Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
I think Hatton ranks higher because he accomplished more, but Vargas was the better fighter.
Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
Vargas was the far better boxer but Hatton's career was handled better so it appears he was the better ranked fighter.

Ricky Hatton but i felt Fernando Vargas was actually P4P a better fighter, its just his career was rushed and he never quite recovered from the Felix Trinidad fight.
Fernando Vargas showed in his fights with Ike Quartey, Winky Wright, he was elite. Especially in the Ike Quartey fight he is the only fighter, to have ever beaten Ike Quartey convincingly IMO, forgetting Ike Quartey vs Winky Wright because that fight should of never happened, and i thought Fernando Vargas earned a draw against a very good Winky Wright.
He's also the youngest Jr Middleweight champion in history i believe, so he was obviously elite its just a shame he was rushed into a fight with Felix Trinidad. Which he wasn't quite ready for, but mind you i feel he may of stopped Felix Trinidad in the 4th round, had Felix Trinidad not threw a very controversial low blow. That gave him time to recover, but we will never know.
It is a hard one but as you stated Vargas was rushed too fast in his career and it hurt him, if his people had picked his fights a little more cautiously earlier on Fernando would still be around today...
VaRGAS HAD THE BETTER SKILLSET AND HE was the harder hitter IMO....
Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
I can agree with CFH and Master, Hatton did accomplish more, but Vargas fought fighters who were just as dangerous as Floyd and Manny and he hung with them...he damn near beat De la Hoya.
Vargas was the better fighter and because he had better competition around him and he took on all comers he didn't accomplish what Ricky did.
Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
Vargas took better opposition an beat some of them and put up a good fight with he ones he lost to the only good opposition Hatton had he lost to.
Vargas.
Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
Peter Buckely fought some great opposition too, but like Vargas he didn't beat them ;)
How many really good wins did he have? Quartey and ????
All that said, I do think he was more talented than Hatton, just not as well managed ;)
Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
Winky Wright, Javier Castillejo, Raul Marquez, Yory Boy Campas....those guys are a lot better than whoever Ricky beat

You've convinced me. I have to go with Vargas.

None of them are better than Tszyu (but of course he was shot:rolleyes:)
Winky beat him clearly imo
Don't know why I'm arguing I think Vargas was better. I'm just not sure his legacy will be
Re: Who Ranks Higher All Time, Ricky Hatton or Fernando Vargas
Vargas, by quality of opposition.

Not only that but he had very quality fights vs De la Hoya and Trinidad, it's not like he ever got totally smoked by somebody. Tito nearly took him out in the first but he fought back in a very capable manner and won his fair share of rounds in that fight. Sure he was lackluster vs Mosley and Mayorga but at the end of the day it was because like Ricky, Fernando liked to eat a bit and that and his lack of style after he fell in love with his power took it's toll on him.

Agreed 100%. He fought tough, classic fights against sure future HOF'ers. I think he was a bit mismanaged, #1... plus, he also had some tough luck in coming up against some rising young legends.
