I'd heard some bad things said about Thatcher here in the States, mainly said by liberals here who didn't like her close association with then President Reagan. I didn't have a clue that she was so loathed by her own countrymen. Now I don't feel so bad about despising Hillary "rodman" Clinton, who may run for U.S. president in 2016 and/or when Comrade Dingle-Barry finishes his 2nd term.

About fucking time; the Queen is next, and then the cycle of political and Royal bastards continues. The fact that she was such a long time leader is damning of the British populace at large, but then again it was a case of either that or Labour which was broken. Mind you, in those days Labour was about principles and representing the workers and I respect that. Her policies were the opposite and set in motion the horror that is Britain today. Unaffordable rail networks and utilities, poll tax (which exists today in various forms), mining communities decimated, manufacturing sold down the river on the garbage spiel of globalisation etc. If there was ever anyone who truly hated England, it was Thatcher.

I hope her final moments were filled with incredible pain and suffering, though I doubt there would have been very much mental anguish or regret there.

I got a full scholarship to go to university. If I hadn't got the scholarship I'd be a builder now like my brothers. My year was the last in the country where you got the chance to win full scholarships. If I'd been a year younger I would have been fucked. Guess who it was who scrapped the scholarships programme?

My Uncle Pat worked in the coal mines till Maggie shut them. Except it wasn't Maggie that shut them, it was the fact that we could import Polish coal for half the price and Maggie just decided to stop subsidising the industry.

My Uncle John used to work in the shipyards until Maggie closed them, except it was the fact you could buy the same ship for half the money from Korea and other places.

What she should have done was try and set up some kind of new manufacturing infrastructure but instead Britain became a services/tertiary industry economy. This worked great for me when I came out of university and started work in a deregulated City, but Maggie deregulating the financial industry just means a nice time for the people at the top of that tree and soes nothing for the Uncle Johns and Pats who are too old to get one of the shit McJobs that another 200 people are going for.

Privatising the gas, telecom and trains wasn't too smart either. Now everybody can get robbed at will by the people who own those industries.

My family is a good microcosm of what happened to Britain under Maggie. Worked out great for the minority but everybody else got fucked at the drive-in.

I mean I heard that the mines were running at a loss and so had to be closed but that doesn't justify the bitch taking my milk away from me as a 6 year old and making me share a bottle and two straws with a fat cunt called David Cross

    Rest in hell you slag.

She did not believe in the concept of society but she managed to destroy many working class communities. The privatisation and selling off of British industries is biting us ever since.

I don't believe most Americans (including me) know much about what goes on with British politics. To be honest, it's confusing, and I don't understand it. I suppose this will make you laugh, I liked Tony Blair and never understood why he seemed so hated. (not that I cared)
As for Maggie T, I always thought her husband was a dope, I can't say I disliked her, but I can understand some of the reasons why Brits wouldn't like her after reading this thread.

I think Blair and Obama share the trait that the people bought in to the idea that they were something different and that lost the trust of the people. Blair whilst appealing to 'New Labour' was someone who had plenty more in common with thatcher...and let's not get started on his biggest conjob with the war in Iraq.
It's harder to pass polarized law in the US than over here, just how your system is set up.

British politics seem far more complicated then what we have here in the States, i'm sure however if you've lived in the UK most of your life, politics are old hat.
As for political and social issues here in the States, I know all about that. Thanks mostly to "liberals", this country has been on a fast track down the toilet the last 25+ years.

What policies and politicians do you think are responsible for this fast track down the toilet you speak of?
