What if your son decided to box?
I saw Mar's picture (his sig) with his children wearing boxing gloves and playing around and we were talking about it a few minutes ago. I started wondering, how would you feel if your son told you he wanted to start boxing? How would you feel to see him punch and get punched in the ring? Back flat on the mat, bruised face, etc. Would you encourage or discourage?
Re: What if your son decided to box?
I don't know if I'd encourage it but I would support it. My Dad played college football but never pushed the sport. He prodded me to do sports I could play into adulthood and that had less potential for injury. That being said, he fully supported me when I did play football. So if my boys wanted to try boxing I'd support their decision with certain conditions of course.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
My son already wants to box and he's 7, its finding the time thats the problem. He's an animal at Judo so the competitive spirit is strong with him. He also gets taught loads of other stuff like chokes, chinjabs and palms by yours truly. He plays football too.
He's a placid lad until he gets on the mat or is fighting with me in the front room.
He's going to be one not to mess with when he's older. Boxing would be good for him but then there is the problem of doing too much at a young ageand i would like him to pursue the judo as he is very very talented at it.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
I began when I was 12. Boxing changed me. It made me a different person.
It not only kept me busy and away from bad elements that were already showing up at my doorstep, it taught me about some important things in life. It taught me about hard work and seeing the rewards of it. It taught me about dedication. But most importantly, along with the many things it can offer a youth, it taught me respect. For myself, and for my fellow man. Respect starts with self, and then radiates outward.
Through the tools boxing offers, and a willingness to learn, the grand and greatest reward for me has no doubt been the confidence and respect I have gained. It has simply made me a better person.
Oh, and knowing you can kick most anyone's ass don't hurt either. But the funny thing about that is, once you know it, it is the last thing on your mind. It's a very calming feeling.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
I'd difintely encourage and support him. But I would let him decide it is or not for him without me interfering.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
If I had a son and he was just a tiny kid, I'd just treat it like a game and let him have fun with it and not force anything onto him. I'd put up my hands and have him hit me on my palms, show him how to stand, brush aside his swings and encourage him to hit straight. When he does it right he can get a few punches in on me. :) However I wouldn't just put gloves on a couple of little kids and tell them to box. That's just irresponsible to just put them in for everyone else's amusement. Even if the kids are into it, it won't teach them right.
If my boy was older and got interested in boxing, I'd help him in any way that I could, talk boxing with him, watch fights with him, and send him to a good trainer that could set him on the right track if his heart is in it.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
I'd love it if the little bastard started to box. I'd be happy with him getting in the ring once and getting his arse kicked or even a bloody nose. Kids have this unbelievable sense of self entitlement, they think they should just get everything they want without having to work for it. I'd kick him up the arse myself if I thought I could get away with it but he'd probably file charges or his mum and dad would anyway.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
I'm a long way from having kids (or so I hope, that last chick I beat is starting to get a bit big :-\) but I would treat it as a kind of playful little thing whilst they're a child, never push it, and once they were a teenager, I would let them do it. Then after they'd been at it for a decent while (like a year proper I'd say), I'd go see em fight/spar a couple of times & make an assessment of how far they could go. Unless I realized they were gonna be somethin really special, I would do my best to make sure they kept it as an amateur hobby

I don't have any kids but friends of mine do and I play fight with them all the time. I care about them so I suppose I qualify, if they were good at it and showed an interest I would definitely encourage them. Only if they were really non-athletic would I suggest it's not for them.
I am great friends with a couple who have a 12 year old boy and he is piss poor at everything that involves speed or timing, can't even kick a football straight (unless it's on his XBOX 360) he wanted to try it and I said he would have a tough time.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
If my son wanted to box, 1st thing I'd do is ask for a DNA test to be done. Then, if the results were positive he was spawned from my super sperm, I'd tell him to go ahead and box, bye, get outta' my life.:)
Re: What if your son decided to box?
I would be cool with it. I wish I was aware of boxing when I was 10 years old. I think I was probably busy playing with Barbie and Ken or something of that ilk. Or else playing football.
Re: What if your son decided to box?
No doubt.Anything that could encourage him, keep him grounded & active in body and mind.I'd rather have him training-learning-experiencing with me in his ear rather than knocking around in the streets.Have always looked at Boxing as a metaphor for lifes trials and tribulations, one day your on top of the world and the next not so much, and vice-versa.Now....clearly if the little man progresses but just did not have it...was in there just to play a tough guy and "kick someones ass" but was getting knocked around....loosing interest, and school-career were suffering, thats the point at which pops has to step in and be a father.
Don't become one of these loon parents that tries to live vicariously through the child.....the mom entering the 4 year old daughter in beauty pageants, wearing more make-up than a Geisha and hair straight out of the 80's....or these over bearing Dads loosing his mind and yelling, screaming and berating his kid from the sidelines of a little league game for dropping the ball :dunce:.Let them have fun most importantly.
