There are few things better than a good homemade pasty. My nan makes great ones, proper massive. I'm fairly confident that they're proper pasties too and not some shite Northern knock off.
Question: has anybody here tried/heard of suet and onion pudding? I always thought it was a just a common British meal but I've got friends who aren't from the area and whenever I've mentioned it in the past I've got a confused look and they've said it sounds disgusting. Are they just being stupid or is it a Northern thing?

Suet puddings have many different fillings, sweet and savory I like onions sounds fine to me,
you can't beat long slow cooked food, for the taste and flavor.:)

My Mrs makes a to die for toad in the hole. With mashed potatoe carrots and onion gravy. Puts hairs on your chest and makes you feel all warm and content inside. Real comfort grub.

Re: Why do British people underestimate the taste of a cheeseburger ???
If you come from London a traditional pasty is called a Jamaican patty. Fantastic. I used to eat one for lunch, almost daily, with my fellow work pals.
-
Re: Why do British people underestimate the taste of a cheeseburger ???
Ah cool, have wondered about that. There's a Caribbean deli that I go to lots, they have really delicious stuffed pastries which upon googling it are indeed Jamaican patty’s:cool: I had no idea if they were even close to what you hear about in the UK, so damn good though.

My aunt made pasties for 3 of her daughters weddings, and made, by her count, 10,000 more to build this: Our Lady of the Rockies
She once got irate with me because I said I liked the product from Joe's Pasty Shop. She preferred to make her own. A good friend of mine once quit speaking to me for the same reason; she prefers Nancy's Pasties.
Butte is known as the "festival City" because, during July, we host the Montana Folk Festival, Evel Knieval Days and the AnRiRa Irish Festival. These are all three international events- at least a few people come from abroad, though we'll see over 100,000 extra people here each July. The guythat runs Park Street Pasties runs a booth through all the events and, I've heard, makes upwards of $50,000 that month. I have never had his pasties- Joe's is closer.

Yup, empanadas are pretty much pasties, but with a more exciting filling.

The irony, you started this thread suggesting that Brits didn't know good cheeseburgers;D
Those things are delicious, way better than any McDonalds trash and nothing like an Empanada. Ya noob.

That's some impressive fundraising. Great effort by everyone involved to raise that much for the statue.
Yeah I imagine small business owners can make a killing when events like that roll into town. We have an International air show that comes to Sunderland once a year for a weekend in late July. I'd guess that the fish and chip shops along the sea front make a good amount that weekend with all the people that come to it.

I used to love a Peter's Pies version of them. Used to work in a gaff that had them delivered weekly. Stick 'em in the microwave, nice and soggy. @Greenbeanz would be horrified. ;D

Tripe is nice. I love liver and onions. British cuisine at its best. Do they eat things like brawn (brains) etc in the States?

I used to feed a dog for a friend/colleague, that ate nothing but tripe from these big plastic bags that needed thawing out, and it was bascially impossible to stop the shit stink getting on your hands and splashing on you. My girlfriend, at the time, once told me I stunk of shit and even though I told her about the dog/tripe she didn't seem to believe me. It was horrific. Bleach couldn't get rid of the stink.

Colleague?
Fucks sake. I hate it when internet illusions are shattered. I always pictured Fenster as a full time gambler with no job, one of his sisters roll ups constantly hanging out of his mouth, old distressed suit with a lary shirt and sunglasses. Popping in and out of bookies and occasionally giving some mobster types the slip down an alley.
You're telling me you're a regular bloke with a job?
Twat.

There's your problem right their. Grab em while they are fresh and warm. Top of the head off like a hard boiled egg, then tuck right in. Num, yum.

Why "num, yum"? Is that some sort of trying to be cute? Because it wasn't. Plenty of people were fucking scalped Beanz, over the years, by lawless, violent people, and some people are very sensitive to that, Beanz. You should tread carefully on this subject of "topping off the head" and I found "num, yum" just completely over the line there. How could you denigrate all those who have wrongfully been scalped or lopped-off or even lobotomized? It is beyond decent. It is deplorable and should be condemned, cut off at the pass, before it gets out of hand. We as a forum cannot tolerate head-lopping-off stories or even innuendos that it could be delicious. You should at the very least said something like "mmm, mmmm" or I could see "yummy", but then 1 syllable expressions of deliciousness could be taken as more dastardly by a chosen few here. Perhaps in retrospect you HAVE done an acceptable job with "num, yum". Yeah, I was wrong. Sorry Beanz. :)

I think its more to do with the time from hook to plate than it is access to salt water, although naturally those in larger water do grow to a much larger size. Personally I enjoy both, with a good trout well prepared on the barbecue difficult to beat!
That's what I said, rhun... freshness. No way a person living in Kansas will ever appreciate the truly magnificent taste of a broiled red snapper, as much as someone on a Caribbean island, with access to seafood restaurants serving up the catches of the day. And size of the fish has little to do with taste, IMO. Personally, when I'm in the mood for a whole snapper, anything from a 3 to a 5-pound fish will do.
Normally as we tend to have better freshwater fish in this area (I know a few poachers who work the local rivers!) those seem to do the business for me, but equally when I was on holiday on the Mexican coast, the fish there were also awesome. And of course, the
ceviche in that part of the world was delectable.
Ahhhhhhh..... ceviche.
Fresh, well-made ceviche is other-wordly.
Damn... just finished eating a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch.

You can't beat a proper pasty.
Gregg's is not a proper pasty, Gregg's is shit. A proper pasty is uneven and rough around the edges.
I love a good burger, but mostly everyone sells cheap, frozen, 10% meat burgers.
I havent had a juicy Lucy in ages actually, its a bad ass burger. Google it if you have never had one. Ive never seen one sold in the UK though.

This is the worry I have about local pasties. They seem to be very symmetrical, like a baseball with a flat side. They used to be much larger and more folded over. And now you can get them with gravy and that is ok because everything is better with gravy. But I think a pasty topped with chili is dodgy.
