Re: Fighters you suspect have a GLASS JAW 100%
There is no such thing as a bad chin !
what knocks you out is a variety of things !
Posture and Balance for one ! How often do you hear the term 'chinny banger'? It's all bollocks !
fighters sitting down on the punchers with their weight forward getting tagged by a counter punch normally a hook is a classic example !
Fighters with a poor defence who dont distribute their weight on the back foot and dont see the punch coming aresuckers ie front footed bully boys !
Tito, regarded as offensive but took a sustained beating from Hopkins yet didnt go down to the 12th round and yet was hit hurt and floored by the likes of Keven Lueshing early on his fights when well in the ascendancy .
Soon as Tyson started neglecting technique and boxing his way in he got harder and harder , Bruno rocked him with a big right hand early on in their fights and for a good ten seconds had him out on his feet , yet Tyson managed to take a sustained beating from Lewis without trying to get his own offense on well into his 30s.
Eye sight is also a big factor , the common myth of steeling yourself for a punch is absoloute bollocks ! What steels you is when you lessen the force of the punch by moving away or getting onto your toes .
Stregthening your neck muscles wont do fuck all for punch resistance except hurt you more , neck stregthening is for general posture, the arguement about the brain being rocked in the skull and the head whiplashing back is just the most stupid thing ive ever heard
Keeping your hands up and chin down is also the biggest load of horseshit ever , thats the quickest way to fatigue a fighter across the top of the shoulders, neck and back and anyone who teaches it is a total numptie .
If you have a peek aboo style you cant generate anypower and you dont see the punches coming and you cant move you feet if you cant move your hands
Basic principals of velocity ,torque and force . If a trucks hits a wall at 30 mph with 2 tonnes he's gonna sustain more damage that if he's travelling with half a toone.
If you dont want to get his then relax and find some POISE in the ring learn to move away from punches learn to take a small step back whenever you land the jab .

He doesn't have the best jaw for sure but it is overstated to say he's the fraud of the fraud, in the heavyweight, you just can't be champion for a couple of years with a glass jaw as one single punch would always (or almost) make the difference. THat he doesn't have a good one, I do agree, but it is good enough to be champion for a couple of years. Lennox didn't have a good jaw neither, but it wasn't made out from glass, Wlad has only the same problem.

Lewis was KO'd by shots he didn't see coming from BIG fighters... Heavyweights... if 240 pounds hits you on the chin and you don't see it coming then you're going down.
Roy Jones... find me one instance where Jones was heart by anything other than a massive punch right on his chin...
It's a common misconception that Jones was never hit until Tarver managed to transfer 100% of himself into Roy's Chin. He was elusive but he could be hit.
The only other knockdowns he's had are after taking a sustained beating for what?... 9 rounds from Johnson and a flash knock down from another lighty heavy that he bounced back up from unaffected.
All Light Heavyweights (they don't fuck about... these boys can punch).. Ruiz hit Jones flush a few times, he's not a punch but he's a legit heavy weight and Jones started off as a LIGHT MIDDLE WEIGHT.
there are obviously fighters with better chins out there but to say that somebody who started his career as a 154lb fighter who went on to win titles in every weight class upwards from there a GLASS JAW shows that you don't know shit.
Great post Adam.
And as for PBF, he took some good shots off a very game ODLH and came out on top.
Also if he is anything like his father he will have a great punch resistance, see the Leonard fight!

I didn't say Floyd has a glass jaw, I stated that I suspect him, which I always do; He didn't get landed that flush by power punch by oscar but look at the Judah and Hatton's fights, a good jab and a good straight flush sent him reeling, perhaps it is just coincidence but in my own opinion, it is enough to raise suspicions :)

Agree that in general there are many aspects to a knockout, foot placement, balance even where you're hit. Some KO's are not due to being hit on the chin but on the temple whick will cause your legs to turn to jelly.
Also agree it's better to try and ride the punch than set yourself for it, setting yourself is just allowing yourself to be hit , id you ride the punch you are at least moving away from it and not taking the full force.
Have to disagree with some points though, neck training does prevent the whiplash effect of being hit in particular by a solid continuous jab which will repeatedly throw your neck back. it will also build up those muscles that can protect the carotid artery which if your hit on repeatedly can cause blurry vision and dizziness.
Develpoment of the neck muscles and the traps which are part of the back muscles can also help if being hit by a rabbit punch.
if you devlop these muscles which you say is a waste of time , you have the strength to keep your arms up and cover up your chin as most fighters do and will continue to do.Someone like Froch has been lucky to get away with the arms low style and hopefully he will continue to get away with.

Im sure PBF is similar. Take Ali as well for example.
Calm down son, you're not Sugar Ray Leonard

I agree though that assuming a defensive fighter has a weak chin is silly. The fact that Mayweather got caught by the likes of De La Hoya, Corrales, Hatton & Judah at some point shows that he has a chin that can hold up. Any fighter with 30+ fights (a lot at a high level) who has never been down from a punch has to have a good chin.

Well yes, a boxer SHOULD run the hell away from punches, but the way THEY ran their little tails off at the slightest feint or punch, it always seemed to me that they knew they couldn't take too good a shot.
Now ODLH can REALLY take a good shot. So could Larry Holmes, and so could Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali. I would say they were the OPPOSITE of the Glass Jaw crew above.
this just goes to show that you know jackshit about boxing, glass jaw crew to me would be, Amir Khan, Tommy Hearns, Wlad Klitschko, etc.
Jones' losses by KO were more from dropping to light heavy, he really hasn't been hurt after the 3rd fight with Tarver, a fight he could have won, Vargas didn't really have a glass jaw, he took a vicious beating by Trinidad and after 5 knockdowns was finally stopped in the 12th after giving Tito fits, Lewis i always ragged him on having a glass chin, but although it was far from being Iron it was half decent WHEN he came in fully focused, Mayweather has taken flush shots and although has been rocked never has gone down, and recouperates quickly, next we'll hear that Whitaker, Hopkins, and Wright were so defensive cause they can't take a punch
best chins in boxing IMO
Vitali Klitschko
Erik Morales
George Chuvalo
and others
I totally disagree about Lewis,he only lost to fighters he did not take seriously first time out but got payback in the rematch with both fighters. So ok,McCall had a breakdown, but he would have lost if he was at his best, and "the Rock" was exposed in the rematch that he lost. How many heavyweights have beaten every man they have faced? not many.
The best pound for pound fighter in the world right now,Pacquiao, has 3 losses on his record,so when People are still writing Amir Khan off right now,i have to laugh. They both have the best trainer in the world, and where the packman is right now,at the top, that could be Amir in 3 years time. Feel free to disagree??

Alexander Dimitrenko - he hasn't been touched by a big timeor even an average puncher yet
Nicolay Valuev - Taras Bidenko, Monte Barrett, and probably some other guys have hurt this big dude
NOTICE I DIDN'T LIST DAVID HAYE.....YET
Roy Jones Jr. - NOW, but during his prime he could take a shot if he had to.
Enzo Maccarinelli - He just can't take a shot 3 losses 3 KO's
I have doubts about Cris Arreola's chin but I am wondering if it's just due to poor training.
Brunos chin was solid
His KO defeats to witherspoon and bonecrusher were through fatigue not becuaes he couldnt take a punch
The KO punch against Lewis was a masisve swinging hook, his whole body behind it, that caught bruno on the point of the jaw, now that was a punch where anyone would have gone from
and his loses to Tyson he froze, he didnt fight well in either, yep he was KO'ed but he stood still for most of the fight, maybe it was all down to how good tyson was first time? second time it seemed to be brunos mental state
Bruno was the best heavyweight in the history of boxing

Re: Fighters you suspect have a GLASS JAW 100%
Don't really think any of those mentioned have true 'Glass jaws'. Those guys, like them or not, are operating at elite world class level. They would not have got past the journeymen if they had glass jaws.
Best jaws I can think of:
Marvin Hagler
Julio Cesar Chavez
George Chuvalo
Jess Willard
Muhammad Ali
among others who I cant think of right now
Margarito has shown pretty good punch resistance through his career.
The trouble is, that when a fighter just 'goes' ...... their punch resistance seems to just disappear. We've even seen this from great fighters!
I'd like to see the Internet Warriors who are so quick to sit on a computer and call fighters fake, cowards, cheats, glass jaw etc take a couple of shots from a professional fighter to just 'recalibrate' their grading systems. ;D

Oh god yes!! This is exactly how I feel. Just a single shot would be worth it :)
Although if they've done a bit of swimming I think they'd firm the shot easily ;D

Also, why is Chris Eubank not mentioned as a solid chin? Now that really WAS the toughest chin i saw on any boxer. He maybe carried on too long,as he never did recover from the brutal second meeting with Michael Watson, but man, through his showmanship,or confidence/arrogance (call it what you will) he was one tough dude!
Sad though,as both Eubank and Nigel Benn,(Benn V Gerald McCllelan) after almost killing people in the ring, they were never the same fighter afterwards, and it is very understandable why.

Yes - he had his jaw broken during the first Norton fight. Lasted through to the end, but he lost the decision quite fairly.
Joe Frazier got up 6 times afrter George Foreman nearly took his head off in Jamaica.
Jess Willard had his jaw broken in four places, 7 teeth knocked out, two broken ribs, liver and kidney damage and a fractured eye socket in the FIRST ROUND against Jack Dempsey.
Unbelievably, he gutted through, absorbed a horrific beating and was finally pulled out in the third or fourth.
You're right, everybody's human ........ it's how people respond that differentiates the greats from mere mortals!

Re: Fighters you suspect have a GLASS JAW 100%
How the fuck has Vargas even been mentioned in this thread??
If fighters take some big shots then have to run a bit that's clever, they need to clear their heads before getting stuck back in.
Any fighter who goes down from massive shots do not have a glass chin and anyone who gets knocked out from big shots does not have a glass chin. Anyone can be knocked out if caught right.
Lewis had a good chin the 2 times he was knocked out those shots would have sparked anyone.
A glass chin to me means a fighter who goes down from a punch that he should be able to take and isn't particularly hard. If he gets up then sweet try not to get caught again lol

Same fight where people accuse him of loaded gloves right??
I didn't know all the specifics to Willard's injuries, this makes me wonder...
Considering how small Jack was compared to the giant.
I've read Dempsey had his gloves checked before the fight BUT, so did Margarito against Cotto in a MUCH more secure manner.

No, allegedly, he had plaster of paris against against others, but the rumour is that he was holding a coachbolt in his right hand against Willard. Willard swore blind in his autoboigraphy that he felt Dempsey hitting him with the bolt, and claims his corner found it drooped in the corner afterwards.
look at the video, and Jack was 'slapping' sideways!!
