Tysonbruno Mayweather Jr is one of my favorite fighters of all time but you forgetting your history here.

Not in the Top 10! Retires while the likes of Cotto, Margarito and again Williams are around? No siree Bob, he is not a top 10 ATG!!!!
He fights and beats 2 out of 3 of these guys in their prime and with his past record i would have him up there? Lots of unfinished business with the pretty boy.
Wimp!!

He could easily be one of the top 10 most talented fighters of all times but his accomplishments just don't measure up to make him one of the 10 greatest.

These are incredibly skilled guys, but I don't believe they were as skilled as Floyd with the exception of possibly SRR. Pep and Pernell are two of my idols, but they relied a lot on reflexes and god given speed. Same with RJJ.

If you're looking at pure boxing skill, offense, defense, footwork, psychology, ring generalship, ect, I don't think any of these guys put it all together like FLoyd Mayweather.

People can knock Floyd for his compedition, or retiring while there are still mega fights out there that he should be taking, but if you look at his in ring ability without bias, I think you'll be hard pressed to find many who were more skilled than Floyd, let alone "lots" as the gentleman I replied to claimed. :cool:

Floyd can, and has, fought in pretty much any position with great success. He could box, stay away and pick guys apart just as easily as he could stand in the pocket and bang away or fight off the ropes. How many guys could do that?

I watch Floyd and the first thing that comes to my is adaptability. I think the big thing that the Ricky Hatton fight reaffirmed is that Floyd has no immediate weaknesses or holes in his game. He is as good of an all round fighter as I've ever seen.

I rank guys ahead of him, like SRR, because of their achievments though.

I said he had to be top 15 perhaps even at best 15 he retired if he is retired unbeaten in 39 fights a 5 weight champ 6 time champ 20 odd world title fights against top notch names and at the time of retirement he was and had been P4P number 1 a couple of year.And to come from super feather to lightmiddle at 5 ft 8 inch is a great achievement.Lets all reflect on his career and place him we all know as fans where he belongs.

I think that Floyd (While he is skilled) has looked better then many think because of opponent choices. I am going to add this to my sig "Floyd has not sought out top competition since 135lbs).

Zab Judah (Lost to Spinks and BALDOMIR)
Baldomir (You can eat a sandwhich between punches)
Gatti (Shot beyone belief)
DLH (A close fight and Oscar was/is FAR from prime)
Hatton (Great fighter but has one speed, gave Floyd some rough moments kept him on the ropes, Ricky was countered by a better boxer)

It is not hard to look GREAT against opponents not at full peak and great. I don't think Floyd is/was as good as he was at LW/SFW. If he was his heart killed it by looking for the easy road whenever possible.

Even if I worded it wrong by saying skilled rather then deserved point is Floyd does not belong in the top 20 simple as that. Just to name your 5.

Even if he doesn't go broke, he'll fight again.

He'll miss the sport and attention and fight again.

He craves attention. How much attention will he really get when he's retired? He's not as famous and popular as he wants to be or likes to think he is.

I don't see his final retirement being some press release, it'll be a press conference where he's in tears talking about how great he is.

One question came to mind after reading this thread:

Is Floyd or Roy Jones Jr. higher in the all time list?

Were RJJ to beat Calzaghe or were Floyd to beat Cotto (I don't believe in his retirement either), I'd say it was clear. Now I am actually not so sure. Roy Jones was damn near unbeatable at MW/SMW, but so was Floyd in a number of weights. I guess I'd still have RJJ higher, as his list of great wins is perhaps slightly longer, but how do you guys feel?

Coincidentally Roy Jones might actually be ranked higher had _he_ chosen to retire early (read: After beating Ruiz).

How anyone can make a case for a fighter to be among the all time greats when his 3 biggest wins are a 35 year old Oscar, a one dimensional and undersized Hatton, and a shot/punching bag in Gatti...is beyond me. There is no arguing that those three fighters are the BIGGEST names on his resume. Sure, he fought some good competition earlier in his career...but in recent years he has handpicked some real average foes. He gets some props for going up in weight to fight Oscar...but that fight cannot be called a career defining fight. I think it's a combination of Floyd not being in a particularly strong era for fighters in his weight classes (this aint no days of Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Leonard) and also him handpicking less than spectacular opponents. It doesn't help that you always get the sense that Floyd fights more for money and publicity rather than personal challenges and a legacy. Sure, no one can question his incredible skill. But that is not enough to be mentioned among the truly all time greats.

Top 30 or so.

If he had cleaned out 147 and stayed undefeated doing it, he'd be up in Top 10.

I wasn't too impressed with the performance against DLH. DLH is bigger and all so that helps in Mayweather's favor, but Floyd was rather underwhelming and disappointing in that fight.

I agree. Those aren't the best fighters he has faced...but those are the three names that have given him the most publicity and hype. As i stated earlier, he fought and beat some good fighters early in his career...but nothing on his resume jumps out for me and says "top 10 greatest fighter of all time." I have in the top 30 or there abouts....but he doesn't come close to top 10.

I'm a fan of him but I'm thinking that ranking him that highly might be a bit of a stretch.

I rank him more for his skill and defense than i do his resume. I am not huge Floyd fan, but i can appreciate that he is a highly skilled fighter. Skill wise he compares favorably with the all time greats.
