I hope you can get out of there and leave her.
Yeah, it's just really frustrating for me. She is fine 99% of the time, but when the bust ups happen they tend to stand out. When things are good, they are very good. But when they are bad, they are very bad. When things have calmed down I try to point out in a matter of fact way that destroying property and hitting someone is no solution to a problem and where I come from this is actual criminal behaviour. But she will just get defensive and say "but you made me". So, I stood there and said "please punch me on the arm and shoulder for 2 minutes non-stop while screaming in my ear?". I obviously didn't. The other day I simply wanted to get out of the house and sink a couple of beers in solitude and if she had let me go out then it would have been the end of it. She could have calmed down and so could I and maybe things would be better in the morning. But to escalate it to the extent that you are hiding all my shoes and ripping up marriage documents? That's just too far and I am not sure if am going to be able to forgive it.
In that previous reply to Superheavyrhun I painted a very negative image of Korea. It is an accurate portrayal as the roads are full of huge spaceshuttle sized cars and sometimes you are having avoid globules of spits, but I shouldn't paint all Koreans in this light. There are a lot of good Koreans out there and they are just as resentful of the negative aspects of their country as I am. In fact I am hopeful that the younger Koreans who have grown up in a more developed nation will continue to improve the place. They want to break free from the confucian chains, but it does take time. But this is a country that changes very fast and I remain hopeful.
In fact one of the things I dislike the most about Korea is the television. They have these really awful game shows with the same participants day in day out. They do stupid challenges and then sit about in a sauna talking about absolutely nothing. The other thing that annoys me are the dramas. In fact I refuse to allow a drama to be watched at regular volume in my house as the shouting is just too much. These programmes are always showing people shouting at one another and I mean really noisy shouting. They get in each other faces and really, really go for it. Perhaps Koreans are watching this stuff and taking it home or perhaps this is how Korea was first and it simply gets mirrored in the drama. Either way it is quite socially acceptable to get in someones face and just shout your lungs out at one another. It is horrible to watch and one of the reasons I refuse to watch Korean television. It just pisses me off. So when faced with that in person, I really just have to get away from it. It is horrible behaviour.

Geez, no wonder you like to drink a lot. I would to living in such an environment.
Maybe it's a sign to come back to the good old UK?;)

I've definitely had too much in the last week. Much more than usual. But as a whole when times are normal I am pretty controlled.
I don't know really. I have my new university job starting in March and I want to get a year or two on my resume whilst trying to get a couple of things published. That would open up more doors. Just coming back home now would be a bit of a waste as TESL is what I do and I don't have the experience or publishing to work at the better universities there yet. For the time being it is going to have to be Korea.
This university provides accomodation, so in the apartment complex there will be other professors living in relatively close proximity. Imagine if one of them lived on the floor below and we were having one of our tussles? I just don't know if I could live with that. Even with neighbors that I don't know I am always worried about making a noise as I get pissed off if they make any noise. It doesn't bear thinking about. I am going to have to give it careful consideration.

Re: I tried to cook myself last night!
You don't have the keys to your house? Your wife sounds crazy but then you kind of do too, banging on the door with a hammer ;D I would seriously try to get home in England or at least try to teach in some less foreign country. Korea just sounds too crazy and weird of an environment.

I've got keys, but you can lock the door from the inside which effectively renders the key useless if someone is already inside. She's generally not crazy, but in a rage she is liable to do crazy things. I had the hammer, but I didn't really use it. I knocked on the door a bit, but made no real impact.
I'm probably going to take on this university position as it sounds reasonable, but I'm in two minds about whether to go with the wife. I would like a little breathing space. There has been too much of the mentalist thing in the last week and it has left me somewhat jaded.

Re: I tried to cook myself last night!
So I have been giving this some thought...
Getting into a fight about cooking eggs is extremely petty... It is similar to a Woody Allen conversation.

Nothing to report really, just a whole lot of ignoring one another and staying in seperate parts of the house. And that is fine with me, I like the peace and quiet.

It is true whether you like it or not, unless you like the DIY which gets boring, you have to kiss and make up.

This story would be much better if there was a tram crash. Sort it out Miles.

Coronation Street = British soap opera. And in the Xmas special it had a tram crash. Maybe I need to check who I'm talking to before making comments like that ;)

Okay, I just didn't want anyone to forget that this is a self-started Miles "roast" thread (pun intended).

I did go on a subway last month and got attacked by an old woman. Maybe not quite the same thing. ;D

Re: I tried to cook myself last night!
The finger itself is deformed. You contrast it with the other finger. One is fully formed whilst the other is deformed. You look at the finger from the front and realise half of the top is missing. It's currently looked like a semidormant volcano, but anyinterference would mean material coming out of the mountain. All around skin is peeling around these volcanoes and leaaving behind ugly charred flesh. Shoulda seen a doctor, might now just stick with what I have and accapt them as battle scares.

Re: I tried to cook myself last night!
It seems I have been cunningly decieved. My wife didn't rip up our marriage documents. They were in a file along with other documents and apparently she just ripped up an old work contract. Anyway we have started talking and it seems we have a tentative truce. If the documents had been ripped up there wouldn't have been a truce as I think that is a step too far. I think hiding my shoes and hitting me is a step too far, but she has said sorry for doing that. I am not a vengeful man, so will let it all slide....until the next time....:p

Re: I tried to cook myself last night!
Mate you need to get in the ask the trainer forum and pick up some counterpunching tips.
One jolting right hand in the gob and your troubles will be over, she'll probably thank you for it ;D

Surely bottling it up for 20 years and going on a rampage would be a better solution?
Seriously though miles (relationship advice from single person.....but one who reads Dear Deirdre every day!), her apologising and just forgetting about it without dealing with the root cause isn't a permanent solution.

I think so too, but the good thing in this instance is that rather than defend what she has done, she has held her hands up and said that she has acted like a dick. Usually you challenge her and she will try to justify it with "but you made me do it", but this time she hasn't. There was no reason to get angry the first time as the file I downloaded was fine and downloading it on the new computer has proven it. And the last time out she knows she should have been a little more patient and just let me have my dinner. There is no way for her to defend herself. "You made me do it, you should have eaten your dinner quicker!" just sounds bizarre, so she knows she can't say that. And how can you defend hiding someones shoes and then locking them out with nowhere to go. She now feels bad about it and so she should.
The good thing is that she didn't lose her mind completely and tear up the marriage documents. Like I say and have said before, that would be unforgiveable and would have been an act of war. I wouldn't sign a peace treaty after that (talking relationships here Bilbo...just using war as a metaphor....not quite actual politics). She knows she is completely in the wrong and I think 'might' have learned something from this.
One thing about this culture that really pisses me off is the belief that it is okay to get in someones face and yell at them whilst punching them on the arm. It is not okay and is part of a larger process of violent forces which are at work. I teach middle school kids and they are incredibly violent with one another. Sure, you can have a rough and tumble in our own countries, but these kids are brutal and this is betwen friends. Violence is ingrained. Corporal punishment has recently been outlawed, but is still widely practiced and goes quite beyond a tap with a stick. The idea that violence is a way of getting what you want permeates the mind from a young age. I think that this all feeds into an adult culture where screaming and punching is seen as a way to get what you want too. And as I have said, you see this all through the television that they show too. You cannot escape it. You even get it in parliament with the politicians getting into brawls. It is quite bizarre. How can you expect anything better from your general population?
You want miles to stay home, then you must scream at him and hit him. He will stay home! Of course, I will do quite the opposite. My wife lost the plot, tried something that her culture quite readily accepts and now realises that the method of control is quite useless. I won't hit back and I won't stay home. Maybe next time she will use the kitchen knife. Something new to keep things interesting! :p

You may not even have a wife.

I used it more to emphasise it being from the wifes perspective. I would use 'I' to reflect my own specific viewpoints. I am not Ricky Hatton...
