The coal industry was in decline thanks to an unwillingness to invest and while there is still plenty of coal in the hills and vales of the country today, Thatcher decided to forget about trying to remain self sufficient and to have the resources to look after ourselves, and instead went for the cheap option and effectively told the British coal mining industry to go fuck itself. Is it a surprise that many people in these dead end areas turn to alcohol and drugs, and then to crime to fund these vices? Guess who you can thank.

Deregulation of the markets and an encouragement of the entrepreneurial spirit that has allowed a few people from humble beginnings to make it big. A good thing, right? Yet for those small number of people who get to join the entitled elite whose families have been rich for centuries, the gap between those who make the leap and the majority who didn't have the lucky break/ great idea/ willingness to be ruthless getting to the top is just getting bigger and bigger. Guess who you can thank.

And the Falklands....they're on the other side of the world FFS. Why spend millions on a ridiculous confrontation with Argentina for a set of islands that should have been released along with the rest of the empire decades previously.

I can't say that Thatcher has affected me personally, except in encouraging me to never trust a Tory. I have an uncle who is a miner, but it is in the social impact that she had on the North, Wales, Scotland, Ireland that really galls me. If I had a magical gun that allowed me to go back and shoot one person in the 20th century....Hitler would not be such an easy choice as it might appear.

I would imagine that the Thatcher module in Liverpool University might be ever so slightly different to the one they teach down in UCL. I'm not poking fun, if that's what you think, it just galls me that she sacrificed vast swathes of the country without apology or regret.

I think Blair and Obama share the trait that the people bought in to the idea that they were something different and that lost the trust of the people. Blair whilst appealing to 'New Labour' was someone who had plenty more in common with thatcher...and let's not get started on his biggest conjob with the war in Iraq.

It makes me laugh when people suggest she fixed a broken Britain. She sold the country and the place is paying the price even today. You privatise everything then everything costs more as you need to make profits and keep shareowners happy. Those adults who voted Thatcher in back then for short term selfish motives are old now and see a society that is obselete and where their children struggle to find decent work. A service based economy is a hoax that right wing nutters tried to spoon feed people on courses at Universities and which in turn was perpetuated by the media. All it means is that you have to work in a supermarket, or a shop, or sell insurance, or pretend to look busy in front of a computer. It is an economy based on little of any real substance. Only the few can find the gateways to advance themselves in such an environment. Property is increasingly beyond reach, wages don't increase in real terms, social advancement is null, utilities cost a fucking fortune, unions are practically dead thus no wage negotiation, unemployment in real terms remains high and is always so as they fudge the books, the little that you get is so that the few can always have more.

A service based economy means that the only way to pretend to grow is to charge a fortune for basic services as you have nothing to give other nations. You import more food, mine less, import all your electronics etc. Unless you have lived overseas you never really understand just how awful the UK is. Thus fixing a washing machine, getting a hair cut or anything posing as a service is really just there to fleece you of the little cash you have. There is no other way to make money. I get my hair cut for 3 pounds, an old washing machine long past its warrantee fixed for free by LG, and can get the bus to Seoul for a fiver. This is how it should be done and damn cheap bills too. It's almost impossible to spend money at times. Thatcher means that none of these things are possible for English people. They cannot export, have no competitiveness and thus rely on rip off services and outrageous utilities.

The UK doesn't grow largely because it is sold. Everyone lives on credit and everything that could be sucked dry has been. Finance? Lovely jubbly! That is Thatcherism. Make them spend more by giving them less and pretend to grow by giving credit. Then of course it all eventually implodes and really a country like the UK is pretty dead. Everyone knows it and the anger against Thatcher is a reflection of that sad realisation. It is all gone. It's an irrelevant place except for poodle dog posturing.

Mining was just one aspect. All the arguments have been inputted. You have simply failed to compute any of them and that is because you are ignorant.

Being a parent also means that you are a basic human being without the means to detach and avoid obvious mistakes in life. Most parents have this issue. You don't see many people like me with 5 children.

Mining was just one aspect. All the arguments have been inputted. You have simply failed to compute any of them and that is because you are ignorant.

Being a parent also means that you are a basic human being without the means to detach and avoid obvious mistakes in life. Most parents have this issue. You don't see many people like me with 5 children.

If I saw a train wreck I would never give birth on railway lines. That is Britain today. You are asking to be cut into pieces. All those people of the 80's, their penalty was what their children inherited. The same will be said 2 generations from now.

You're claiming that myself and others are merely repeating what we've seen elsewhere when that is clearly not the case, when like I stated those of who were around at the time, watched the news, read the papers, got involved in issues and yes actually studied politics which again you throw back at me as if I should be ashamed of it ;D

I'd heard some bad things said about Thatcher here in the States, mainly said by liberals here who didn't like her close association with then President Reagan. I didn't have a clue that she was so loathed by her own countrymen. Now I don't feel so bad about despising Hillary "rodman" Clinton, who may run for U.S. president in 2016 and/or when Comrade Dingle-Barry finishes his 2nd term.

I don't believe most Americans (including me) know much about what goes on with British politics. To be honest, it's confusing, and I don't understand it. I suppose this will make you laugh, I liked Tony Blair and never understood why he seemed so hated. (not that I cared)
As for Maggie T, I always thought her husband was a dope, I can't say I disliked her, but I can understand some of the reasons why Brits wouldn't like her after reading this thread.

I think Blair and Obama share the trait that the people bought in to the idea that they were something different and that lost the trust of the people. Blair whilst appealing to 'New Labour' was someone who had plenty more in common with thatcher...and let's not get started on his biggest conjob with the war in Iraq.

British politics seem far more complicated then what we have here in the States, i'm sure however if you've lived in the UK most of your life, politics are old hat.
As for political and social issues here in the States, I know all about that. Thanks mostly to "liberals", this country has been on a fast track down the toilet the last 25+ years.
