True heavyweights as p4p number 1 fighters of their time?
Ussually the number 1 p4p spot is dominated by middle weights or below.
It is rarer to see cruisers or heavyweights in at the p4p number 1 spot.
But who were the natural heavyweight sure p4p number 1's in their day?
1 name screams to mind, ali...but he is probably p4p number 1 ever (best fighter ever).
What about joe louis?
Lennox lewis?
Evander holyfield?
Mike tyson?
Rocky marciano?
Its very hard for the heavyweights of say 1980-2000 because whilst you had the likes of tyson, holmes, lewis, holyfield, you also had great fighters in the divisions below, hearns, duran, leonard, roy jones, bernard hopkins etc etc.
What are your opinions?
Re: True heavyweights as p4p number 1 fighters of their time?
Good question. But as long as Duran, Robinson, Moore, Armstrong, etc etc are still in the history books.. i'd NEVER even argue Ali was p4p the GOAT.
When Roy went to Heavy he was p4p imo.
Re: True heavyweights as p4p number 1 fighters of their time?
SRR is the best p4p Ali even said that and so did Joe Louis. but my list is something like this.
1.Ali
2.Foreman
3.Holyfield
4.Holmes
5.Louis
6.Marciano
7.Lewis
8.Fraizer
9.Norton
10.Tyson
thats how i have it i could be wrong be everybody has there opinion

Interesting? You dont think ali was p4p greatest?
You could be right though, robinson has to be in the top bunch.
Ok, im not knocking roy jones at all, because he was the p4p number 1 at his peak, BUT...
If hes the p4p number 1 at heavyweight, he is fighting at heavyweight, therefore should be able to beat all the other heavyweights as well?
It is of my opinion that if roy jones had fought lenox lewis at heavyweight instead of ruiz then he wouldve been brutally ko'd.
But they would both be in the same division.
Surely if fighters are in the same weight category one would expect the p4p number 1 to win against any other fighter in that division? But most would agree surely that lenox wouldve hurt roy very badly?
For this reason, i cant put him as p4p number 1 when he was at heavyweight, because he didnt make the greatest of heavyweights. I mean, take tyson or holyfield and they wouldve hurt him as well in my opinion.
When he was middle, super middle and light heavy, p4p number 1, but when he made the step up to heavyweight, he wouldve been beaten by lewis, therefore it wouldve been lewis surely who wouldve taken that title if he beat roy jones, had they have fought?
Thing is though, no one can really blame roy for not wanting to fight lennox lol, that wouldve been stupid.

I dont dount that ali said that mate, infact i can quite easily put robinson at the top as well. It would be a t0ss up between him or ali for no.1 spot.
A peak robinson was just something else though.
Do you have the quote where ali says that? Just interested in what he actually said thats all.

Re: True heavyweights as p4p number 1 fighters of their time?
I thought you meant what heavyweight in their day was number 1 p4p during the time they were fighting. If that was the question, then Roy Jones was Easily the best fighter in the sport p4p when he was a heavyweight.
Now the question seems to be who imo is the best heavyweight.. I'm not sure what you're saying.
But no heavyweight of any era will ever be Before Robinson or Roberto Duran in my p4p list for All time.
No, i don't think Ali was the greatest fighter of all time pound for pound, a lot of people don't. Tremendous heavyweight though.
Alli is definitely in my top 10 Pound for Pound but he does not come before Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Archie Moore, Willie Pepp, or Rorberto Duran.

I believe he's asking what heavyweights were considered #1 pfp at some point during their careers, and specifically, natural heavyweights, not someone like Roy who just moved up to heavy for 1 fight.
Given that, I would say:
Ali in the mid 60s before his exile
Tyson from the time he beat Spinks until he lost to Douglas
That's it.
Re: True heavyweights as p4p number 1 fighters of their time?
I'll never understand the hype Muhammad Ali, gets sure he fought the best opposition. But he was a loud mouthed racist, who constantly disrespected his opponents. And he should have atleast 10 losses on his record, the GOAT above Henry Armstrong, Willie Pep, Sugar Ray Robinson ? give me a break.

I am gonna get stick for this but you cannot just say ali because you are supposed to we need to judge him on his ability not on how much we dote on him he had flews in the ring if you watch from a neutrel prespective he was constantly vururable to the left hand and was caught all thew his career with it.Granted he was the fastest ever and had the best reflexes ever but he had faults.
Ali could be beaten he cheated against cooper and lost to fraizer i would have to say joe louis because he was the only heavyweight i can say i think was truly unbeatable in his prime and had no flaws in the ring what so ever this is based on ability in the ring not on popularity
Louis
johnson
ali
dempsey
marciano
PS take it easy on me guys over the ali thing i no i am gonna get it just be gentle i bruise easy LOL;D

I could guess the loses you are refering to but all fighters have close fights that end controversy.
I cant think of any top fighter that has not had what is known as a home town/house fighter/popular champ decision.
Just a point I want to make if SSR was so great why did he he duck Charles Buerly?

No argument on any Decision Jones won. Considering everyone else SSR fought and the number of rematches and people he fought in general - I think he can get a pass for ducking.
