Mahmoud Charr vs Anthony Joshua? WBA regular title holder claims talks are under way to replace Jarrell Miller
Mahmoud Charr claims he is in negotiations to replace Jarrell Miller and fight Anthony Joshua in New York on June 1.
American Miller recorded an “adverse finding” in a drugs test ahead of their fight at Madison Square Garden and is likely to be refused a licence to box by the New York State Athletic Commission if his B sample comes back positive.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn and his team are already considering possible replacements with Charr, who holds the WBA regular world title – a belt outranked by Joshua’s WBA ‘Super’ title - claiming he is the front runner.
“Internal negotiations are taking place regarding the fight in June Mahmoud Charr against Anthony Joshua,” Charr wrote on Instagram.
“I am very happy about this task and the challenge. I'm ready to go to fight against Joshua and bring home the victory.
“As the No.1 WBA and reigning world champion, I'm the most worthy opponent for Anthony Joshua. I am the suitable and official challenger. For Joshua's honour, it's important to fight against the No.1 WBA rankings in the world.”
Charr recently announced he was changing his first name from 'Manuel' – his birthname given to him by his parents.
The 34-year-old has 31 wins from 35 professional bouts, losing four times – including to Joshua’s last opponent Alexander Povetkin.
Who else could replace Jarrell Miller?
Luis Ortiz
Perhaps the fighter with the most pedigree on the shortlist, Ortiz gave Deontay Wilder serious problems before eventually succumbing to a knockout defeat to the WBC champion in his only world title fight to date last year.
The 40-year-old won some admirers for that showing in New York that night and has racked up three straight wins since then, beating Christian Hammer by unanimous decision in early March.
The battle-hardened heavyweight would perhaps represent a greater challenge to Joshua’s dominance than original opponent Miller.
Adam Kownacki
The 30-year-old Polish American fought on the undercard of Keith Thurman’s comeback fight in January, dismissing Gerald Washington in the second round in front of the watching Deontay Wilder.
He is ranked fourth by the IBF and has been preparing for a May or June return.

Kubrat Pulev
Pulev was originally scheduled to challenge Joshua in August 2017 only for the Bulgarian to pull out due to a shoulder injury suffered in training.
A victory over Hughie Fury last October made him mandatory challenger for the Briton’s IBF strap once again, registering a knockout win over Bogdan Dinu in his last outing in March.
The 40-year-old caused huge controversy in the aftermath of that victory, grabbing and kissing a female reporter on the lips in a post-match interview.
The California State Athletic Commission have subsequently suspended Pulev – until he can “demonstrate that he will conform to this principle of respect."
Michael Hunter
Little-known American Hunter signed a promotional deal with Joshua’s promoter Matchroom Boxing just a week ago.
The 30-year-old went 12 rounds with the superb Oleksandr Usyk in April 2017 and has since followed in the footsteps of the Ukrainian by moving up from cruiserweight to heavyweight.
Following news of Miller’s failed drugs test, the 2012 Olympian had a simple message in response to the speculation linking him with the Joshua fight. “Call me, Eddie.”

Well if ever there was a guy who could use the tainted meat crutch I'd have to its Miller.

Feel sorry for AJ with the April and now potentially June date being cancelled.

Think Hearn an company may have showed their hand chasing Wilder like that, not like they can come with less. Have to have a respectable U.S heavy for AJ debut and some of the names are terrible. But I bet Ortiz would jump at it. Hunter just signed with Match room and is training for spot on Usyk card.

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Blah. How is a guy who comes in 300+ lbs and seemingly heavier every time going to test positive for something like this? Id been less critical of him than many for his weight as he has seemed to carry it and still be in fighting shape, maybe now we know why:( This shit happens way too often nowadays. Sucks for AJ, really hard to ask anyone good to take the fight on very short notice, unless they just throw enough money at them where they are willing to lose, which also sucks. Of the names available, Hunter or Ortiz would be about the only guys worthy of salvaging this imo. Usyk may be the best case, but hes not going to be a late replacement against AJ his first pro HW fight, especially having the same promoter.

Ortiz would be a dream matchup. Polish KO monster “I’m a be a Daddy!” would be a strong second choice as well. Fat boy has real power and aggression. He’s good.
-
Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Ortiz would be a great fight if it could actually happen. It would be too big of a risk for AJ though. I can’t imagine he takes that fight.

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Pulev with slut Suche drama show would be interesting. :lickish::lickish:

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Sad times. Joshua left in the lurch because of a drug cheat, desperate for an opponent. The first two names on everyone's lips, Dillian Whyte and Luis Ortiz. Both cheats.
-
Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
I’m calling it. Ward is making a comeback at Heavyweight to fight Joshua !
-
Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Everyone knows it should be Ortiz so let’s go ahead and scratch his name off the list. It should have been Ortiz to begin with.

It is beyond parody. Even sadder is the fact that if he fought and demolished either, even at this late notice he would get no credit. Ortiz would be too old and already ruined by Wilder and Wythe would be an also ran domestic re-run with not enough time to prepare.

I'm sure he's currently taking medication for his blood pressure and 5 weeks just isnt enough time to flush it out of his system prepare.

Lets not go too overboard with the sympathy for AJ. He will still be paid multi millions of dollars to fight someone desperate for the cash and have little chance of winning.

For the sake of AJ's image I hope you're wrong.

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
I actually had no idea he was suspended for 9 months for banned substances back in 2014 as a kickboxer but still allowed to box :p.

"Jarrell Miller tests positive for HGH in second failed test"
"Big Baby" is not only fat...... he's an idiot.
That is all.
-
Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
I guess big baby just tested positive for 3 separate illegal substances. How can you be so stupid?
-
Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Whenever you hear about this happening in high profile fights, you have to assume its because the guys have gotten away with it before or have good reason to think the tests are that easy to beat. It has to be one of the two. This was for more money than Miller has ever made by a mile, now more than he ever will make. He had a guarantee for a couple more fights on DAZN for good money even in losing this.
It would be interesting to read something by a person with expertise or inside knowledge of this stuff, as to most, it seems so ridiculous. 3 tests all hot for different things in a span of a week, but from what Ive read, no overlap in the 3? Were they Different tests, or is the half life of these things so short that it would be out of his system that quickly. I have heard that HGH and EPO are like this, and very difficult to catch even with high standards.
At least the idea of Miller taking growth hormones can serve as comic relief in the whole deal. Actually sounds like quite the cocktail he’d been taking here. As I said, given hes always seemed to carry his weight inexplicably well, it adds up this is not a new look:-\

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
3failures should equal three year ban.

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Haven’t been around much this week cos I don’t have much signal / data where I am. But all I want to say is that Miller is the cunt of highest proportions. Fu k him, Wanker.
As for AJ’s next fight, who gives a fuck , he won’t get any credit anyway.
Perhaps Whyte will grow a pair and a brain to go with it and take the challenge of fighting for a World title.

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Talk that Andy Ruiz Jr may be a possibility. All things considered, it's not terrible. They may look like an evolutionary chart for a fitness program in the stare down but honestly give him as good a chance as I gave Miller.

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Ortiz offered the fight turns it down because he thinks he is worth more money. FFS. A chance to grab three belts and fight the number one heavyweight on the planet after repeated doping breaches and getting stopped by a clown like Wilder
:-\
“It’s a no go for June 1,” Ortiz’s management wrote on Instagram.
“Sorry guys we where told to stay as quite as possible and play possum until fight had been made because every-time someone called Luis out it would be a gimmick to promote them self but it still didn’t work.
“We just received news from promoter that it’s a no go and it was all a gimmick and Hearn’s low ball offers will not be accepted and no contract even ever got sent so sorry to all the loyal fans.
“Luis really wanted this title shot.”

Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
The whole thing really is getting tiresome, just chuck AJ in with Charlie Z and have done with it
-
Re: Joshua v Miller - June 1st NYC
Well Hearn can lowball offer whoever because somebody will be willing to take the fight. Then he can just claim that nobody wanted to fight AJ
