I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Im a big fan of Joan Guzman and i have always said, at his best he is up there with the top names. But he has wasted his career, which is a shame.
But i just watched the full Ali Funeka vs Joan Guzman fight, and personally i was quite shocked how bad the decision was. Because sometimes just after the fight people overract and call fights a robbery, when infact there close fights that could go either way.
But not this time Ali Funeka done no worse than win by 8 rounds to 4, i think Joan Guzman was doing great in the first 2 rounds. He was getting low and making the taller opponent punch down a miss, which is textbook fighting for the shorter fighter. And he was landing great body shots, and his combinations were flowing nicely, and his countering was spot on.
Then im not quite sure what happened, but Joan Guzman's gameplan just went out of the window. I know Ali Funeka adjusted by doubling up on his jab and ETC.
But i do think that maybe the headbutt, and the bloody nose. Did effect Joan Guzman because after that he stood straight up, looping his punches even wider.
And he just seemed to not know what to do after the 2nd round, but props to Ali Funeka he reminds me a little bit of Maurice Blocker. He is a great little fighter, well not that little he is 6'1.
And the sport has basically kicked him in the teeth, at worse he got a draw against Nate Campbell, and at worse he won 8 rounds to 4 against Joan Guzman. I feel really sorry for Ali Funeka because he is a very good fighter.
And to be honest this is one of the worst robberies, in high profile fight that i've ever seen this decade. And despite me being a Joan Guzman fan, he did indeed get his ass kicked and was outboxed clearly.

Did Funeka LOOK the winner? Yes. Did he actually convincingly dominate these rounds? No.
Unlucky.. but that's boxing. ;)

I'm serious.
Watch the fight in silence (so you're not swayed by the silly over-the-top bias commentary), I guarantee you'll see Funeka MISS most of his punches, you'll still see Funeka as the winner but will also see how Guzman could have easily been awarded 6 rounds. Trust me.
That draw was doable. Fact.
Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Fenster, please tell me your being sarcastic. Because if your not, im gonna have to actually watch the fight and i would hate to witness a genuine robbery :(

Thanks to my kids and or antonio tarver i often watch non ppv fights without the sound....and i have to sorta agree. Judging each round by itself and not looking at guzmans apperance to judge punches landed it was a pretty close scrap. I still had funeka winning though.
Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Jimmy, you need to watch it with the sound down otherwise it's pointless.
Good to see Mar saw it too. I'm not the only one. ;)
Some of the rounds were much closer than people realise due to A) commentator persuasion and B) unwittingly overstating the underdog's work when doing better than expected.
These are common mistakes we all make. Fact.
Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
There are always people who say, "Well there were some close rounds, so it's really not that outrageous." I thought this would be the very rare occasion where this didn't happen. I'm really scratching my head as to how you guys are justifying this decision?! Juan looked totally frustrated, and even when he did land some good body shots, he had too many lapses in activity. Other than that, he threw all looping desperate rights at Ali's head that for all the desperation, had no chance of being meaningful, as he wasn't turning them over. I guess if it was a slap contest it was close...
Besides you all also say you think he won, even with all that rationalizing, so to me me that really equals robbery/horrible judging no matter how much sugar you put on it.

Ohh the merge, gotcha.Ahh Fenster ;D....as equally effective to watching with no Volume is actually watching with your eyes open ;D.If anything, the commentary was swaying Sugar Ray Guzmans way the first two rounds while Funeka was getting that jab rolling.Eventually they could not look past Guzmans lack of answers and his face falling into the likeness of a raw heavily sauced meatloaf seeing him reduced to waving Funeka in and hucking wide errand right hands. Not close, not full of nip and tuck rounds hard to score...just a pants around the ankles-bend and cough robe job on Funeka :fight:

He's suppose to be this, that and everything in between but in the end. He got Humberto Sotto and Jorge Barrios as his best wins. He can pick himself up by dedicating more to his job.
JMM only has Manuel Medina and Derrick Gainer at age 32. Guzman will falter if he doesnt act properly. PBF, Hopkins, Pac all stays in shape in between fights. Guzman should do the same if he wants to still fight at the big stages.

As for Ali Funeka i think he's a solid fighter, but IMO he just doesn't seem to be quite up there with the top fighters. He's like the Joshua Clottey of the Lightweights, he could trouble anyone but i just think over the years your going to be seeing alot of "Ali Funeka just misses out".
yeah, I could remember the time when you were like promoting him here and I thought you were Joan himself.;D
Remember the time when you were passionately telling the people here that he would dominate Pac and that Pac has no chance against him and that Pac is ducking him ( somewhat to that statement, I can't remember all the things you've said about that man). I must admit he seems to have a potential so i will agree that he's a waste of a talent.

Thats crap and you know it, i never ever said he would dominate Manny Pacquiao or that Manny Pacquiao was ducking him. And i rarely talked about Joan Guzman, the only time i spoke about him was when he was brought up as possible opponent for Manny Pacquiao.
Just because my boy didn't look great, theres no need to say all of what you said. Because i clearly never talked about him much, nor did i overrate him quite like what your making out.
I remember saying he would be a very good opponent, for Manny Pacquiao which he would of been at the lower weightclasses. And he clearly is a talented fighter, its just he's wasted too much of his career and clearly the opponent he was fighting.
Was a freak of nature being over 6 foot and a Lightweight, i don't think anyone in boxing today would look good against Ali Funeka. And what makes me laugh Bruce is that people call you a troll on here, and you constantly hype up Manny Pacquiao like your on his payroll. Yet you say im the one that was constantly hyping up Joan Guzman which is total nonsense.
Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Pac-Guaman at 122 would of been the great
Guzman is fighting Funeka well above his best weight
Add in inactivity
Funeka's freakish gifts in height & reach
All spells a bad night for Joan
Who hung tough
At 122 Pac was busting his ass against Sanchez:p
Who knows what might have happen
Between Pac-Guzman at Super-Bantam
