mike weaver should have beaten him in 79.
he wasn't quite experienced enough, but he had holmes in trouble.
So what if some guys gave Larry trouble? Who hasn't been given trouble at one point or another? Doug Jones gave Ali trouble in his prime, and who the fuck is Doug Jones? Same with Sir Henry Cooper, and how good was he really? Roland LaStarza gave Rocky Marciano hell in the first fight which was what easily could have been the Rock's only loss, and how many top 10 HW lists do you see Roland ending up on?
Put me down in the "hate" column. His boxing skills notwithstanding, I never saw such a whining, complaining, arrogant, and disrespectful boxer as Larry in those times. His quote about Marciano was totally classless, and his constant whining about racism in boxing (he was about as racist as they come) made me dislike him intensely. Good businessman or not, generous with his hometown or not, Larry's one guy I've NEVER liked. I was glad when Tyson KTFO'ed him.
Thats sort of my point,Mitchell beat(on an MD to be fair) one of the greatest middleweights in boxing history
And then didnt fight for 7 years, and ended up 3-1
Just because Holmes had trouble with an also ran,it doesnt define his career,it just means he got caught off his guard that night.
Hell Ali had trouble with Wepner, though to be honest, alot of that is Ali's own fault for screwing around in the early rounds when he could have just dropped him
You can't compare heavyweights of different eras because of the weight differences. The average heavyweight weighed less in previous eras. Marciano can't even be considered a heavyweight nowadays.
Larry Holmes may well be the greatest heavyweight of all time, but we will never know because he, like most other of the great heavyweights in history, dominated a relatively weak era, that is to say that the heavyweight division seldom produces great fighters within the same period. As for Klitchko, put him in just about any era through history except for the current one and he would not be number 1 imo
My favorite Holmes quote is on Don King...
“That man is the devil, that’s why he combs his hair that way, to cover the horns.”
