Personally I can't help but think he is an absolute asset to the game. When he climbs through those ropes that is one serious dude and is worth paying $$$ to watch{which is saying something} This 143 Cotto thing is f#cked tbh, but isn't it his promoter really who's trying to do this? And if Cotto and his charge take the fight just for the $$$ at a detrimental weight, then maybe they are bad for boxing. I can think of alot worse for boxing than Manny imo.
Very much agreed on all points....
The guy is worth every dollar to see him in action, he goes all out in the ring, he is willing to fight anyone...
As for the catchweights I am not a big fan of them and wish they would not happen but as long as no title is involved and the fights are worth the price of a ticket then why not I guess...
People have to realize that Manny is a 135lb fighter that everyone is coming to him for the bouts he is not seeking them out...
.Why step into the lions den and allow bigger disadvantages?
cuz thats what all the greats in history have done
Who? Who are these greats? Armstrong?, Jones? please inform us...
Who else has gone from 106lbs to fight at 142lbs?
Who else has titles in 5 weight classes at the moment and as many lineial titles? Who has claimed as many ring titles?
even if they have done one of the above who else has done all of the above?
The man has done his job and well he has nothing to prove by fighting under everyone elses terms
Re: Is Manny Pacquiao Bad For Boxing?
He can't prove anymore... the leap up to true Welter would likely be a step to far for him... and he knows it.
So you right... he doesn't want to prove anything... just make some money by fighting the sports biggest names... if they were all at 135-140 then he wouldn't be asking for catchweights or talking about Welterweight.
He's in his twilight and just look to earn money, ala Floyd Mayweather.

This is a serious question because of many boxing fans have called Manny Pacquiao a pussy and coward for wanting to fight Cotto at a catchweight, which would be his first. To be fair I never considered the Oscar fight a catchweight because you can't expect someone to jump 3 weight classes from 135 to fight you when you called him out and it was at the 147 ww limit. So there are endless discussions about the Pacman for or against him in every boxing forum.
So is Manny Pacquiao bad for boxing? Would boxing be better if Manny Pacquiao never picked up the sport?
Discuss.
Of course it wouldn't be better off with out manny Pacquiao, he's a nice guy with a pleasing style who likes to stay active and take big fights and he has achieved a lot. That doesn't mean that his actions can't and won't be scrutinised or criticised though and I get the feeling that this thread is a knee jerk reaction from you to that. Sort of trolling (as has been said) I guess.
Trying to make us stop and appreciate the guy for the brilliant boxer that he is isn't going to stop us from telling a few home truths when it comes to his recent business/negotiation actions I'm afraid... ;)
and yeah... ODLH was at Welterweight... not a catchweight... so he gets credit for beating him... only at Welterweight and not at his normal Light Middle. Same as if he beats Cotto at a catchweight then he just gets credit for beating him at a catchweight... not Welterweight. It really is that simple.
I've always considered you and Bilbo to be the 2 most brilliant posters on this forum.

Agreed. Even Duran step up to fight Leonard, Hearns, and Hagler. If Pac is getting embarrassed by Cotto he can just pull a No Mas.
Re: Is Manny Pacquiao Bad For Boxing?
This is a fun thread to follow lol. Granted I think GB has some dislike for Pac and i wonder if he's trying to incite a riot, but I've seen worse threads. I'm just thankful Xanexboxer isn't here clucking around like a mother hen.
It's got to be better than rehashing the old Wlad/Haye Hate Each Other; Are the Heavyweights in Trouble?; Woe Is Me Hatton Got Pummeled What Now?; and the always entertaining but redundant Mayweather is a Cock threads:lolhaha:
If GB had made a "Margarito is Great for Boxing" thread then I'd of hammered him for being a stooge.

You guys make me laugh!
I'm having a little trouble understanding if your question related to the sport of boxing or more specifically related to this forum. It would appear that the subject of Manny Pacquiao is a very hot topic and ultimately good for this community.
Personally, I think there are two personalities that bring the sport of boxing to the spotlight. Yes, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. The classic matchup of good guy verses bad guy. Hollywood and the WWE figured out long ago that this formula sells. Just my 2 cents.

Laughter is good for the soul and staves off cancer{except in Bilbo's case}:)

After the Pacquiao - Hatton fight, people (and I mean almost everyone) was talking about it on a hockey forum I sometimes post on. That's how popular he is.
Edit: At worst, Pacquiao stimulates discussion amongst hardcore fans (ohhhhhhh, how terrible) and at best he draws in new fans to the sport and increases the profile of boxing in the mainstream sports world.
Pacman is only known to the boxing world and maybe just maybe to some of the casual sports fan. Most people don't know who he is outside of those 2 demographics. He's not oscar De la hoya in terms of widespread appeal or a young 80s Tyson that people knew.
Pacman f-ucked over his mainstream popularity by bailing out on shows like the Tonight Show, Regis - Kelly, Good Morning America, etc. And he almost bailed out on the Boxing Writers Association of America for presenting him fighter of the year. The guy wants money like how he wanted it to be 60-40 in contract talks with Hatton, but sure doesn't understand how to market himself to an wider audience. More exposure=more cash, which is good for him and boxing.
It's only the boxing fans and fans of other combat sports that knows who he is. Most fans of other sports are saying who? The general publics sure doesn't know who he is.
So basically my question is this. If Manny Pacquiao is hardly known outside of the boxing world and he greatly divides the boxing fans, is he good for boxing?
you got pac hate stamped all over you! ahahahahah
if you think pac isnt popular then NIKE was really dumb to take in pac.
Re: Is Manny Pacquiao Bad For Boxing?
I heard he just finished shooting a nike commercial with Kobe Bryant.

Re: Is Manny Pacquiao Bad For Boxing?
Pacquiao bad for boxing?! WTF?! You are out of your mind! What is up with your threads?
"Is Manny Pacquiao Bad For Boxing?"
"Pacquiao's Accomplishments Aren't Really That Great"
"Was Ricky Hatton Weight Drained at 140"
"What Do You Think of Catchweights?"
"Sugar Ray Robinson vs Pacman"
You have definitely labelled yourself the newest Pac hater and starter of threads to just work people up. I can't help but think you and the greatest tool of all time Saddoboxer are of the same class, just on extremely different sides of the argument.
I hope you got a clue on what myself and others have said on this thread about how dumb a question you just asked us all.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm a huge fan of Pacquiao and I can't stand the nuthuggers. But the haters are just as bad.

neither are bad for boxing, Manny is an explosive entertaining fighter, and Mayweather is the pure essence of boxing when it comes to skill and technique, what both do in the ring is amazing in their own right, this thread is stupid
Hell yes! I even mentioned this on another thread. He sounds like, works people up, and uses the same techniques Saddoboxer used to ram their opinions down other people's throats. I wouldn't be surprised is it was him on an alt account just starting trouble with a different persona.
