We've got a 4 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Trevor and he's pretty awesome. My girlfriend was so anti Staffy (as a lot of people are) but I knew once we'd got one she'd realise that you shouldn't believe all the media hype. She loves him to bits as he's the most loving dog you could ever wish to meet.
I'm not sure what breed of dog has a similar bad rep Stateside? a Pitbull maybe? A dog's nature is a reflection of it's owner, breed is irrelevant.
Staffordshire Terriers have bad reputations in the states, they get lumped in with the Pit Bulls, Bull Terriers, and American Bulldogs.
I've never met a mean or dangerous "vicious breed" dog. They have bad reputations but it doesn't mean the stereotype isn't called for. Loads of these dogs were bred to be aggressive and some of them just are big and a little too energetic. All of the "vicious breed" dogs I've met have been extremely sweet dogs.
