He didn't just beat a past his prime RJJ, he put his nose between RJJ's guard and dared RJJ to hit him....and this was less than four minutes after being put on the deck and hurt. Not one of us would have expected Calzaghe to do that, and Roy Jones certainly didn't expect it. It takes a very special fighter indeed to do that, whether the guy in front of him is past his prime or not. Roy Jones was, at that point, still very dangerous....but he wasn't anywhere near as dangerous thereafter.
Many people fancied RJJ to win. Those that didn't expected maybe a tricky fight with Calzaghe winning on workrate.
I didn't see ANYWHERE any predictions that Calzaghe would take a rather chiselled looking Roy Jones to school for 11 rounds.
Hindsight is a funny thing. Lacey is no longer the mini-Tyson he was before Calzaghe boxed his head off. RJJ is a shell (he didn't look like a shell before the fight). Byron Mitchell was past it....etc etc.
Perhaps, just perhaps, this is just what a supreme boxing talent does to an opponent: destroys their spirit.
I for one will give him credit for putting away what was in front of him in a fashion that left no doubt at all about his supremacy in all departments. After all, we wouldn't have bothered watching if that supremacy was so obvious before the fight.
i am a joe fan but of corse rjj was a shell b4 the fight cmon be real!
What is this guy Napolis talking about ? i said RJJ was a shot fighter before the fight, i gave people the thread which was a good few weeks before the fight.
This guy can't be serious in what comeback fight did RJJ look impressive ? the struggle against the mediocre Anthony Hanshaw ? or losing 4 rounds to a blown up Welterweight who hadn't fought since 2005 ?
Go watch a prime RJJ then watch the RJJ of the last few years, theres a massive difference.
exactly

My point is, Jones has a ton of fans and is a living legend, were as if Calzaghe was fighting an unknown or little known than I would buy into the whole picking fighter B just to stick it to Calzaghe fans
Hell I am a Calzaghe fan and was rooting for him to kick the crap out of Hopkins, but my loyalty is what it is toward my fighters especially when they are fighting each other, I been a fan of Roy's alot longer than Joe
fair enough your loyal, but my point is i think everyone knew joe wud out point him. Once again did you actually think rjj would win considering his last 3 fights and performances, and that ton of fans were rooting for him but like i said thats why they were rooting for him
there rjj fans, your making me repaeat myself
and when did i make it sound like picking fighter B?

Ice and Lefty you need to slow down a bit.
Napolis made a perfectly GOOD, reasonable post expressing his opinion. If you treat new members with such a lack of respect it's hardly surprising they can get off on the wrong foot.

Fenster please mate i didn't say anything insulting to him, i just debated back with him. Then i didn't understand his 2nd comment and said "what".
I have said nothing insulting at all its just a debate, which is part an parcel of the forum. I gave this new member Jack good rep and welcomed him to the forum, i treat all new members with respect, but if i disagree with there comment. I'll debate with them like i would do with any other member here, i don't see what the problem is.

What is this guy Napolis talking about ? This guy can't be serious
You come across as antagonistic (unfriendly) with those comments. As though his opinion is worthless. He never specifically quoted your post. He gave reasons why HE gives Calzaghe credit.
By all means disagree with people, that's your prerogative, but it's best to show a little more friendliness where new members are concerned, especially when they've said NOTHING offensive or unreasonable. That's all. ;)

Hit the nail on the head there...Lol Calzaghe fans do make me chuckle. I thought it was plain and obvious to see that RJ was there for the paycheck and nothing else.
Completely disinterested...add Calzaghe to the fighters he's had in huge trouble and refused to dispose of. If it really meant that much to him to show the world that 'Mr Unstoppable' was back then trust me he would have made more of an effort to dispatch of Calzaghe in the 1st. What a statement that would have been?? One that any hungry boxer wouldn't be able to resist.
Look at the fight with his last knockout...2002 vs Clinton Woods - He was RELENTLESS, I would have felt sorry for any man including Joe stepping in with that very man because he was too much for anybody. He would not leave Clinton alone.
The fans and experts that picked him to win expected Roy Jones to turn up in some shape or form...and this is the only thing I disagree with you on ICB...you give credit to Joe for beating 'this version' of Roy Jones?
Everybody knows that NO version of Roy Jones turned up for this fight - past or present.
Calzaghe gets my respect for Kessler - Credit where credit is due..he showed me something there. Still not a fan. You need better victories, better performances inside those victories and better opponents.

I like this guy. Good post, you put your points across well.
I'm not a Calzaghe fan but I agree with you about JC being put on his arse and always coming back for more. That is pretty impressive considering he looked pretty damn hurt in that 1st round.
Yes, Calzaghe also does destroy a fighters spirit..agreed there as well.
I give you credit (and reps) for making me see the few positives in Calzaghe again. Oh yeah and welcome...introduce yourself next time mate so people aren't immediately on the defensive.
Your post was good though ;) (even if your name does give away that you're Italian so perhaps a bit of biase but it's all good :D )

Thanks, and I am sorry if I have shown poor etiquette. I've been reading here a long time on and off, but not posted. I get the hang of it soon enough.
I'm not Italian. The username was a bit of an old joke from my distant past... a mis-spelling of Napoles. ANd I stand by my point that whether RJJ was washed up or not, no-one else would have toyed with him so brazenly.

Althugz i don't give Joe Calzaghe credit for beating RJJ, hence why we had this many pages ;)
Re: Giving Joe Calzaghe Credit For Beating This Version Of RJJ.....
Roy doesn't punch with his hands up in his guard as far as I know. So if Joe put his heads between Roy's guard then Roy wouldn't be able to hit him anyway.
I still haven't seen the fight yet.
