TBH though Ward needs to be taken off, Kovalev is the heir apparent.
Great work bud, top effort. Though his jump is fairly recent I cannot at all see Crawford below the number 1 spot at 140.
Yeah Ward has been a frustration but he won his Championship in the ring under the required weight limit (according to commission rules a Light-Heavy can fight someone weighting a minimum of 161, 14 pounds lighter), so both the Rodriguez and Smith fights were defenses.
According to my policy at the time Champions had 18 months to schedule a fight in their division (this has since been amended to 15 months). The Smith fight was scheduled with the time frame. Thus far Ward has done everything within my rules to hold onto his Championship.
Also I know the Light-heavy linage is pretty messy but you could make a case that it leads back to Ward.
Michalczewski-Gonzalez-Erdei-Grachev-Rodriguez-Ward. Add to that he defeated Dawson under 175 pounds.
I consider Ward the rightful Light-Heavyweight Champion.
The ratings are a reflection of what a fighter has done at that weight. So far Crawford has beaten Dulorme and Jean. His past credentials have been taken into account and are part of the reason he has moved into 5th at Super-Weltweight.
In saying that Provodnikov has not fought at 140 since April last year and his last two fights at 140 were losses, so a potential demotion is in the cards; meaning Crawford could advance another spot.
Matthysse was considered the #1 before the Postol fight and Herrera arguably defeated the previous Champion Garcia. Crawford will need to do a little more than beat fringe contenders to advance past those three.
I understand the logic to Ward but no way is he the best light heavyweight. Kov is and Stevenson is up there. Ward would not himself consider he is the best. I think this contract he has signed will lead to a fight with Kovalev so we will get a winner.
Many times throughout history to the present the Champion of a division has not necessarily been considered the best fighter in the division.
A few examples: Liston chasing Patterson, Hagler waiting for years, the color line draw by early Heavyweights.
Hopefully we get Ward vs Kovalev, so it will be the Champion vs the #1 contender.
Tim Bradley looked renewed under Atlas.

I love your rankings..... tremendous job.
But man, I cringe seeing Andre Ward's name up there. :cwm13:
B hop is unofficially retired now?
Thank you very much. The support from you guys has been awesome.
The Ward thing has been the biggest talking point since I started publishing my ratings. For me he defeated the Champion under the weight limit. If Dawson had have won I would have awarded him both Championships as well because the fight took place within the weight limits of both divisions.
Not as far as I'm aware but he has been inactive for over a year and hasn't scheduled a bout at Light-heavy in that time.
I read he just relinquished his SMW belt (about time!), and will now concentrate on 175. Personally, I hope he just goes away. He's lost any good faith with me, being so crassly inactive over the last few years. I don't see how he's even relevant in boxing at this point. His wanting to fight someone like Rohan Murdock (??) on the Cotto-Canelo card (and betting rebuffed by the NSAC) doesn't help his case, either.
Edwin Rodriguez won a knockdown filled shootout.

Number one contender Sergey Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KOs) punished previous number five Jean Pascal (30-4-1, 17 KOs) for seven rounds before Pascal’s Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach called an end to the beat-down. Pascal tumbles to eighth. Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs), Eleider Alvarez (19-0, 10 KOs) and Vyacheslav Shabranskyy (15-0, 12 KOs) all move up a spot each to fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

MINIMUMWEIGHT:
Number three Knockout CP Freshmart (12-0, 6 KOs) won a decisive twelve round unanimous decision in a rematch against previous number six Carlos Buitrago (28-2-1, 16 KOs). Although the initial clash was very close; this bout left little doubt as to who had won. Buitrago slips a spot to seventh. Kosei Tanaka (6-0, 3 KOs) moves up from seventh to six.
Nice work if it's yours or whoevers, but why is Andre Ward listed as light heavyweight champion? He has never fought anyone in that division. I guess if you have Alvarez there as a middleweight you've got to be consistent:-\ There HAS to be a certain point where these alphabet gangs are going to strip these guys and just declare a vacant title bout between the best guys who actually fight there.
Hi thanks for the interest, I get asked this question regularly.
Under my Ratings Policy any time a Champion weighs in under his Championship weight and fights in a twelve round bout then the Championship will be on the line.
Here are a few examples of dual-championship fights from history:
World Lightweight and World Junior Welterweight Titles- World Lightweight Champion Tony Canzoneri/World Junior Welterweight Champion Jackie "Kid" Berg- Limit- 135; Canzoneri weighed in at 132; Berg at 134 1/4; Winner- Canzoneri KO-3
World Lightweight and World Junior welterweight Titles- Champion Tony Canzoneri/Challenger Jackie "Kid" Berg- Limit- 135; (weights not available); Winner- Canzoneri UD 15
World Lightweight and World Junior Welterweight Titles- Champion Tony Canzoneri/Challenger Kid Chocolate- Limit- *135; (weights not available); Winner- Canzoneri SD 15 (*- Note: Had Canzoneri made the 130-pound limit, which he didn't, he would have been awarded Kid Chocolate's World Junior Lightweight title. That would have made Canzoneri, a former World Featherweight champion, boxing's first four-divisional champion.)
World Lightweight and World Junior Welterweight Titles- Champion Tony Canzoneri/Challenger Barney Ross- Limit- 135; Canzoneri weighed in at 133 1/2; Ross at 134 3/4; Winner- Ross MD 10
World Lightweight and World Junior Welterweight Titles- Champion Barney Ross/Challenger Tony Canzoneri- Limit- 135; Ross weighed in at 135; Canzoneri at 133 1/2; Winner- Ross SD 15
World Lightweight and World Welterweight Titles- Champion Henry Armstrong/Challenger Lew Feldman- Limit- 135; Armstrong weighed in at 135; Feldman at 134; Winner- Armstrong KO-1
An interesting fact, Armstrong should have lost the lightweight and welterweight championships to Lou Ambers in August 1939, both weighed in under 135. The officiating was horrible but we have to respect the official decision even if we don't agree with it.
You can add in Leonard/ LaLonde, the Mayweather/ Maidana fights and now Mayweather/ Pacquiao.
My policy is pretty clear; if a champion fights under his championship weight in a twelve round bout then the title is on the line. When you start picking and choosing and muddying the waters it becomes no better than the alphabet boys. Or you get situations like Judah or Peterson holding belts they should have lost.
He won his Championship in the ring under the required weight limit (according to the commission rules a contest with fighters weighing between 161 lbs – 175 lbs has a maximum weight difference allowance of 12 pounds), both Dawson and Ward weighted in at 168. The Rodriguez and Smith fights also qualified as defences.
It's not very common these days for a number of reasons. For example you have to have two champions from different divisions willing to face each other, with the higher weight holder willing to weigh under the lighter division limit. Normally a fighter wants every advantage possible so dual weight championship fights are rare.
These examples were to show that even though Dawson was not at his championship weight his title was on the line.
Also the Light-heavy linage is pretty messy but you could make a case that it leads back to Ward.
Michalczewski-Gonzalez-Erdei-Grachev-Rodriguez-Ward.
I consider Ward the rightful Light-Heavyweight Champion.
Still think it is wholly wrong to have Ward as light heavyweight champion. I do not believe even he would claim the title.
#9 Bantamweight Pungluang Sor Singyu was victorious by way of a technical decision.

BANTAMWEIGHT:
Number nine Pungluang Sor Singyu (52-3, 35 KOs) won a seven round technical decision over unrated Jetro Pabustan (26-3-6, 7 KOs). The ref stopped the fight due to a cut above Pabustan’s left eye that was caused by an accidental head clash. No changes.
FLYWEIGHT:
Number seven Edgar Sosa (52-9, 30 KOs) won a sixth round unanimous decision over unrated journeyman Orlando Garcia (17-23, 14 KOs) in an over-the-weight contest. No changes.
I did say it's messy and you could make a case. Erdei never lost (until Grachev) and did return to 175.
My Light-Heavyweight lineage begins from Dawson vs Pascal
