Re: Bring back 15 round fights
Tuck I hear where you are coming from, but the people who are organizing the weight loss, in my opinion, most of the time havent got a clue what they are doing. Boxers in most cases just go along with it, and are to brave for their own good. Every fighter I know, who has had an accident in Boxing since 89 in britain, wore plastics in training and struggled doing weight having talked to the living at length. To a man they didnt understand to what extent the risks they were taking at the time. I take your point, common sense isnt common

Boxing is hard on a man whether it's 12 rounds or 15 rounds. I know that they did some study about when a boxer takes the most damage and I know that they said it was in the last three rounds but tell that to the guys who fought Tyson back in the day.
It's all relative to whom your opponent is. IMO the study was put forth and the max rounds changed to get all of the activists to back off.
I agree that activists spent too much time bugging us about shit. And if they did a study today they would say the same thing, the last three rounds. So do we drop title fights to nine rounds?
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
I am against it....Truly....Say what you's want but I believe in the safety of the fighters that is why they nbwent to 12 in the first place
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
I believe in the safety of fighters too. I just don't see much evidence that reducing title fights from 15 to 12 made a big difference. There is a certain logic to it all, but precious little supporting evidence. Personally I think it was more of a knee jerk reaction.
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
It's three more rounds, refs are much quicker to stop fights these days so why not? 15 rounds is perfect for modern day boxing if you ask me, too many fights end with both guys still having enough in the tank to go at it for another three.
Just think about all the best fights you ever saw that went the distance, you wanted more everytime.
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
Have never really been in favor of this return.Concerning the added rounds and risks,I think fighters would adjust & change pace according to given rounds.I have always wondered about the time line for the networks also...takes a full hour to air 15 rounders meaning no more 4 round over hyped prospect blow out fights :o;D
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
15 Absolute Nonsense... not in the fighters best interest
I am intrigued by the idea of 10 rounders whihc would be in my opinion beneficial to boxing as they would shorten down the feeling out period and also increase career longevity
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
About Rehydration of fluid around the brain the answer is simple weigh them the morning of (for cancellations sakes) and give them 5 lbs wiggle room that would force everyone to fight at close to their natural weight
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
Taking the fights down to 12 rounds is a safety move. It is a must. Humans are only evolving into bigger, stronger, and faster athletes. What athletes can do now is much more deadlier. With 15 rounds you would surely see many more deaths and other tragedies. Marciano was an 187 pound heavyweight. Now we have 6'7" 260 pound heavyweights on the regular. 15 rounds of guys that size would be much more disastrous. I know fans like to see only their perspective and want blood at whatever cost but boxing is still a sport. We can not allow it to be savagery. Ward/Gatti for 15 rounds? Thats 45 minutes of getting punched. That'd be like pushing MMA title fights to 9 five minute rounds. Boxing once was an ignorant sport. It used to be bareknuckle, used to have eternal rounds, used to not end a round until a knockdown occurred, etc. Boxing already holds the longest fights 36 minute fights. 15 rounds would be tunneled vision acknowledgement of the people outside the ring and a total disregard for the safety of the fighters. Nice for the fans but deadlier chances for the human beings in the ring.
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
I don't mind the 12 rounds, but I think change the way the purse works so fighters get more for winning and less for losing.. Then i'd like to say say throw in a sliding scale so you get more for more rounds you win, but the judges already have to much power in a lot of cases and when their ridiculous scoring determins a couple of 100 thousand dollars, I wouldn't like to touch that one with a pole...
But a bonus for win by knockout would be good...
Just add some more haste and fireworks in the the 12 rounds we have and i'd be happy...
Plus thinking of some of the more boring fights of recent memory, they were already 9 rounds to long...

I couldn't agree more!
Its a shame though. I seriously doubt we'll see 15 rounders again...

You make a good argument, I suppose, but none of it is particularly relevant to rounds 13-15 in title fights. It's as much an argument for reducing the length to 10 rounds, or three, or preventing fighters form having more than 20 career fights, or banning the sport altogether.
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
Definately not. The reason some fighters end up with damage after boxing is because of accumulative damage. 15 rounds in a tough fight with a lot of hard punches being landed, can cause permanent damage that can be seen years after retirement, not immediately. Even 12 rounds is a lot, but those 3 more rounds make a difference. Ali and Frazier would probably agree. Its just not necessary to go 15 rounds. Plus, do you really want to see 15 rounds in a heavyweight fight today?

I totally agree that the day before weigh in has been reduced to a joke. Originally it was meant to allow guys to shed a reasonable amount of weight, like one to three pounds and then be able to rehydrate with reasonable safety. The way guys have done it instead is guys who should be fighting at 160 are boiling down to 147 then showing up in the ring weighing 162. Fucking ridiculous.
Re: Bring back 15 round fights
I say yes. 15 rounds used to sort the men from the boys. Also how would we like it if they rduced football (soccer) matches to 75 mins? There would be uproar so why not in boxing?
