Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
I said this on another thread here a while ago but Al Bernstein said he scored the fight for Hagler because he outlanded (and specifically landed more jabs than) Leonard - if Leonard's meant to be the boxer in the fight, how can he be outjabbed?

4/6/87 RAY LEONARD W 12 MARVIN HAGLER – Leonard returned from 3 year layoff to challenge Hagler, making 13th defense of middleweight championship. Ray got to Marvin's head in pre-fight buildup. Leonard, fearing a huge Hagler attack in round 1, instead only saw 16 punches from Hagler, who chose to fight from orthodox stance. Ray outpunched Hagler in rounds 1-4, built up a lead and held on for one of boxing's biggest upsets
is there compubox saying that hagler landed more jabs because i dont believe that hagler didnt land much really neither did leonard but he did make hagler miss quite alot
anyway sweetpea ill watch this fight soon and give you my scorecard liking this thread mate cc

ROUND 1 Leonard
ROUND 2 Even

ROUND 6 Leonard
ROUND 7 Hagler
ROUND 8 Hagler
ROUND 9 Hagler
ROUND 10 Hagler
ROUND 11 Hagler
ROUND 12 Even

To this day this verdict shocks me. Leonard fought scared the whole fight. It was smoke and mirrors all night for Leonard and the judges fell for it.

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
Man I wish I had this fight on the comp. I've seen it a few times but not on my comp. My uncle has it on tape though.
I talked to James Barger, the sports editor for a newspaper out here, he was working in Miami and was ringside for the fight. He said when Hagler landed a shot, it sounded like a gunshot. Whenever Leonard would land it was just a "tsk", and that by the end of the 12 rounds, Leonard fans were CRYING in the crowd.
I scored it almost the same way as VD I'm pretty sure, with the even rounds going to Leonard. Still a Hagler fight.
-
Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
I gave the fight to Leonard when I saw it. Close rounds.
-
Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
Last time I scored it I had it 115-113 for Hagler, a lot closer than what I remembered from watching it live on TV. I remember when they announced SRL as the winner I about fell out of my chair, I couldnt believe they did Hagler that way. Thought it then and still think it, Leonard ran all night, never even tried to plant and throw. Anytime Hagler got close SRL threw some slap shots and ran. I have the fight on my computer but cant stand to watch it. This fight is one of the reason I dont like Leonard.

That is the smartest thing I've ever seen written by Violent D. CC for VD :) 100% correct.
I'll add this, though - Hagler should have been busier. He should have been smart enough to know that judges fall for Leonard's round-stealing jedi mindtricks. He let it be too close.

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
I remember it as though it was over 20 years ago, I was there I did money betting on Hagler. My reason Leonard had been out for some time, my pick was Hagler 8 rds being an Arum show, We got it wrong. I blame Hagler for deciding to box orthadox the first few rds and playing catchup the remainder of the fight crazy brought on by overconfidence no doubt Leonard found his distance Hagler didnt. At the time there was no mention of robbery by the majoraty of the press or fight fraternity

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
Hey guys I must appologize that I do not have round by round scoring, but I do know that I scored it 6, 5, and 1 even for Ray Leonard. Very close fight that really could have gone either way. One thing that is for sure is that there should have been a rematch. And IMO in a rematch Hagler would have ate him up.

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
SRL: 1,2,3,4,6,11 = 115
HAGLER: 5,7,8,9,12 = 114
*Rd. 10 - even (10-10)
I watched rd. 10 like 5 fucken times and it was just too close to call, what I don't get is someone here in a earlier post said rd. 'whatever' was too close to call BUT I still gave it to 'whomever'..... OK if it was that close then you should score it an even rd.....
BIG H, Guess what?
Same scores again..... :o :)

Leonard | 10 | 10 | 9 | 10 | 9 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 114
Hagler 115-114
Real close fight. I think it's one of those fights where either guy could've won and there wouldn't be a huge argument either way. I have no idea how the one judge had it 118-110 for Leonard, but you could score it 7 rounds to 5 for either guy. Hagler made a huge mistake by not attacking the body early and he let Leonard build up a lead.

Not only build up a lead but he let SRL take the last rds. (except for 12) and you and I both know what happens when a certain fighters wins those last few rds. of a close fight.....
We've seen it time after time again and this was no exception.

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Hagler vs. Leonard
April 20, 2002. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (27-0, 20 KO) vs. Jose Luis Castillo (45-4-1, 40 KO) for Castillo's WBC Lightweight Title. This was Mayweather's first fight at 135 after vacating his WBC Super Featherweight title.
Mayweather won by unanimous decision, with the judges scoring the fight 116-111, 115-111, 115-111.
Both fighters had a point deducted for fouls. Castillo in the 8th round and Mayweather in the 10th.

Mayweather| 10 | 10 | 10| 10 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 10 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 113
I have it a draw. Castillo would have retained his title.

Round 01-Mayweather
Round 02-Mayweather
Round 03-Mayweather
Round 04-Mayweather
Round 05-Castillo
Round 06-Castillo
Round 07-Castillo
Round 08-Mayweather
Round 09-Mayweather
Round 10-Castillo
Round 11-Even
Round 12-Mayweather
115-113 Mayweather
Close fight, that I taught Mayweather without controversy. I think the fact that Mayweather had never been in a close fight until this made people think that he actually lost. When in fact, he didn't. .

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Mayweather vs. Castil
I'm DEFINTELY going to post in the JLC-PBF thread,I'll watch it tomorrow morning. I don't think its because Floyd was in a close fight,I think it was because JLC landed more blows, the harder blows, and PBF was not showing generalship(as Lederman pointed out)he was pot shotting and running. He under estimated the monster Castillo. Roger Mayweather disrespected JLC before the fight, saying if someone from the crowd threw in a beer bottle,it would hit JLC(ie thats how wide open he was). Castillo took it to Mayweather and I'lll certainly be posting my card tomorrow morning.

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Mayweather vs. Castil
rd1 mayweather 10-9
rd2 mayweather 10-9
rd3 mayweather 10-9
rd4 mayweather 10-9
rd5 castillo 10-9
rd6 castillo 10-9
rd7 castillo 10-9
rd8 i liked mayweathers work with his jab in this round and with castillo having point deducted 10-8 floyd
rd9 castillo 10-9
rd10 castillo was on his way to winning this round and mayweather had point deducted so 10-8 castillo
rd11 castillo 10-9
rd12 castillo 10-9
112 mayweather 114 castillo
castillo was more agressive i think mayweather won first 4 rounds easy then castillo won next 3 and then from round 9 he pounded mayweathers body and was more aggressive and i liked castillos work and i think mayweather should of lost this fight

Re: Looking back at old controversial fights.... (Updated) Mayweather vs. Castillo I
JLC: 3,5,6,7,10,11 = 114
PBF: 1,2,4,9,12 = 112
Rd. 8 was (9-9) JLC had a point deducted for hitting during a break.
*Rd. 10 was (10-8) PBF had a point deducted for pushing off with his forearm.
I just finished watching it again and it's the same way I've always seen it JLC was the aggressor punishing PBF and working him against the ropes making PBF go back. JLC always looked for the fight and he was the champ. I didn't see PBF do anything that a challenger is suppose to do when fighting for a title you're suppose to come in and take the title. JLC was always the aggressor and IMO landed the harder punches wether to the head or body.

i scored rounds different but we both come out with 114-112 and i agree with you mayweather didnt do enough to take jlc belt and castillo was aggressor and in my eyes he did enough to retain his belt i totally agree with mick on this one

Mayweather 10 10 10 9 10 9 9 9 9 9 10 9 113
ROUND 1, Mayweather's speed was clear and controls the opening round.
ROUND 2, Mayweather still controls this round.
ROUND 3, A little close since first 2 minutes controlled by mayweather but with 30secs left castlillo have some good shots.
ROUND 4, Not much punch landed by both, but 1 solid punch by castillo.
ROUND 5, Castillo's aggresiveness is now evident. But mayweather's counter shot saves this round for him.
ROUND 6, Castillo for being the aggresor. Too much aggresiveness even punching while on hold. ;D
ROUND 7, Castillo dominates this round.
ROUND 8, Castillo still the aggressive one. Landed punches to the body. Deducted 1 point by ref due to punch thrown at break.
ROUND 9, Very close to me, could gone either way. castillo's aggresiveness is a factor. mayweather's defense and dancing (or running) around is impressive.
ROUND 10, Nice counter shots by mayweather. Deducted 1 point by ref. for sticking elbow.
ROUND 11, Mayweather stands toe-to-toe with castillo and landed some good combination and counters. Castillo looks tired.
ROUND 12, Castillo finishes strong.
This fight is a DRAW, a very good fight though.

thanks! admittedly that i only knew little about the sport. but i enjoy watching some good fights whenever's a chance.
my first time i watched PBF-JLC1, i thought that Castillo should have won.
i watched it again today when saw this thread (nice idea!!!) and scored it round-by-round. some close rounds and could go to either fighter defending on what style you prefer (aggresive or counterpuncher).
but i find it a little fascinating when all the 3 judges scored it in favor of PBF by a somewhat 2-3 rounds swing. guess they prefer PBF's counter-punching and running around.

Yeah! but keep in mind JLC was the champ.
IMO since JLC was the champ. I didn't see anything from PBF that indicated he was the challenger that he was there to win a fight, he fought like he was the champ there and JLC fought like the challenger the hungrier of the 2.
He fought aggressive and he pusnished PBF to the body and to the head.....
PBFs body punches were taps in the form of jabs to the stomach, while JLC threw hooks and uppers to the rib cage and to the stomach more variations of body attack.....

i'm with you on who looks like who fought hungrier of the two. certainly JLC looks like the challenger with the way he fought, specifically from rounds 4 to final bell. but he starts this fight slowly. he gave away the first 3 rounds before starting to become aggresive. the opening rounds results in points deficit for JLC and cost him the decision (IMO, the DRAW) but should not be a wide 2-3 rounds swing in favor of PBF as the three judges saw it.
those were definitely hard punches to PBF's body. this helps JLC in slowing him down and pinning him on corners. still, irritating Floyd makes JLC miss most of his shots. at one point of the match Castillo is so frustrated with Floyd's antics that he holds him down to prevent him from running away and on another one he squeaks two hooks on Floyd's side while Floyd's gaying away and his back turned from Castillo. ;D

I thought Castillo won this pretty convincingly but on my scorecard theres only 1 point in it . Floyd got off to an early lead , the power and strength of Castillo started to take its toll in the middle rounds then they were quite evenly matched . I scored round 8 10-9 Mayweather cuz although the Mexican had a point deducted , I think he won the round . In the 10th Floyd was deducted a point and also lost the round so I scored it 10-8 Castillo . I reckon the Mexican slowed down in the last round but clung onto it by a point .
The argumenst were put to sleep in the return anyway cuz Floyd proved beyond dispute that he was the better boxer. In the 1st he was just getting the measure of Castillo but in the return his jab was better , his defence was superb and Castillo had no chance . He was one paced and much worse second time round .

i think you made Castillo won convincingly. you should score round 8 Castillo 9-9 (1pt. deduction). so you have it Castillo 114-112, close but convincingly.

Good point but isnt it a 10 point must system ? 9-9 didnt look right . 10-9 seemed fair . I wouldnt agree with a 10-8 round after a point deduction unless the fouled boxer clearly won the round .

what is the rule in deduction for a 10 point must system scoring? can somebody explain this? i taught that a 9-9 score is allowed when a boxer that is leading a round was deducted a point by the ref. CutMeMicK also used this score for round 8 of this fight.

I'm not sure of the official rule when this happens . Logic dictates that if you deduct a point off the boxer who wins the round then you simply add the point to the other guy which ensures you arent deducting two points yet still maintaining the 10 point must system rule. It all gets quite complicated and I suppose nobody is guna ask the judges for jusification on their scoring anyway.
Also very rarely do they ever score a round 10-10 ( an even round ) Judges always wana find a winner . They are under the belief that someone always wins a round no matter how close . If there are lots of close rounds you can understand how two judges see a fight so differently . I try not to score 10-10 rounds cuz I know the judges wont be doing that

not being bias, but i really think castillo deserved that win more than pbf.
but it was a close fight, and there was a rematch and pbf clearly won the rematch.
and there should of been a third.

I think this is an important point. While this decision was controversial, Floyd did give him an immediate rematch. This is unlike some other fighters ::cough::De La Hoya ::cough:: who have won fights by questionable decisions and then not granted a rematch.
