Re: Haye-Wlad - HBO Face Off Video
Ali was a man that knew how to talk and he didn't make such errors, that is very true. There is no reason for not being able to articulate properly unless you have something like Klinefelter's syndrome or Down's syndrome. David Haye is alright though, on the whole he is entertaining and he is clearly more articulate and smart than someone like Khan, who is quite frankly a serious meat head. He isn't Norman Finkelstein, but he does know how to put together fun catchy sound bites. Haye can probably read complete paragraphs too. Khan's Twitter on the other hand has shown us serious signs that he is in fact completely retarded.
Wlad would beat them all in a spelling test!

I'm from near enough the same area as Haye and 'shook' means someone is scared or nervous. In fact, I think if you used that anywhere in London, people would understand what you mean. I've got a lot of views about Haye as a person & know a hell of a lot more things to make me think less of him than damn near anyone on here, but he in no way speaks bad English. He speaks colloquial English quite articulately and for a guy from South-East London uses very little slang, but one word that really shouldn't be that hard to get the meaning of & it's the end of the world.
Has Hatton's much poorer use of the English language ever bothered you Miles?
It is poor English, if you had to check that in a GCSE test you would have to mark him down, he is clearly uneducated and somewhat simple. But having said that, I agree that many native speakers use poor spoken English, it is one reason why I think teachers need to be qualified rather than just from a specific country. You have too many chav inbreds, spouting grammatical weirdness and it is just insulting to the ears.
Anyway, the original point I was making was that Wlad speaks very good English and is arguable more articulate and succinct than Amir Khan. Haye can hold a conversation in his own way, but I think it is limited and cringeworthy at times. He makes silly errors with language that make me shudder. Hatton does too for that matter, but less obviously. There is that 'likkle' thing he says which I find quite weird, but on the whole he has a firm grasp of his tenses.
All in all it is no big deal and not a fight breaker. I am looking forward to it.
Miles, when you're calling somone out on their usage of English shouldn't you make sure you're not commiting errors yourself? I found two errors up there in your quote and I'm not even a native speaker. Hence you get a C- haha
Dammit, should have done some proofreading.
That's the thing with spoken language actually, you can't really erase and start again. Though constantly repeating "he's shook" is hardly the way to go about things. Say it once, correct yourself and move on.
Why am I still going on about this? Stop quoting me people, I want to move onto something else. I am not even that bothered about Haye's spoken English! Aaargh!
Re: Haye-Wlad - HBO Face Off Video
I would love to do one of these face offs with Bilbo actually. Master can play Max Kellerman. It would likely have a few gay moments.

If you are educated to speak a language, rather than immersed in a language and culture during your upbringing then of course you are going to speak it more purely.
Miles I'm assuming that being an English teacher, you already knew this... so I really don't see your point. I agree that the fact that English isn't Wlad's first language matters when assessing whether he is shook/shaken/shooken (:P) by Haye, as for Haye's grasp of English? It's completely irrelevant and just screams a bit of snobbery to be honest.
Great post.. I haven't read through the thread but I dont know what the fuss is about. Shook, Shaken or whatevers.. who cares, we all make errors..
Haye strikes me as a well spoken guy from what I've seen. He's quite articulate.
Re: Haye-Wlad - HBO Face Off Video
He's just a potty mouthed Londoner. Chris Hitchens is articulate, Oscar Wilde was articulate, Steven Fry is articulate. David Haye is just a big mouth, but he is clearly a better boxer than those other far more witty and slightly out of shape characters.
I actually imagine Mayorga to be something of a poet too. The insults flow fast and easy, with a wonderful sense of diction and phrasing. I would love to read a book of verse written by Ricardo Mayorga.

Ahh but he's the only one in the list that isn't gay :gay5:

Haha, good point. Though I am sure Lyle would beg to differ.
Re: Haye-Wlad - HBO Face Off Video
What am I talking about? Chris Hitchens isn't gay, at least not as far as I know. He was definitely married at one time, but I don't really know much about his personal life. Might be, but I doubt it.
Re: Haye-Wlad - HBO Face Off Video
Oh, scrap that, he seems to have written about his homosexual experiences. I never knew he was a big bender. You learn something new everyday! :o
Re: Haye-Wlad - HBO Face Off Video
Mayorga published in 2005 a half dozen or so iambic pentameter sonnets from his house in Tegucigalpa. The titles of 2 I remotely recall. "Startin' to Smoke, Pink Wig Puffin' " or something like that. Then there was a weird one like "I'll Rock His Socks Off, I'll Sock His Rocks Off" or something like that also.
As for Haye he is certainly a boor, a cretin, an obnoxious illiterate, worthy of a 2nd round shellacking. I preferred to listen to Jesse The Boogeyman Ferguson's postfight interviews.

Mayorga is very talented. I particularly liked the one entitled "I shagged Oscar's wife four times in one night". It was very touching and full of tenderness. The man just has a feel for language and knows how to put words together. "I love my Mum" is another very good one. It's all about how he has been made a man because of his mother. Lovely stuff indeed. "Penis mountain" is just downright weird though and he was quite likely off his head when he wrote that one. Still, all in all a top notch poet.

He IS talented. The downright weird ones are second on my list, but the touching ones that are often filled with tenderness I do prefer. About being "quite likely" off his head I have minimal doubts: he was well OUT of his head on "P M" in all likelihood. Only "Thirteen Disappointments of My Teenage Years" struck me as under-par.

To be fair to him he did write that after being stopped by Trinidad. So not only was he concussed and had red hair, but he was still finding his way as a writer. It wasn't as good as the later stuff, but there were still good moments. I particularly like the lines:
"a girl walked past, I whistled,
she turned around and looked at me,
I grabbed my crotch and gave her a wink,
but oh the rejection,
whisky and cigarettes did never hurt me like that."
Mayorga really captures the human condition with sentiments like these. Sure, it doesn't reach the maturity of his later work, but the sentiments are loud and clear. And don't forget, the man had red hair at the time.
