There are fighters that base themselves in the states that become fan favourites. If a foreigner goes to fight Terence Crawford in Nebraska, Deontay Wilder in Alabama, Keith Thurman in Florida or Adrien Broner in Ohio etc etc. You hear nothing but - USA! USA! USA!
Ah yes the boxing Mecca's of Nebraska and Alabama :vd: .....Crawford, Wilder, Thurman, and Broner fighting in the state where they were born is a bit foolish to complain about. Those fighters probably personally invite friends and family to come see their bouts...why would they invite someone to boo them or cheer for their opponent? Are you suggesting that these fighters should have no home advantage ever?
-
Re: American fighters are born with a silver spoon in mouth. Home advantage. Fact.
I think Broner would get booed if he fought in his own living room, but let's let Fenster continue to believe that he would have throngs of people chanting "USA... USA... USA!!!!!"
You can't make this stuff up. ;D ;D ;D

Actually, those are all Mexicans shouting USA.
-
Re: American fighters are born with a silver spoon in mouth. Home advantage. Fact.
Who's complaining? Who said Americans shouldn't have home advantage?
America is no different to anywhere else when it comes to supporting your countrymen. In fact, as an outsider, I can confidently say your country is looked at as P4P no.1 for self cheerleading.
Just this year we've had James Degale, Carl Frampton, Jamie McDonnell and Ricky Burns fighting in America. Throughout the bouts the Brits were getting booed and the Americans were chanting USA! USA! USA!
10,000 Americans cheering for Crawford/Wilder in their hometown are 10,000 Americans. Fact.
-
Re: American fighters are born with a silver spoon in mouth. Home advantage. Fact.
Pretty sure I recently heard more boos during a Thurman and Broner fight than a Wrestling style USA USA USA ;D Now if you're at the Barclay center NY or Houston, they boo absolutely everything. I mean come on, last week a British and Japanese fighters going at it not once but twice in Texas ffs and crowds yelling like loons. You don't get any more American than that ;D

Crawford traveled for his shot. Sat through the cheers for Burns in the UK and returned to home State a hero. Any fighter that can bring boxing talk to the corn fields of BF Nebraska has done well for himself.

I agree.
"Usually" being the key word here.
I've seen cases in which this is not true. It's not a big deal, either.
Most if not all countries root for their own.
Let me put it this way. All other things being equal, fans will root for the local fighter...... usually.
I can't recall any American ever saying that they are rooting for a fighter because he is American. International competition is different. Things like the Olympics or world championships Americans do root for their own country. Boxing isn't considered an international competition in that same regard.
For example, I can't imagine that if Floyd were from a different country that he would be beloved regardless of his problems. Here in the US, tons of people hate him. In fact, most want him to lose. Look back at Ali. Tons of Americans hated him. They watched his fights to see him lose. Can you imagine a fighter of that caliber from mexico, Puerto rice, the UK or somewhere wanting their countryman to lose that bad? Maybe there is a case where this is true but someone give me an example of an elite fighter from anywhere in the world that's not the US, that their countrymen hated them and wanted them to lose.
I think it's because the US is so big that we have a lot to choose from. Imagine Puerto Rico hating Trinidad or mexico hating Chavez. It just wouldn't happen.

Well, Trinidad or Chavez (the persons) would never be confused with Floyd. I imagine if we had a scumbag, woman-beating fighter, with no redeeming personal attributes.... we wouldn't cheer for him at all.

Re: American fighters are born with a silver spoon in mouth. Home advantage. Fact.
I said Crawford deserves respect for winning his title in a foreign country in the very first post of this thread.
The claim made was - "Americans don't support Americans just because they are American." Which is palpably not true. I gave four examples of UK fighters, this year alone, that have clearly had the American crowd cheering against them.
Now maybe i'm missing something here?
Do African Americans not consider Irish Americans American? Do Irish Americans not consider Italian Americans American? Do Italian Americans not consider African Americans American?
Either way the rest of the world consider you American. And "Americans" support their own just like everywhere else in the world.

Broner was no longer relevant to my point but ill prove American boxing fans support Broner against a foreigner.

Re: American fighters are born with a silver spoon in mouth. Home advantage. Fact.
This is Broner against Gavin Rees - a Brit. This is in New Jersey so it's not even Broner's hometown.
Who are the crowd going wild for when the Welshman is getting knocked out?

No Lyle. Fans in the U.S. cheer for Broner against any foreigner because he's American. Fenster has proven his point. The reason Mayweather gets booed, even against foreigners, is that there are foreign undercover fans planted in the arena, secretly posing as American fans... so it'll seem like Americans are booing their own. True American fans are denied admission into the fights, and thus cannot cheer for their beloved countryman.

As an American I was pulling for Reese in that fight. Even in the replay you posted I was hoping Broner would lose, damnit

It's not about being American, its about the name. Since he was the bigger name and was at that point thought of as the next Floyd, people cheered for him. Once he showed that he was an idiot and started losing, everyone roots against him.

Broner has American fans Like Tyson Fury has British fans. Not every Brit cheers for the Brit like not every American cheers for the American.
To say "Americans don't support fighters just because they're American" is rubbish. It depends on circumstances and individuals just like anywhere else in the world.

Me (tongue-in-cheek toward you): Fans in the U.S. cheer for Broner against any foreigner because he's American.
You: Nobody ever made that claim.
Me (quoting your earlier statement): If a foreigner goes to fight Terence Crawford in Nebraska, Deontay Wilder in Alabama, Keith Thurman in Florida or Adrien Broner in Ohio etc etc. You hear nothing but - USA! USA! USA!
Do you ever admit defeat and slink off into the sunset?
Or are you the delusional type that claims victory while in the jaws of defeat?
I've already exceeded my patience quota with this particular explanation, by the way.

Forget it, Fenster... it's really not that important.
However, for the record, you had stated earlier that "I've never seen a fight where the American crowd were cheering for the foreigner".
Then you make that statement about Crawford, Wilder, and Broner....... and then you say you never made that claim.
BTW... I'm NOT wrong, but choose not to get into a pointless argument to show you that it's YOU who's wrong.

I fully standby the opinion that Crawford, Wilder and Broner get American support against foreigners because they are American. Once again - this is not a competition it's called a discussion.
I gave evidence to back up what I said.
Where is the contradiction?

Yes, and I reiterated what you said, referring to Broner, who is immensely disliked by the U.S. public... and you said... "Nobody ever made that claim." Well......... yes, YOU did.
That's all.... no big deal.

Re: American fighters are born with a silver spoon in mouth. Home advantage. Fact.
Where you fight has more to do with the best purse options when your a top flight talent.
Whats more important is "who" you fight if your a top flight talent.
Funny how lil Floyd carrys Vegas and Vegas carrys him. Its like Wlad in Germany also two of the boringest shows in boxing history yet the "current" fans buy in as if its great boxing or actually a real fight!

No, not "support". But rather you'll hear nothing but the chants of "USA... USA... USA!!!"
That phrase, in itself, is an unsubstantiated exaggeration.
Granted your clip was from New Jersey... but I couldn't make out any USA chants in there.
I just saw a crowd cheering a knockout like they always tend to do.
Let me know when you get tired.

Okay well I didn't expect anyone to think that was meant in a literal sense. It was just a more colourful way of expressing that Americans do support Americans. (I will provide evidence of USA chants at fights though if you really want it? I know several off the top of my head.)

Crowds cheer knockouts when the crowd favourite is scoring the KO. When the crowd favourite is getting knocked out a shocked hush normally occurs. Broner was getting cheered.
