Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
The more I watch that fight, I think Floyd would have been way better served to simply keep that fight in the middle of the ring, I still feel there was a want on his part to let Oscar throw punches in bunches with him on the ropes so he could tire Oscar out, but at not point could Oscar truly compete with Floyd in the middle of the ring, and I think he could have dominated that fight similarly to how he did from the 9th on if he would have been more aggressive because Oscar was more focused on blocking shots than he was countering, and Floyd could have eventually created openings, but he never forced Oscar onto his heels enough which he did against MOsley, and neither Oscar or MOsley could fight their best unless they could come forward on the balls of their feet.
He also conceded real estate far easily to Hatton without using enough lateral movement. I think he just planned to tire them out, which wasn't as effective as simply fighting them would have been for him.
Re: Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
He spent to much time on the ropes for my liking in that fight to.I would of liked to see him been abit more agressive in fight.I think when people think of Mayweather they think great defensive fighter. When he chooses to be agressive he is equally as good in my oppinion look what he did to Corrales,Gatti,Hatton late on and Mosley
Re: Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
Probably his most timid and nervous performance of his career
De la Hoya got going right from the word go, mayweather just seemed intent on keeping it all back for the stretch home.
I had it 114-114
Re: Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
ODLH should have won that fight if he wasn't gun shy... As timid as Floyd's performance was, I think DLH was equally timid by what he has been capable of...
Honestly as someone who has the hand in the pie of every one of Floyd's fights after that one, for Floyd to keep is ZERO means a LOT more money in ODLH's pocket...
Just saying, DLH had as many incentives to not win that fight as he had to win it.... I think DLH could have, and was capable of doing more in that fight to win it....
Like his jab for one.. It was winning him the fight... Or at the very least, it was winning him rounds... Which would have, won him the fight... So what does he do as soon as he realises that he's is looking like getting ahead in points,,,, he stops using it.. Almost altogether... Anything that was working for the first 6 rounds, he stopped using after that.... It could be said perhaps Floyd was doing something a little different to make DLH's jab less effective, but DLH to me, was going easy on Floyd,,, at least when it was coming down to the business end of winning later rounds and taking the fight for himself...

The reason ODLH stopped using the jab, is because he was getting countered over the top of it. He had been stunned a few times in the fight, and also because his known stamina problems come into play.
I think its silly to say he didn't try his hardest, to win the fight. Because your taking the credit away from Floyd Mayweather Jr, and your also suggesting foul play somewhat.
The fight wasn't that close anyway, the closest i've had it is 7-4-1 for Floyd Mayweather Jr. I've also had it 8-4 for Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Also lastly when is the last time ODLH got a second wind in a fight ? probably not since the Fernando Vargas fight.
Re: Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
Remember it was the only time Floyd ventured at this weight and it was a couple of years ago, only now do i feel he is a full blown welterweight and comfortable at the welterweight. Floyd could have got hurt early if he stood in the middle of the ring.
Re: Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
Judging the fight round by round and not the fight as a whole, it wasn't really close imo either. There are things guys don't do after every floyd fight, i think it has little to do with what they do or don't do as much as it is floyd not letting them. Good as the guy is i still think people get in the ring with mayweather thinking he isn't as fast as they've heard, hit as hard as those say he does, isn't as smart and hard to hit as they say etc.....he frustrates guys much as anything else. Mayweather is content on just winning decisions, just the way he is. If you don't make him fight he won't. And that makes the fights look closer maybe who knows. I think out boxing him is the only way to beat him. There isn't this one thing guys aren't doing, it's outboxing him as a whole that is the problem. I don't see anyone out there right now that can do that. Just being stronger, faster, having a jab or any of these one or two things just won't cut it.

I think its a very overrated close fight, ODLH only won rounds when Floyd Mayweather Jr, took rounds off and he stayed on the ropes too much.
And ODLH appeared to outland Floyd Mayweather Jr. When he threw eye catching flurries, but really most of those punches missed or they wern't effective punches.
And Floyd Mayweather Jr was landing very accurate and solid punches, and as i said he even stunned ODLH. a few times which is why ODLH became more hesistant, something Floyd Mayweather Jr doesn't get enough credit for.
But in reality ODLH didn't do any real better, than Victoriano Sosa did against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I had it very similar to the night he fought trinidad just with less action
well up in the fight through 7rounds and then just ran out of steam for the home stretch

The Hammer Scoring System - A guaranteed method for making sure you scored a fight completely out of kilter ;D;D;D
Re: Floyd had the wrong approach to the De La Hoya fight.
Floyd was understandly cautious about standing his ground early because it was new territory at 154. With hindsight yes he should have stood his ground more and would have won by bigger margins if he did but tactically before the fight it would have seemed like a bad idea especially when he has the edge in quicker feet. Towards the end of teh fight he was setting his feet and letting go.
I'd like to see him fight Pac the same way he met Shane but the ferocity and speed of Pacs attack may cause Floyd to re position abit more than he'd like to. Either way Floyd wins. If Paul wins tonight thats a good fight to look forward to.

114-114?!! Wtf, Mayweather landed almost twice as many punches, and won every round including the 8th on.
That means you gave Mayweather only one round from the 1st to the seventh? What about the first round, or the fourth and fifth?

After watching Paul Williams against Martinez and Quintana, he makes way too many mistakes to compete with Floyd.

No one seems to try their hardest against Floyd, they stop doing what brought them success for 30 seconds or 2 rounds and then completely intentionally stop trying.. because winning 2 rounds against Floyd is so great if u dont do it anymore its cause you stopped trying :)
