFH will probably dispute that;D}
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
The Metallica version made me aware of the Seager version. I like them both.
Seager did a cover of Lionel Ritchie's "Stuck on You" and they sound exactly the same.

I didn't actually like Metallica's version.
I like the traditional versions though.
Ditto with Manson. Dislike him as a person and his music generally, but I love those two tracks, it's ironic you named them both!
And Korn's version was very good.
Really Ironic you chose all those songs legion!

I spelled it wrong twice, brilliant. I know it's Higher Ground, and it was supposed to be RHCP (Red Hot Chili Peppers), not RCHP, and I do think their version is better than Stevie Wonders. Judging by the comparative airplay both songs get, it seems that most people like the Chili's version better.
I can't stand anything by Disturbed, so I have to disagree there, but Hey Joe is one of the best covers ever. Landslide is great too.
Creep is not a remake as far as I know. Thom Yorke wrote it as a sarcastic response to the theme of much of the "grunge" music that was popular at the time.

i loved Tainted Love and Sweet Dreams by Manson
Creep is NOT a remake.. it is an original from Radiohead..
the worst cover i've heard of late is Godsmack's Good Times Bad Times by Zeppelin.. just an absolute HORRENDOUS rendition of a great song.. Godsmack may be by far one of the worst bands that has ever sent sound waves into my ears..
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
oo i liked Pearl Jam last kiss, that's a cover..
Nirvana's - Man who sold the world was a good Bowie cover also..

No one will ever do it better then MJ.
I like Chris cover it's brilliant but as far as anything from the Thriller album goes those songs go above and beyond anything. Just my opinion...
Which reminds me of what a piece of shit the guys from Fall Out Boy did with their cover of Beat It...
Same goes for Amy Winehouse and whoever the fuck that was next to her singing...

Oh! Oh! someone left the liquor cabinet open and "Tinkerbell" here got a bottle of O'Douls and is now running loose...
I think the O'Douls really hit you hard there cause you Neg. Repped me thinking I was 'FOR' them (Fall Out Boy & Amy) covering MJs music.
When I clearly said "They should ALL be shot 1 by 1"...
Some grab the O'Douls from his hand and lay him down on the couch.
Be sure to lock the medicine cabinet before he goes in there and tries to O.D. with some Flinstones vitamins... :D
Now here's some Neg. Rep. for the misread...

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Yes but Mick you posted those on here the thread title being "What Cover Songs Were Better Than The Original Versions?" and I'm not going to read your fucking novel to get to the part where you say "Nobody does MJ songs better than MJ".....just say WORST COVER EVER before you post it and then you won't get neg repped.
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
I'd take the Dixie Chicks (ughhhhhh) remake of Landslide over the Smashing Pumpkins version.
Billy Corgan's voice in that is too dramatic, then too nasally, then too feminine...doesnt lend itself to the song.
Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" even Dylan said Hendrix made the better version
Fallout boy=death of real music. I hate these guys.
I liked the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" more than the NIN remake
I liked "Higher Ground" cover by RHCP, but I am a huge RHCP fan and can't criticize anything they do. They did "Higher Ground" back when they were still crazy ;D
I thought the 311 cover of "Love Song" was better than the Cure's version. It was less freak-me-out-i-like-to-cut-myselfish and pretty good groove with the guitars replacing some synthesized parts.

;D I love how the Dixie Chicks version is somehow less feminine than Billy Corgan's. I don't like their version at all, but I can't disagree with anything you said about the Corgan version. His voice drives me nuts sometimes with how whiny/nasally and dramatic it gets, just like you say.

Excellent cover. Hendrix had a way of making other musicians songs his own, he was able to present his own unique interpretation of them.

Fall Out Boy suck. They are the worst band in the history of the world. I got that goddamn Dance song stuck in my head a while ago and I almost shot myself. I hate them and I don't know anyone who doesn't feel the same way. I hate all those "punk" (if they're punk then so is Brittney Spears) bands who are in their 20's and 30's and still sing songs about high school girls, not being popular, and how lame their parents are - Goddamn Blink 182 syndrome. Fuck off with that bullshit I say, fuck right off.

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Really interesting thread ...... further to Lyle's rantings I'd like to nominate Alien Ant Farm for their cover of Jackson's 'Smooth criminal'
(I am not technologically advanced enough to have worked out how to embed video, but I'm sure it'll be on YouTube somewhere)
I also liked Guns N Roses cover of McCartney's 'Live and let Die', plus I thought their cover of Dylan's 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' was better than the original.
I'd agree with the posters that liked Hendrix' version of 'All Along the watchtower' more ....... but Dyan's greatest skill was as a fantastic lyricist and songwriter.
Just to twist the thread a bit .... I liked the Rolling Stones' 'Neptune Remix' cover of 'Sympathy for the Devil' more than the original.
