And I don't see Mora being champ for long. He needs big fights but he'll probably lose in the smaller fights(he comes across as the kind of guy that needs huge motivation to perform)
Oh come on... And this isn't just directed at you, it's at everyone who picked Mora to win. How could anyone have possibly known that Forrest would look like absolute garbage and have aged 10 years since his last fight, beforehand??? Based on the form Forrest showed against Baldomir and Picchirilo, Forrest would have beaten Mora handily. To pretend otherwise is completely pretentious.

Well.and this is aimed at you, I've written quiet a few times that Vernon has not looked as good as he used to BEFORE this fight took place. Just because he looked decent at best v dinosaurs didn't mean he was going to beat Mora. I wasn't going to blindly follow everyone else proclaiming Vernon was the man etc etc just because of wins over Baldo and Piccirillo,2 punching bags.
And just because Mora looked bad in his last 2 fights didn't mean he was not going to win. I've been reading ALOT about Sergio's sparring with Margarito,Angulo,Kirkland etc and how he holds his own against them all so I thought he had a decent chance of winning.
Doug Fischer is the best writer and maybe the most knowledgeable boxing fan in the world. He called Mora winning,he stated the reasons why and he was right.

I don't care what happens now. What I cared about was that he won a belt.
This might be no bigger than Floyd beating Gatti or Baldomir for thier belts.
The critics said that Sergio would never win a belt. They were wrong.
They also said Sergio would never get another title shot and how soon we all forget eh? Not only did he get another title shot, he won that son of a biatch fair and square. I said it once and I will say it again, Sergio is pretty good but he lacks experience. He might not get much further but who knows.? He proved a lot of people wrong including me. I am glad I was wrong, I really am. I thought he had the goods but once he became stagnant, I began to loose hope.
Re: Mora won't beat Forrest...
This reminds me of Gomez beating Gatti. We didn't realize how completely shot Gatti was and we didn't give Gomez enough credit. Contender guys take a lot of crap around here. Same thing with Vera and Andy Lee. Feliciano sparked out the much hyped Delvin Rodriguez. Manfredo went the distance with Lacy in a fairly close fight (Giampa had the fight even in rounds, with Lacy only ahead because of the knockdown).
Just because the show made these guys more famous than other equally good or better up and comers does not make them crap or incapable of become excellent fighters. I'm not sure any of them will be ATGs, but they are better than a lot of people think.

Agreed.Ive been guilty of taking swipes at the concept & execution of the whole Contender show,as well as the over hyping up of some guys.Ive seen people act as if These fighters first entry into the sport was with the show when in fact all of them were in the professional ring many times prior. The show was an opportunity ,a shot in the arm to revitalize respected careers & reset.Gomez ,Mora,Bundrage, etc all beat there big fight former champions and will undoubtedly be in additional big stage bouts.Manfredo,Forbes were already established fighters and used show as a springboard also.I will say with some certainty though that None of them will be ultimately remembered as all time greats, but you sure can not begrudge them for trying there arse's off & going as far as possible.I expected Forrest to crush Mora based on the big picture of careers and skillset...I was wrong.Mora did what he had to do and grabbed his moment and title..Im not sold on him as the heir apparent in the big time, way to much posturing for me.

Ok, seen the fight now. And I mantain, tHere is no way anyone can tell me Forrest looked just as good last night as he did against Baldomir or Pichirrilo, or even close. Not saying those two were that good of opponents but that doesn't mean Forrest had to look very good against them. Last night he just looked ancient, showed very little to me, and even still won the early rounds and made it very, very close. Mora is not a top fighter, I thought Forrest still was. Obviously I was wrong about that. I mean if people picked Mora based on something they KNEW about Forrest, say they had the inside scoop that he was losing it, or didn't get up for the fight, then sure I'll give them credit for the pick. But it seemed the only people who picked MOra were sort of going out on a limb, or just picking the unpopular fighter for the hell of it *cough* Majesty *cough*.
Re: Mora won't beat Forrest...
I had Lacy thouroughly beating Manfredo. He outworked him throughout the fight.
Re: Mora won't beat Forrest...
I'm not here to say I'm Nostrodamus, but I'm going to tell you why
I thought it was an easy pick... besides the obvious, Vernon slower, older, Mora faster younger.
I saw Mora fight Manfredo and it was a pretty technical fight. More than most admitted. Manfredo had a great future. Young, fast, great head movement... it's just that he went UP in weight to 168. ... WHAT THE F#CK IS HE CRAZY! He's an idiot. Most the the guys from The Contender were idiots. They never fought at the weight that set them up to win at it's most optimum. Gomez just isn't good. He's a six rounder guy, entertaining for a short time, but in the long run he has no power and he'll run out of gas after six. Most of the guys that come from the contender were spoiled and, some were very talented, but the contender taught them how to do everything backwards.
So Mora was labeled a Contender guy, a Pretender. He's the only one who really took the sacrafice and went DOWN and weight AND had the skills to back it up, unlike Gomez. (And Gomez fought a future Hall of Famer in Cotto) (btw I only really follow the first season guys, but most guys on the contender volumes turn out duds)
And Vernon isn't good at all. He never was in his prime.... he lost to a Ricardo Mayora! haha And Ricardo was just another dud who got famous from Vernon. If Shane Mosely fought the way he does now, more aggressive and smart, he would have beaten Forrest, but back then Shane was very tentative and hesitant with Vernon. Vernon had a GREAT one-two. And in the past that's all he needed. But these days that one-two is just a little bit slower. And Mora had the head movement to upset that one-two that EVERYBODY knows Vernon throws.
That and it didn't hurt that Buddy McGirt trained Forrest. ;D

I had remembered that McGirt trains Forrest, I would have picked Mora :)
Re: Mora won't beat Forrest...
Great win by Mora.
I feel bad for Forrest. I like his sportsmanlike behaviour during the after-fight interview. He thanked god, congratulated Sergio, and didn't make one excuse. What a cool guy!

Woop! Sechew Powell - Sergio mora next for mee!... Sechew can be trusted to do the job! :)
Re: Mora won't beat Forrest...
I didn't see it and I ended up going with Forrest on points but I'm not sure anybody should be that shocked. I mean Mora's not a great fighter but Forrest is old, and has always been one dimensional. No one should get that much credit for beating Baldomir, no offense to Baldomir, he's a solid pro.

Agreed.
The odds should not have been the way they were. BUT it's one thing to say this ahead of time, and another to say it before of time. ;)
Re: Mora won't beat Forrest...
How the FOOK did this happen! I spose i just had a idea in my head that Forrest would always be a step up from Mora....but obviously age and other factors have caught up with him and was there for the taking for the younger and motivated Mora! However i really dont rate him and despise the little prick....heres to him taking on a real contender and getting KTFO!
