I know how frustrating the amateurs can be, but you've done the training, we're here on your log.
Its a testament to all the work you've put in.
If you go in knowing she can't dent you and you know that you can dent her, then go in there and give her hell.

Some fine words there Donny, your biggest enemy in boxing can be yourself, don't let this girl beat you before the fight even happens. Good luck with it!

That's it, that's all. You've got a lot of support sourpuss, here and of course all over the place. That speaks volumes. :)

Re: sourpuss's training log
Well, apparently in Canada, rather than teach their boxers to fight on the inside, they spend their time figuring out crafty ways to foul.
She was skilled and quick, didn't hit too hard, about average. She was able to time me well on the outside but by the end of the first round I had her figured out. ....then I listened to my coach....:( He was right, she couldn't fight inside but he wasn't seeing that every time I got close she'd grab my shoulders and push down and away and jump out of range. She was sneaky about it too. If the ref circled around, she'd switch sides she was holding and hit on the other.
The only time the ref called her for pushing was when I stopped and yelled "WTF ref?!" and he did a half hearted 'Oh, don't push' Then she immediately did it again and he never called it. She did it enough times to get points taken and DQ'd and he only called it that one time. I think if I had had a decent ref that was calling her on it she would have had to stop and change her game plan and it would have been a lot more competitive fight.
Everyone said it was close but I think they were just trying to make me feel better.

Re: sourpuss's training log
Thank you everyone for your support. It really means a lot to me.

Re: sourpuss's training log
Am glad you fought it. Of course wish you won it. It wasn't as hopeless as you thought, eh. I don't think anyone is humoring you. You truly did get a very tough draw, I've been doing my homework, and you sound like you held your own.
I've been on here waiting and scouring the news, but they don't really release much info. do they from what I've found. Need to be on the floor really to find anything out, or have a direct link to someone there.
Good job Sourpuss for getting it on. :)
Kickback and relax now, and good luck to your friend who is about to fight.

Don't be disheartened!
If people said it was close, then thats a hundred times better than what you first expected!
I'm damn proud of you, you told us exactly what she achieved.
And you know what, when fighters get that good, they hurt people that are not menat to be in the ring with them, whether or not they have power.
I can't really admonish her style (I do that too,)but it sounds like you learned, it really does.
So jot down the names of the other girls and chase them for exhibitions!
I'll bet Youngblood, Wes and Sharla are all like me, we only wish we could have been there shouting you on!

Re: sourpuss's training log
Well, at the end of the night my coach checked the score cards and this was the score:
#1 14-16
#2 13-14
#3 6-20 (not sure what's up with that one)
So, one and two points. Not too bad I suppose.
She stopped her opponent last night at the beginning of the 2nd round. I watched the other girls in my weight and I could have beat any one of them with no problem. Our bout should be tonight in the finals. But I suppose that's how it goes. It's comforting to know that I'm competitive with "the best" but just for once I'd like it to be at the end of a tournament and not on the first day.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Means a lot. ;D

Hey I've been away and not had time to come online - sorry i missed my chance to wish you luck!
Well done on the 5km run! :)
Also well done with your fight - i know some aspects must have been really frustrating but it looks like you handled it way better than many others would and I think you should be pretty proud of yourself!
I would rep you but i have to spread it () - hope you're not feeling too down about it - you've won fans here at least! :)

Hey sharla!
I just got back from Guatemala today. Wooo Hooo! It was a blast. But I'm glad to be home. I was going nuts not being able to work out. Our gym is closed for another week but I have a race to get ready for. I need to get my butt in gear tomorrow. It's a 6 miler, so not too far. But it's a trail run and the last 300 yards are crossing a waist deep river. Should be interesting. ;D

That run does sound interesting! It would be so fun finishnig with everyone covered in mud! You'll be motivated to do a good time just to be first back to use the showers I think! :)

Re: sourpuss's training log
I was doing a little research online yesterday and this race is starting to sound a lot harder than I originally thought. Oh well, I'm committed now.
It's 7 miles, not six. Which is fine, I'll just run slow if I have to.
I was looking at old results and saw a name I knew. A guy who is a personal trainer and elite runner. He did it in an hour. So I'm thinking 1 hour and 20 minutes.

It's hard to tell with these things isn't it! I mean so much depends on how much you like hills compared to him and well rivers - there's something I haven't ever come across so I wouldn't even know where to begin taking that into consideration!;D
I'm meant to be doing a marathon in September but uni has made it very difficult to train properly this week. I'm telling myself it will be ok if I don't push too hard as well. I'm really 100 % sure I'm mature enough to actually do that though!:-\

Re: sourpuss's training log
Yeah, I know what you mean. If you're a competitive person, it's hard to be sensible about what your limits and abilities are when you're actually out there running or competing. You'll do fine though, you're in great shape.

Well I don't think i'm in the best shape of my life but I'll take the encouragement anyway. :)
Let us know how your river crossing goes - sounds like fun as long as it's no cold where-ever you have to do this race.
Good to see you're back and you didn't leave us too by the way! :)

Re: sourpuss's training log
My coach is out of town so we don't start training again for a few more days.
I'm just focusing on running until the race. Today and tomorrow I'll do 1 hour runs and then probably something light on Monday. I've never run for and hour and a half straight before so this should be interesting. :D
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
Well yesterday I ran for an hour, for the first time ever. It wasn't as ahrd as I thought it was going to be and I could have went farther when I was done. So that's a good sign. But I didn't plan right and I hadn't had any water all morning and then I set out for the run at noon and it was really hot. So I got really dehydrated later in the day and didn't feel too well. Lesson learned.
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
I did a trail run today that I think is pretty close to the actual race course only 2.5 miles shorter. I think I can average a 12 minute mile if I take into account all of the spots where it is too steep to run and obstacles like fences and rivers, etc. Which would put me under an hour and a half. That's my goal anyway. We'll see, the low for the night before is 34° so I'm hoping it's a little warmer than that by 9am when the race starts.
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
Back in the gym tonight. Yay!
I'll ride my bike there (3 miles) and back. We're there for 2 hours and I assume my coach will have us doing a lot of sprints and conditioning stuff this first day back. (the others from my club can't seem to bring themselves to do any conditioning on their own....BOO!)
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
Well I did the race. :D I was aiming for 1 hr and 20 min and I did it in 1 hr and 12 min.
I didn't really know what to expect, so just finishing was a goal.
It was pretty tough, but not as hard as I thought it was going to be.
Here's a (not so brief) synopsis of the race.
The first mile and a half was probably the hardest. It was about 40 degrees out and you could see your breath. I, of course, was the only one in shorts and a t-shirt. Next year I will be sure to wear some light gloves. It was on asphalt as well, which I hate. Even though I started out slow, I immediately got a side stitch. I think that was due to how cold it was.
As soon as the crowd evened out and we all found our pace we all bottle-necked on to a single file trail straight up the side of the mountain. I think this is where I could have went a lot faster if I had been out front. Someone at the front was walking, which was fine, it was too steep to run. But they were walking as if they were on a nature walk, not in a race. We were going at a pace MUCH slower than I would have gone if there were no one in front of me. This lasted about a mile, so that slowed me up considerably. Next year I'll start out at the front and try to build a lead.
The trail leveled off and my side stitch was gone after all the walking. But it wasn't level for long and there was another hill almost a mile long and pretty much straight up. I was able to jog a lot of it and pass quite a few people that were walking.
The last half of the race is a lot of loose, rocky terrain. A lot of it was downhill as well. Which sounds good, but it's killer on your knees and hips and really hard to maintain balance on all the rocks.
The last mile has a lot of little hills, quick switchbacks, fences etc. The last half mile you cross a fence, over railroad tracks and then across the river. THE RIVER WAS ICE FREAKING COLD!!!! My legs were bright pink and completely numb the last little stretch.
All in all it was great fun though! I can't wait to do it again next year. I now know that I need to be a lot more aggressive about passing people, even if it means going off the trail and on slightly more dangerous terrain to get ahead. There were a couple of times where I should have bolted ahead to get around some slower runners and I missed my chance.
The race is a re-enactment of this:

Re: sourpuss's training log
My coach is working out some potential sparring for me with another club. I'm conflicted about it. There are 3 possibilities. Two boys (105 lbs) and one gilr (145 lbs). All three are pretty inexperienced. The boys will be fast, so that's good practice for me as all my opponents are fast. The girl is one of those toughman club "boxers" and he coach said she hasn't a clue what boxing really is. I was thinking it would be good practice against someone who is wild and unpredictible. I suppose that any sparring that is not my old, slow and injured coach that I've been sparring for the last three years would be good.
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
I guess the only way to know what they'll be like to spar is to go and see! Tricky really! One day we'll have to go somewhere there are lots of midgets for a sparring tour! :)
Congrats on the run! That's and awesome time!
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
Thanks Sharla.
We've got a bunch of newbies at the gym in the last couple of months. If they stick around I'll have some potential sparring. As it is right now the sparring is a bit...eh. Just me jabbing and moving around, trying not to run anyone off. Hopefully they'll be up to speed in another month or two.
Tomorrow we're heading over to the other gym....should be interesting. I have a feeling this gal is going to go all out and try to knock me out. I saw her at a restaurant last week and she's one of those real loud mouth, center of attention, thinks she's tough girls, so.....yeah. She's going to come out swinging and trying to show everyone how hot snot she is. :-\ Her coach told us that we'll basically be wasting our time but he'd appreciate if we came out and showed his boxers what hard work and dedication will do for you. Hmmm....
I'll report back on Saturday. lol

Re: sourpuss's training log
Where is everyone?! It's been dead around here.
Well, sparring with the other gym was a waste of time. Other than entertainment value.
I'm a bit worried going in to this next tournament. I've only been able to spar with my coach (who is injured) and he has a style that makes me fight the exact opposite of how I really need to fight. He's nothing like the type of opponents I face. And the rest of the work I get is with newbies who are much bigger and slower than me so I spend a lot of time just moving and jabbing.
Oh well.

I've been lurking around. :p A lot on my plate plus not feeling puter social, so only been stopping in here and there and playing a few arcade games, but also have been reading.
Good luck to you in your tour, and thanks for your words on my training log. :) (I actually like high school a lot, just ran into a few probs when i first got there...mostly sorted now)

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
We were all set to leave for PALs tomorrow morning and my coach got a call that his father in-law is dying and now the trip is off. I'm gutted. I really believed this was my last chance to win a major tournament. I swear I have the worst luck when it comes to boxing. :-\ You really can't make this shit up, the luck I have with these things. I'm beginning to wonder what I did in a past life to have such shit luck.
Competitive running is looking better all the time.

Anyone know any good witch doctors? I need to turn this luck thing around.

Yeah it can suck.
I can be a bit superstitious for a scientist though and at the risk of sounding really corny perhaps this was meant to happen (the tournament cancellation not the death - sorry to hear about that).
Maybe you need a couple of weeks off of competition to get things into gear training wise? I mean sure your efforts are great but you said yourself sparring has been limited lately since you haven't had access to the right people.
Maybe this is your opportunity to perhaps look at more interclub sparring without offending your coach since I'm assuming he'll need to take some time off anyway?
I've just been away in the UK for a month so haven't been online much - I am actually interested in your log though so keep us updated :).
While I met a lot of people who have inspired me in a few different areas of my life. As far as boxing and physical conditioning goes I was really happy and encourage by meeting Scrap and learnt a lot in only a few days - after not learning much at all in my old gym for more than the last year I spent there.
I've decided that my time off of boxing leading up to this trip has being good for me in the long run. Just working out now how to put everything I've learned from everyone into action.
Seriously you have soooo much time to win other big tournaments ahead of you - you'll get your break in one form or another at some stage and you'll do great!
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
Worship Sourpuss,bow at her gate
That is all
And if its who Im pretty sure it is,losing on points in the Championships is no biggie
And judging(again if Im right on who Im talking to) your height and weight schematics dont lend itself to a knockout, work away and work the jab
-
Re: sourpuss's training log
Haha, thanks TM.
Yeah, I'm tall for my weight and I don't give a lot of 8 counts and never had a stoppage. I usually just either keep up or out work my opponents. We'll see how this next one goes.....

One thing to think on,The Mongols against the Russians strung them out and then struck
In boxing make her chase you away using the jab, then step in with a well timed hook, let her momentum bring half of your power to you
