Jan Zaveck vs. Andre Berto fight thread - on HBO tonight

Jan Zaveck won the IBF welterweight title from Isaac Hlatshwayo by 3d round KO, in Dec. of '09 and defended it 3 times going into the fight with Berto, this might be a decent tussle Saturday night. :action:

At Biloxi, Miss. (HBO): Jan Zaveck vs. Andre Berto, 12 rounds, for Zaveck's IBF welterweight title; Gary Russell Jr. vs. Leonilo Miranda, 10 rounds, featherweights; Thomas Oosthuizen vs. Aaron Pryor Jr., 12 rounds, super middleweights.

HBO will likely show, Gary Russell Jr. vs. Leonilo Miranda, 10 rounds, featherweights on the undercard.

The action starts @ 10:30 PM EST tonight, let's get ready to rumble!!

Berto will be coming off of his first loss to Ortiz and looking to get another strap, so it should be a good fight. I agree that Zaveck looks to be a tough fight for Berto, definitely not a gimme.

I'm not sure how much to read into Zavecks KO of Hlatswayo, the guy was probably shot, he was stopped in 3 2 fights later by Ben Rabah. But Berto's always had a questionable chin so you never know...

I've just never cared much for Berto, so i'll be pulling for Zaveck, I hope he doesn't get robbed here in the U.S.

They are importing Zaveck strictly for his trinket and if he wins (by ko) don't expect to see him again on HBO. Berto doesn't belong in a follow up main event let alone a trinket affair next fight out I believe. Personally I hope Jan balls him up like dirty laundry and pitches him into the pile of force fed hype jobs.

yeah but the fight with Ortiz was entertaining, if Berto can put on that sort of showing then I'd be alright with him headlining

Oh def entertaining yeh. But if he puts on a couple more showings like that one vs Ortiz he'll be on FNF co features and working a part time job just to pay the bills very shortly.

I've rarely seen a fighter who has been pushed so far so quick but is still so green in many ways. He needs to hone and ground his fundamentals or he'll only be treading water till the end.

I agree, there are those who would argue that Ortiz was his 1st real test & even then Berto entered as the favourite. his progress seemed to stall & he never really improved. In saying that though remember how far limited warriors like Ward & Gatti continued! Lets hope Berto can give us half as many thrills. He has already given us the Collazo & Ortiz fights

this is the first proper orthodox fighter berto will have fought since 2009...
i think this could be an upset...but it'll probably be a gift win for berto with zaveck getting robbed USA styles.

Berto is still one of HBO's boys, so they'll be all over his nuts Saturday night, and hoping he wins another title. I agree that the likely outcome of this fight is Zaveck getting fucked on the scorecards, hopefully Zaveck will take the judges out of the equation.

I believe this is an important fight for Berto because if he wins closely/controversely or if the fight isn't too fun to watch, HBO will go cold on him. After the loss against Ortiz, they picked Zaveck for a reason, but he's not a bad opponent for Berto coming off a loss. Zaveck is a solid fighter. I expect Berto to be too dynamic for him and to overwhelm him by knockout around the middle of the fight.

I completely agree!!!

I've never liked Berto, and HBO kisses his overpaid ass, because he's one of Al Haymon's boys.

If Zaveck doesn't KO him, he's screwed if it's a close fight.

Berto has had haymon getting him big paydays for fighting tune ups prior to his fight with Ortiz. I'd hope if he got KO'd by Zaveck and his HBO career ended, that he would have already stashed away enough money to live off of for quite a while.
