Yes, a likeable, marketable, exciting, extremely popular fighter with massive mainstream appeal to both hardcore, casual, and less than casual fans is bad for the sport.

After the Pacquiao - Hatton fight, people (and I mean almost everyone) was talking about it on a hockey forum I sometimes post on. That's how popular he is.

Edit: At worst, Pacquiao stimulates discussion amongst hardcore fans (ohhhhhhh, how terrible) and at best he draws in new fans to the sport and increases the profile of boxing in the mainstream sports world.

Pacman is only known to the boxing world and maybe just maybe to some of the casual sports fan. Most people don't know who he is outside of those 2 demographics. He's not oscar De la hoya in terms of widespread appeal or a young 80s Tyson that people knew.

Pacman f-ucked over his mainstream popularity by bailing out on shows like the Tonight Show, Regis - Kelly, Good Morning America, etc. And he almost bailed out on the Boxing Writers Association of America for presenting him fighter of the year. The guy wants money like how he wanted it to be 60-40 in contract talks with Hatton, but sure doesn't understand how to market himself to an wider audience. More exposure=more cash, which is good for him and boxing.

It's only the boxing fans and fans of other combat sports that knows who he is. Most fans of other sports are saying who? The general publics sure doesn't know who he is.



So basically my question is this. If Manny Pacquiao is hardly known outside of the boxing world and he greatly divides the boxing fans, is he good for boxing?

This is a serious question because of many boxing fans have called Manny Pacquiao a pussy and coward for wanting to fight Cotto at a catchweight, which would be his first. To be fair I never considered the Oscar fight a catchweight because you can't expect someone to jump 3 weight classes from 135 to fight you when you called him out and it was at the 147 ww limit. So there are endless discussions about the Pacman for or against him in every boxing forum.

Did you watch ESPN after the Hatton fight, he was all over it unlike any fighter I've seen in a while. He's a global star, or as much one can be in what is a niche sport.

What exactly is the tangible negative result of him supposedly dividing boxing fans? Is there one?

Pac is absolutly horrible for boxing.....he brings stupid paying fans which boxing don't need. Also if everyone in the boxing world doesn't like you, then you can't be champion. Another thing is he can't fight worth a shit, he only beats the guys put in front of him, a real good for boxing athleate would be champ in boxing, mma, and cricket. He's bad cause a fighter is a direct reflection of thier fans, they all hang around pac, advise him and everything on the net they write has to be true and has to be exactly how pac feels. They should strip pac of his belts ban him and let someone like say margarito be champ, now there's a good guy for the sport. All the pac hate is just as silly as the floyd hate. Don't like the guy...then strap on some gloves and beat him otherwise watch the sport be a fan and play your role. None of us know the guy so there is no reason to hate him. Of course it wouldn't be better off with out manny Pacquiao, he's a nice guy with a pleasing style who likes to stay active and take big fights and he has achieved a lot. That doesn't mean that his actions can't and won't be scrutinised or criticised though and I get the feeling that this thread is a knee jerk reaction from you to that. and yeah... ODLH was at Welterweight... not a catchweight... so he gets credit for beating him... only at Welterweight and not at his normal Light Middle. Manny is one of the better things to take this sport by the neck in a very long time.He is very good for boxing but a percentage of his 'fans' bring all the insight & fever of a grade school girl screaming with glee at his very mention.

Always going to be fans and haters of a fighter. I started liking Pac after the Diaz and De La Hoya fights; never disliked him but wasn't pleased JMM lost twice to him; so I'm not really a fanboy.

Personally I can't help but think he is an absolute asset to the game. When he climbs through those ropes that is one serious dude and is worth paying $$$ to watch{which is saying something} This 143 Cotto thing is f#cked tbh, but isn't it his promoter really who's trying to do this? And if Cotto and his charge take the fight just for the $$$ at a detrimental weight, then maybe they are bad for boxing. I can think of alot worse for boxing than Manny imo.
