You gotta be kidding me. Penalosa is too smart of a fighter to engage early. he has great defense and stupendous counterpunching. And correct me if I'm wrong, I think he hasn't hit the canvass in his entire career. It's no secret that Juanma probably packs the hardest punch p4p, but fans are overexaggerating and is delusional if they really think Penalosa is going out early.
i'm sure he's been down at least once but the one i remember was a flush kd and he won the fight in the end.
nah man.. believe him.. everything will go black for penalosa..and to all filipino fighters.. all of them are a bunch of bums so they deserve no chance to win anything.that includes pacquiao too.. most especially pacquiao.

Jhonny is my favorite fighter, and he did me proud, but credit where credit is due....................Penalosa caught him.
I favor JuanMa, but I don't really know how he'll handle the distance, and Penalosa will definately take him rounds.
I was there live in Sacramento for that fight. Johnny was fighting scared against Penalosa from the very 1st rd. Although he's winning rounds, I thought he's winning slightly but I thought Penalosa was breaking him down. A lot of fans booing Johnny coz he's backing off the whole fight. I wasn't surprised when Gerrry KO him.

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
Juanma wins clear decision or by late stoppage.
Gerry is very tough so him going the distance wouldn't surprise me.
-
Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
age aint a factor yet for GP he also has a granite chin, couple that with experience.
-
Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
What Juanma Lopez commented is that he recognize that this fight is one of the most important in his career , cause he know that Penalosa had have a great trajectory and would be a great Victory for him to win the fight , though is not just he want Win Penalosa , he really want KO Penalosa , cause nobody did that before and that would be convincing..................;D
To me if Penalosa try to go to the limit , probably with his great experience could reach until the 12 rounds , but i don't think that he could make exchanges punches with Juanma and don't get wrong with Juanma fighting 12 rounds guys , he training for that and more .............

Breaking him down by getting punched in the face and body? He caught Gonzalez fully extended end of.

Johnny was out punching Gerry but he's not hurting Gerry at all. Gerry almost blocked all his punches. I was there live in the floor just 11 deep from the ring.

So what was Gerry doing to break him down? and by the way it's Jhonny not Johnny.

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
"Penaloser" is moving up in weight and the power advantage goes to Lopez, even if Gerry wasn't. Couple that with Lopez's superior boxing ability means that Penalosa will get KO'd like he never has before. Lopez is very, very hungry over here in P.R..

Don't underestimate Penalosa mate, he has fought in power deficits for the greater part of his career. It's his ability to make someone's own power work against him that have kept him so well in the twilight of his career. I still back Lopez to win, but this one's going rounds. Furthermore, a Penalosa win wouldn't shock me. Indeed if JML does take out Penalosa early it will be an amazing feat and he will get full props from me. I hope JML packed a lunch cause he's gonna be out there for a while.

Definitely power goes to JuanMa but superior boxing ability goes to the 36 year old Peñalosa. With 62 pro fights and twenty (yes 20!!) years of boxing, I consider Fearless Peñalosa as a master boxer already. JuanMa was only a 6 year old kid when Gerry started in professional boxing!! ;D
Gerry will find ways to topple the 25 year old and bit raw JuanMa...

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
I've only seen Juanma maybe a total of less then three minutes. Saw his fight with ponce de leon a fight he had on TV and another he had on PPV where it looked like the guy just wanted out after the first punch.
So I can't say much about him other then im pretty sure he hits hard. Penalosa I havent seen any of, or I may have but don't remember. I really don't know who to pick, havent seen a lot of either guy. Anyone have any clips of Penalosa?

Here's some Peñalosa clips from Youtube but video quality is quite poor...
Two fights ago against former WBO bantamweight champ, Thailand's Sor Vorapin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSkLUstgO70
Three fights ago, Peñalosa knocking out the then reigning WBO bantam champion, Jhonny Gonzalez with a body punch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWp3rY0_00k
Hope you enjoy the clips...

Why not put the first 6 rounds and see how Penalosa gets outclassed by Jhonny Gonzalez?

yes, i was a little surprised at jhonny's strategy in following the blueprint of those who beat gerry before. i thought he'd come at penalosa more because he did mixed it up with izzy and got him in trouble several times before getting caught with something big because of overconfidence imo. jhonny was a lot more cautious against penalosa than he was against vasquez.

i'm 100% Puerto Rican and was raised and still live on the island and i know for a damn fact that this is not gonna be an easy fight for Lopez, IMO even though not by much, but Penalosa is the better technical boxer, and he's already gone upand did very well, only losing a controversial decision to Ponce De Leon, and many, myself included thought he won, Lopez definately has the power advantage, but Penalosa has good defensive skills, i'd say that Gonzalez is pretty much even with Lopez or if anything barely a little bit less in power, and Penalosa took his punches just fine, Penalosa CAN beat Lopez, and honestly this fight is about 55/45 for Lopez, if he's not in the best shape of his career which i'm sure he probably is in, he can end up disapointed come fight night, only thing is i heard a comment from Juanma that was a bit worrysome, sounds like he might be put on the undercard of the Cotto fight (which will most likely be against Clottey) at MSG in June, if he's thinking that far ahead might be he's overlooking Penalosa which would be a big mistake.
also read that Lamont Peterson is gonna be on the undercard of the Lopez/Penalosa fight fighting a Willy Blain, so i think i'm gonna be goin to Bayamon to be seeing this one live
-
Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
Penalosa is a good fighter, i actually kinda like the guy, but he is going to get curbstomped and what sucks even more is when he wakes up stumble over to the gym and teach nonito to do the exact opposite.

Good card indeed and I think this is promoted in cooperation with Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions...
Lamont Peterson vs. Willy Blain for the interim WBO light welterweight title as one of the undercards...

Penalosa has skills, no doubt. But I don't think he can pull it off against the younger, bigger, stronger, and hungrier Juanma.

Yes he will be. I'm counting on it. Anything less than a knock out would show Lopez might be a little overrated.

not at all really, Penalosa is more than a game opponent, i think Jhonny would give Lopez all he can handle and possibly beat Lopez, so don't see how Lopez not beating much less not stopping Penalosa would make him overrated

Except for experience Lopez has pretty much everry advatage on his side. It's the case of young taking out old. This fight will like Rafael Marquez-Mark Johnson 2. Or Jorge Arce-Rosendo Alvarez. Lopez not stopping him would show he might not be the fighter people think he is.

That would be too harsh for JuanMa... IMO, you can't label him a bum much more an overrated bum, he's already a champion!!
No one labeled Jhonny Gonzalez an overrated bum when Peñalosa KO'ed him...

Lopez holds the WBO title. It's extremely difficult to call him a champion and keep a straight face. Hell I can't do it.
Gonzalez is a good fighter. But no one was calling him the next great superstar like there doing Lopez. Not only that, but any knowledgeable fan knew Gonzalez was having difficulty making weight for some time. Him being stopped by a body shot was not exactly shocking. Penalosa was at the right place at the right time.

seeing how i don't judge fighters by race, i don't think that has anything to do with it, there is no shame in losing to Penalosa, and it definately doesn't make you overrated

nothing to do with Juanma either, nobody who loses to Penalosa has anything to be ashamed of

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
Lopez made-to-order for Peñalosa?
Although WBO superbantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez is unbeaten and boasts an intimidating record of 24-0, with 22 KOs, challenger Gerry Peñalosa said the other day he’s confident of wresting the crown when they face off at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, on April 25.
Lopez was only five years old when Peñalosa turned pro in 1989 and is making the third defense of the title he took from Daniel Ponce de Leon on a first round knockout last year.
Peñalosa, 36, said Lopez’ come-forward style suits him just fine.
“He’s made-to-order for me,” he noted. “He’s a southpaw and so am I. I think it’s easier for me to fight a southpaw. I won my first title (WBC superflyweight) by beating a southpaw (Hiroshi Kawashima) and Ponce de Leon, also a southpaw, couldn’t hit me. I will be patient against Lopez who’s very inexperienced. I’ll wait for him to get careless. I’ll use a lot of head and lateral movement. The key is stamina.”
Peñalosa is now training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles with Freddie Roach. He reports for workouts at 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. when Manny Pacquiao checks in to train until 3 p.m. Roach takes care of his other fighters, like Bernabe Concepcion who challenges WBO featherweight titlist Steve Luevano on May 2, from 3 to 5 p.m.
“Lopez is a little slow and I’ll exploit that,” continued Peñalosa. “I’ll use my quickness to keep him from landing. He doesn’t have much of a jab because he likes to brawl. My defense will be tight. I’ll adjust during the fight. If Plan A doesn’t work, I’ll go to Plan B. My advantage is experience.”
Peñalosa said he’s not averse to mixing it up.
“I know I’m the challenger,” he said. “This is the fight I’ve been waiting for. I don’t have much time left as I plan to retire at the end of the year. After I beat Lopez, I’ll do one defense or fight a big money bout against either Rafael Marquez or Israel Vazquez.”
What may hold Peñalosa back is lack of activity. Lopez has logged 10 fights the last two years compared to only four for Peñalosa. But Lopez has hardly been tested as his last three fights ended in the first round. Of his 22 wins by stoppage, 10 came in the opening round.
Peñalosa’s most recent outing ended in a 10-round decision over German Meraz last Feb. 21 while Lopez disposed of Sergio Medina last December. After losing in 98 seconds, Medina claimed he took a dive, fearing for his life. But the Argentinian subsequently recanted.
“I watched Lopez being interviewed before he fought Ponce de Leon and I found him cocky,” said Peñalosa. “I’ll try to teach him a lesson. This is a big test for me, considering he’s 25 and I’m 36. But if I can take him to 10 rounds or more, I’ll have a good chance of winning. I like my chances. He might be stronger but if he can’t connect, it won’t matter.”
Peñalosa has never been knocked out. Of his five losses on points, three were by split decision. He’s not only durable but extremely hard to hit.
Only two fighters went the distance with Lopez. One was Mexican Gilberto Bolanos who was knocked out by Rey (Boom Boom) Bautista in six three years ago. The other was equally unheralded Sergio Mendez.
Former WBC secretary-general Rudy Salud said he would be surprised if Lopez knocks out Peñalosa.
“Gerry’s too slick,” said Salud. “Even if he fights Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis, he’ll still be hard to hit because he moves so well. You’ll miss more than often than you’ll connect. Of course, there’s such a thing as a lucky punch but against Gerry, that will come once in a blue moon.”
Salud said Peñalosa uses different tactics to throw off an opponent’s rhythm.
“I’ve seen Gerry bury his head on an opponent’s chest so there’s no way he’ll be hit,” said Salud. “Even as he’s now 36 with 62 fights, he’s not banged up. It won’t be an easy defense for Lopez.”

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa tells JuanMa:"Be ready"
I fear for the FEARLESS. But people shouldn't count him out. Juanma is an excellent fighter. But I don't think he encountered someone technical tactician like Gerry. May the best man win.
