BOXING trying the patience of its fans
With all due respect to the "Don't call this a black eye for boxing" thread, I'm gonna call it just that. First the Mayweather-Ortiz fiasco, and now this. It's literaly a three-ring circus. Another shitty, controversial ending.... another major disappointment for boxing fans. Of course, we all gather round and discuss it, like the loyal fans we are. But deep down, I can't think of anybody that would be satisfied with the way these major fights have been going lately.
Too many clowns in boxing (Mayweather).... too many old fogies that just need to hang them up (Hopkins and a host of other fighters). What's happening to good old fashioned boxing? Problem is... us fans are a resilient bunch. We get used to these shitty fights, complain a little bit... and keep coming back for more. We just can't help ourselves.
But how long is the fanbase of boxing going to continue to shell out good money for PPV fights, only to get thoroughly disgusted by a crappy fight, and shitty endings?
I've been one to defend boxing versus MMA, 'cause I've been a boxing fan for a lot of years, and I consider myself a loyal fan. But things are going from bad to worse in a hurry. I'm not asking for the glory years of the 80's and 90's. But I'd settle for just good plain entertainment. And what I'm getting is CRAP.
We boxing fans sometimes talk with our hearts and not our minds. We WANT to believe that these fights are good. That just watching Hopkins still fighting at age 46 is entertainment onto itself. But are we really that desperate?
I didn't watch the fight live, but saw the last round on U-tube, and heard when one of the commentators called it a shitty fight. (Maybe not in those terms). And I'm glad I didn't watch it live. And I will never watch Hopkins fight again.
Boxing takes to take a long, hard look at itself, before fans start dropping off like flies, and the sport suffers irreparable damage.
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
I agree with you that the hardcore boxing fans like us will bitch about this and then move on.
BUT, the casual boxing fans and general public will def be put off by both the Mayweather and Hopkins bouts.
Really makes boxing look like a joke and circus, not a real sport to the general public.
But, fuck em.
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
meh we still got those great fights theyre just saddly not the main event, linares demarco should have been the main event and it would have been a great night for boxing!
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans

You are exactly right. Anyone that doesn't see the problem of Mayweather-Ortiz and Hopkins-Dawson, from the match ups to the ppv to the antics, is an apologist for the nonsense that is going on. To try to claim that those that paid to watch those fights got their money's worth with a tackle and a bizarre headbutt/undefended ko is a fool's errand.

It's true. I am too often an apologist. It says something that Hopkins and Mayweather are two of the biggest names in boxing and yet their fights are the dissappointing ones. Maybe we need new big names?

I can't see how Hopkins is getting the blame.
We would of got a full fight had Dawson not fouled Hopkins.

Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
I also can't blame Mayweather after getting Butted about 5 times and the last one being the most deliberate I have ever seen in a major fight.
Then he legally pastes a guy who HE OWES NOTHING TOO AFTER A MAJOR FOLLOW.
My problem with the posters who use these platforms to grandstand against fighters they don't like and exonerate the other fighter involved who caused the problems.
Also in the moment that Floyd has gotten butted and kissed + manhugged 3 X is worried about the money you spent and neither would you. If you got cut off driving in your car before you yell, swear and flip off the other guy did you stop to see if there where any old ladies looking or kids? No you reacted.. So stop the crying
Also same with Hopkins, he gets scooped by chad and deposited on his shoulder BY CHAD but instead of Chad getting blamed everyone is shoveling dirt on the guy who got his shoulder dislocated.. Do you think in that moment he really cares about you while his shoulder is hanging there?
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
I see you are a fan of Bernard fair play to you, i dont like him as a fighter and as a person just not my kind of fighter, some man's shit is some man's gold.;D:sheep:
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
Boxing has already suffered irreparable damage, we have this recent fiasco following on closely from the Ortiz brain fade. (I'm not blaming Mayweather for that one) The Judah V Mayweather punch up in the ring was disgraceful a few years back and we have the soap opera that is the PBF V Pacman scenario (what a joke that is).
The best fights appear to be the undercards or 126lb and under. Those of us who are older remember the glory days of the 70's, 80's and 90's, Monzon and Hagler would destroy Hopkins! The last 5-6 years have been littered with dubious dealings, unsatisfactory results, boxers fighting on way to long (RJJ & SSM) and fights that resemble grappling matches more than a boxing match. Only the idiots that allowed 34 cars to race in Las Vegas last weekend have less brains than you will find in Boxing in 2011.
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
As long as fans bitch with thier mouths and pay with thier wallets nothing will change.

Hey I actually defended Mayweather and blasted Ortiz after that fiasco of a fight. Many times, I might add. But.... does blaming one guy or the other make the fight any better? Bottom line is... the fans didn't get their money's worth. And sadly, both Mayweather AND Hopkins have had their share of disappointing (from the fans' point of view) fights.
Do they care what the public thinks? Obviously not. That's just it, though. Maybe they should. Being a fan of a fighter is one thing. Being blind to what they do wrong is quite another.
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
Tito,
I wasn't singling you out. Threads like this turn into a pile on sometimes and sensible thoughts get turned into a witch hunt in disliked fighters.
The real issue is boxers are independent contractors. There is no one to police these things like say a UFC where they fight for an organization
