Re: Jones or Calzaghe at Super Middleweight
Hopkins was already a skilled fighter, and that was also a younger ROy Jones Jr.... even younger than B-Hop. He was also inexperienced so I dont' count that as an excuse, and also Any Toney is far better than Calzaghe even weight drained he would have beaten Calzaghe at super middleweight...
Re: Jones or Calzaghe at Super Middleweight
this is a joke right, no way is joe the best ever super midleweight, he's not even the best super m from britan , i hope he gets his come upence from manfredo

i said it before i'll say it again prime for prime, james toney whoops joe, winky whoops joe, bhop whoops joe, and most def, roy jones jr. whoops joe.................easy
The only reason I even brought the topic up is the fact that after the Lacey win you would have thought Joe could box on water....SOOOO Much paraise....Now it is those same people who I see on the boards criticizing him.....I just find it funny how such a turn around in opinion has taken place....When his win over Lacey was not then or now impressive
.....Other than Power what did Lacey have?
HYPE, AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT JOE. HAS NOW TOO HYPE. ;)
even lacys power was hype just cause he had a kind of tyson look. :P
The majority on this site were supporting Lacy back then. They crawl away dismiss Lacy and reinvent under new forms...
yes alot of people were miles i thought it would be closer aswell but people realize that lacy isnt as good as people made out thats why calzaghe victory doesnt mean much now lacy vs that vitali guy lacy only just scrapped by and vitali is not the elite by any means calzaghe has lived off that win too long and should have been fighting kessler hell even clinton woods would of been good opponent but no he is facing manfredo .. need i say more i am calzaghe fan miles but he has been letting me as fan down lately dont i cant even defend him with his latest choices
He's only had a fight since Lacy, Ice, and yes Manfredo will be crap next. But that is not why Im arguing what I am in this thread. Im judging this on Calzaghe fights from over the years. Skill wise Calzaghe is up there. As simple as. On a theoretical level I think a Calzaghe: Jones fight goes either way.
Im not defending Calzaghes oppositional record since Lacy here.
skill wise i disagree with miles calzaghe has good workrate and good speed but footwork and movement and defense meaning in avoiding punches and even jones speed and power calzaghe really and truthfully doesnt come close to jones in that department this is how i see it
power= jones
speed=jones
chin=calzaghe
footwork= jones
workrate=calzaghe
defense= jones
Yes, Jones Jr did hold advantages and these would have played a part. But a focussed Calzaghe is as good an opponent as Jones Jr would have faced. A weight drained Toney, or a Hopkins who was yet to mature, do not match up to what Calzaghe would bring. Calzaghe may very well lose a decsion but he would steal some rounds in there and depending on how rough he could make it for Jones this would decide the fights closeness.
Weight drained Toney?! Please. Toney got his ass handed to him...end of. He has made a million excuses in the years since...but after having watched that fight many times...it's a simple case of Roy dominating Toney. Roy at 168 was tremendous. I am not one to say a fighter will simply destroy someone...you sometimes just don't know how styles match up and what other variables come into play. BUT, in his prime Roy was a in every way a better athlete and boxer than Joe. A combination of Roy's fall from grace in the past few years and the over hype of Calzaghe after the Lacy fight might lead some to believe this would be an intriguing match up...but it wouldn't.
